EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTIONThe core of RPS’ brand thinking is built upon years of existing carefully considered ideas but from time to time we review these Brand Messages and graphics to try and reflect current changes in the Group, its structure, activities and also developments in the world in which we operate.

Our brand developments are typically carried out as a series of evolutionary steps rather than any major jumps. We try to make any new graphic devices compatible with existing communications to minimise the costs associated with replacement of obsolete material.

INTRODUCTIONWe believe that developing and delivering an effective RPS brand strategy can help us build our reputation, make us stand out from our competition and project our values. This will help us to attract the best clients, staff and investors in our business.

This guide is intended to portray and explain the key elements of the RPS brand itself, along with some of the thinking behind their development. Examples are provided of how the brand elements have been used to develop various pieces of corporate and brand communications.

As with all brands a key factor in their effectiveness is in their consistent use within the communications we generate and at our facilities and locations around the world.

The RPS graphic identity is made up of clear and carefully developed brand elements that mean we can be consistent in the way we develop our documents.

Understanding the brand elements and how they are used collectively is the basis for producing compelling and effective documents that also help build the corporate brand.

The brand elements that can be used to create powerful, consistent graphic communications are:

n A short summary statement about the activities involved (for the relevant business region or the Group).

n The use of Value Messages that are appropriate for the target audience either one at a time or using the Integrated Values Diagram (see page 10).

n High quality images related to RPS projects.

n The RPS logo or brandmarque.

n RPS fonts and colour palette.

n The RPS Grid.

Brand Elements | Value Messages

VALUE MESSAGESAs a multidisciplinary consultancy RPS benefits from wider communications than simply listing its service capabilities and the sectors in which it operates. How RPS thinks and conducts its business is the essence of what makes RPS different from all other consultancies.

The value messages summarise our core values, strengths and philosophies. These messages are to be used across the group in marketing and internal communications where appropriate.

In order to keep some consistency the short heading text should always be used as depicted here and not typeset using other fonts and weights etc. Each value has a colour assigned to it and it should not be changed, although RPS blue PMS281 or white out reversal can be used if appropriate. Each value message can be used with or without a short explanatory paragraph. The graphic should never be smaller than 103mm in width.

These messages are available to download as outlined vector graphics on the RPS intranet.

Hexagon Diagram as shown in Group Review Brochure (Jan 2017)

INTEGRATED VALUES DIAGRAMThe RPS Integrated Values Diagram has been developed as a flexible and cohesive way of combining our value messages with a particular Unique Selling Point (USP) or key facts from various parts of our business.

These USPs or key facts are to be contained within the dominant central hexagon, while the value messages remain connected and constant around the outside.

The backgrounds used to hold the diagram should be striking and effective images that are related to areas where RPS projects have been carried out.

The diagram is shown as it appears in the Group Review (Jan 2017).

HEXAGON & DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSThe hexagon device is more effective if used sparsely throughout communications. The device is not to be overused and should be mainly restricted to the Integrated Values Diagram and brochure cover designs. The inside spreads can take subtle cues from small slices of the hexagon but project images inside hexagon shaped boxes are not to be used within the contents of brochures/case studies etc.

The current Group Review and Europe brochures, are shown below and on the next page, for examples of how elements of the hexagon can be used.

Other considerations when designing brochure pages are:

n Vertical bars can be used on main brochures (Group, Regional, Sector) but not on data sheets or case studies. The bars can be coloured using the RPS colour palette or may contain a strip of image relating to the main image on that spread.

n Small images should ideally have one curved corner, although not essential if the software used does not allow this. Large images should bleed off the page.

PHOTOGRAPHSIt is an essential part of the RPS brand expression to choose the correct photographs for brochures to create striking, memorable images that stand out and grab attention. Weak or amateur looking photos create an unprofessional image and are off-putting to clients. It is especially important to source impactful and memorable images for brochure covers and avoid the inclusion of poorly taken project pictures. RPS employs a number of graphic design and marketing staff who can assist with image sourcing and editing. Avoid using images that are too contrived or could be misconstrued.

Professional photographers or image libraries should be used for important projects. Be wary of using stock images of people as they can look staged - actual RPS staff are preferred for people images. Remember to use stock images in full accordance with their download terms or it will attract large fines and to keep a clear record of final-cut image sources and restrictions. You can also utilise Clere for their large inhouse stock of images when commissioning brochure design projects. Remember to check restrictions with them and keep a record of image use.

Images should always be related to RPS projects. If it is not possible to get a good actual project image, a geographical location of interest close to where the project was carried out can be used but should be approved by the project manager/client and captioned accurately.

Photographs should:

n Follow the rules of good composition.

n Have colours that are bold, bright and interesting.

n Be professionally taken or sourced and high resolution (min 300dpi for printed collateral).

n Be relevant to the project.

Photographs should not:

n Have dull, boring foregrounds.

n Have dreary colours.

n Be poor quality phone/camera images.

Exclusion Zone BoundaryFor most communication materials the preferred position for the logo is the upper left hand corner as shown. In some instances this may not be appropriate and in such cases the preferred secondary position for the logo is bottom left hand corner.

Always refer to the Design Framework for exact logo position and size, and consider the other basic elements to help decide the most appropriate positioning.

A clear area should be left around the logo to ensure clarity and consistency of usage. As a rule this should be equal to the height of the RPS letters within the logo block.

The exclusion zone is also intended to prevent the logo being placed at the very edge of documents and signs etc.

