PLANNING

RPS has over 40 years experience of successfully supporting our clients through the planning process. We provide an unparalleled consultancy service advising on the preparation, submission and negotiation of planning consents across all business sectors and ranging in size from residential to nationally significant infrastructure projects.

1. RPS was appointed as planning consultants to prepare and submit a planning application for the Shard and advised throughout the planning process which culminated in a Public Inquiry followed by planning permission.

2. RPS provided planning, environmental and masterplanning services to Taylor Wimpey and David Wilson Homes for the Great Western Park development at Didcot, Oxfordshire, which has seen the town expand by 3,300 homes.

3. Supporting arguably the most contentious planning application of its time, RPS provided strategic planning advice to EDF at Hinkley Point C and undertook other applications for associated development. We are currently and have been involved in planning related matters for other new nuclear facilities at Sizewell, Oldbury and Moorside.

RPS offers a vast breadth of services. In addition to our planning consent and environmental services, we offer coordinated design through our large teams of architects, engineers and building services professionals together with full project management and cost consultancy services. We are at the leading edge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology which is at the centre of all of our design services.

1. Playing a pivotal role in this 75 hectare development, we provided civil/structural and fire engineering services for the Titanic Signature Project, gateway offices and residential apartments. In addition, RPS was appointed as landscape architects and provided contaminated land assessment and remediation advice plus transport and highway services.

2. RPS designed this comprehensive refurbishment which includes a new 11 Screen Cinema at first floor with 6 restaurant units and will be followed by a number of other significant schemes to transform and modernise the existing Shopping Park.

3. RPS provided building services engineering design to create a media /broadcasting school for the University of Salford situated in the heart of the new BBC ‘Media City’. The project won the BCO award for Innovation for the fit out of standard BCO office space into bespoke creative media accommodation.

With extensive experience and an enviable reputation within the water industry, RPS is the leading provider of clean and waste water support services. We work with all UK water companies, The Environment Agency and other European regulatory bodies to deliver cost effective results through the strategic planning, maintenance and management of water services and undertake flood risk studies over large scale catchment areas and individual development plots.

1. RPS has been implementing EU Floods Directive over a significant area of Ireland, surveying and modelling over 2,400km of watercourse; mapping, undertaking GIS based risk assessments, providing options and developing Flood Risk Masterplans for 14 hydrometric areas covering 120 urban areas (including Dublin). The 6 year study assessed flooding from fluvial, coastal and pluvial sources.

2. RPS has a long-term framework agreement with Scottish Water to provide the full range of technical consultancy services for both water and wastewater infrastructure. Our business plan for Scottish Water reflects the wide range of services we provide.

3. Midgardsormen is one of the largest sewerage projects in Oslo, Norway. RPS was involved in all aspects of its project management. The result is a state-of-the art sewerage system with more than 3km of tunnels beneath Oslo, providing good water quality and significant environmental benefits for the city.

RPS advises clients across the public and private sector in all stages of a project’s lifecycle from strategic environmental assessment of major policies and plans, through to the assessment of individual developments, management of the operational phase and remediation of environmental liabilities.

1. The Corrib Onshore Gas Pipeline project for Shell E&P Ireland involved a large multi-disciplinary team of RPS engineers, scientists, planners and communications specialists across Ireland and the UK. RPS managed the project from route selection, EIS and statutory applications through to detailed design of civil, structural, geotechnical and drainage elements.

2. Over the past 10 years RPS has provided environmental due diligence services to Euro Garages to enable the company to secure funding for their acquisition strategy, growing from one petrol filling station to 350 sites across the UK with a turnover of over £800m.

3. In one of the most environmentally challenging road projects in recent years, RPS was appointed to lead the environmental design and assessment. The highway scheme passes through the Brecon Beacons National Park, impacts on a World heritage site, 3 Special Areas of Conservation, several SSSI’s and involves dealing with protected species along route.

1. RPS was the lead designer for this major investment in fuel handling and storage facilities for over half a million tonnes of biomass at Drax to enable conversion from coal firing. The project was a finalist in the British Construction Industry Awards.

2. Consent was achieved for the world’s largest offshore wind farm generating 1.2GW, with RPS leading and providing coordinated offshore and onshore EIA and planning services. Our services included production of the Environmental Statement, technical reporting, landfall and alternative assessments together with stakeholder consultation.

3. With RPS’ strong reputation in the oil and gas sector, combined with key environmental, design and management skills, we have developed a multi-disciplinary offering to the North Sea Decommissioning industry. Offshore services include process and operational health & safety and asbestos services with onshore support including port infrastructure design and waste management consultancy services.

TRANSPORT

RPS’ unique combination of infrastructure engineering, together with our consenting and environmental record on significant infrastructure projects, provides a highly value added addition to any transport infrastructure project. We have worked on a diverse range of projects across all transport modes.

2. Old Oak Common, Crossrail Depot.

1. RPS was the lead designer for 12km of new dual three-lane motorway and upgrade to 16km of existing motorway. This major transport infrastructure project completes the M8 motorway link between the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland.

2. A major part of the Crossrail project comprises the main maintenance hub for servicing the 65 Crossrail trains supplied by Bombardier. The depot houses a wheel lathe, engine drop pit and various staff accommodation facilities. RPS used a BIM platform to undertake architecture and structural engineering services plus principal designer role under CDM regulations.

3. Highly commended at the British Construction Industry Awards, RPS had multiple roles at Guernsey Airport. We undertook planning and environmental commissions to gain consent for the airport’s entire airside infrastructure. We also carried out the engineering design, on site supervision and project management of the complete runway realignment and reconstruction.

2. 55 Colmore Row, Birmingham.

1. The New National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo is one of Norway’s most important public building projects. It will occupy a highly sensitive waterfront site next to the Nobel Peace Centre. RPS is project managing the development of this 54,600m² complex.

2. RPS helped to transform a Grade II listed building in a conservation area to provide 160,000ft² Grade A office space, including a new 6th floor. RPS provided Cost Consultancy and Principal Designer services.

3. Kingston Riverside is a luxury residential development providing 210 private residences arranged over two towers of 10 and 15 storeys linked by a 6 storey block. RPS acted as Employer’s Agent, Cost Manager and Principal Designer.