Only use logos published on the intranet. http://groupnet.rpsgroup.com

The RPS logo should always appear in RPS blue where possible. On occasion the RPS logo will have to appear on dark backgrounds (because our clients or partners create or specify the graphic layouts) and for these situations a white version is available. Please avoid creating graphic designs where the white logo becomes necessary.

The logo should never be stretched, made up of other typefaces, colour, patterns, be modified or adapted.

The lettering should always appear in white unless the reverse logo is used where they should appear in blue.

Do not attempt to create new logos without seeking proper authorisation. New logos must be authorised by a divisional Managing Director acting in agreement with the Business Information Manager at Head Office.

ACQUISITION BRAND INTEGRATION PLANNINGWhen businesses join RPS they very often have close ties to their exiting brand which will often have been developed and nurtured as their businesses grew. Initially these businesses often have concerns about their existing clients and staff becoming unsettled by any change.

Our experience is that it is effective communication about the changes happening in the business during and after acquisition that is the most important factor for clients and staff. They want to know that operational service delivery and key staff will not be effected first and foremostly and are less immediately worried about the name of the company or its logo.

Each acquisition tends to be unique in their level of allegiance to their own brands and on many occasions it has been decided to develop an interim co-brand such as RPS CgMs.

We recommend that these co-brands should be used for a maximum of two years from the date of acquisition. These co-brand logos should be prepared by Clere and approved by BIU before use.

Examples of co-brands include:

RPS FONTSThe considered and intelligent use of typographic design makes a message more striking and easily understood.

Our fonts themselves also form an important part of our identity. Consistent use of our corporate typefaces and following typographic style guidance helps to build a better recognition of the RPS corporate brand.

The only fonts used by RPS are:

Gill Sans The main RPS font for professionally printed material (brochures and PDFs with embedded fonts) should be:

Gill Sans Bold

ABCDEFGHIJK 1234567890 abcdefghijk 1234567890

Gill Sans RegularABCDEFGHIJK 1234567890 abcdefghijk 1234567890

Gill Sans LightABCDEFGHIJK 1234567890 abcdefghijk 1234567890

Arial If documents are to be sent out electronically as Word files on disc or as an email attachment in a file format where fonts are not automatically embedded, then Arial should be used to ensure page formatting is not compromised when the document is opened remotely. This would not be a concern with a file saved in pdf format where fonts cannot alter.

Arial Bold

ABCDEFGHIJK 1234567890 abcdefghijk 1234567890

n Bullets appear as a single block NB. Gill Sans can be used in pdf documents as long as fonts are embedded during creation.

RPS CORE COLOURColour plays an important part in brand recognition and in shaping perceptions. Often brands can be recognised by the colour or combination of colours used in their communication materials.

This section explains what our corporate colours are and how they should be used.

Brand Elements | Colour

In order to allow for more diversity and variation in the design of certain of our documents a new range of approved additional colours is available.

These colours have been chosen to complement our Core Colour. This palette avoids strong primary colours which may clash with the RPS Core Colour and offers design flexibility according to the required tone of the document and its target audience.

Use of these colours and their combinations needs to be carefully managed as part of a well thought out design process and must be approved by RPS’ Business Information Unit (BIU) based in Head Office or Clere.

ADDITIONAL COLOURS

Please note: These colours should not be used on the front cover of documents. These colours can be used for highlights and internal spreads.

* Please use PMS colour references and do not colour match to printouts in this guide.

Think of your body as a machine, you need to:

n Provide it with the right fuel Eat the right food at the right times

n Service it regularly Regularly exercise to maintain its efficiency

n Keep the battery topped up Get the appropriate rest and recovery time

Daily rituals for high energy:

n Relax before bedtime

n Get a good 6-8 hours continuous sleep each day

n Eat within an hour of waking up

n Keep re-fuelling every 3 hours

n Eat the right foods

n Drink more water

n Take regular breaks during the day to keep you refreshed and focused

n Move more during the day

n Schedule regular exercise sessions through the week

It is a driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that he or she is fit to drive and has had sufficient sleep before commencing work.

The Right Fuel

Driving for a living can make it difficult to access healthy food. As a consequence, drivers tend to eat high sugar and high fat meals from service stations and vending machines.

The poor diet and sedentary lifestyle of many drivers means that this group has a high incidence of obesity and gastrointestinal complaints such as stomach ulcers. To avoid these problems drivers

need to ensure that they have eaten a healthy meal before they start their day and that they have access to a healthy meal during the day. Drivers should particularly avoid food and drinks high in sugar, such as chocolate, as these give you a temporary sugar-rush and then leave you feeling sluggish.

Service it Regularly

Exercise as a simple solution to boost your energy - the fitter you are, the more efficient your body becomes in using the energy resources it has available. In other words, it can deliver more energy from less resource; and can perform better, and for longer, when the pressure is really on

It is a driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that he or she is fit to drive. If driving a company car is a critical part of you doing your job then there are a number of common sense lifestyle adjustments that you can make to prevent fatigue.

The UK Department for Transport report:

n That at least 10% of accidents on UK roads are due to tiredness; an amount that can be doubled (20%) for motorways and other monotonous roads.

n Fall-asleep crashes are much more likely to result in death or serious injury, owing to the higher speed at impact.

HEADING

rpsgroup.com

An important constituent of the Design Framework is the grid. The grid is a layout structure upto which the main elements of any publication are hung. It provides a Group-wide consistency to the look and feel of every publication. The grid does not need to be rigidly adhered to but is an invisible background framework for helping to organise graphics.

RPS GRID

The new gridThe upper section includes the RPS brand identity in a consistent position and colour, along with the title of the document or main communication heading.

The lower section of the page contains the grid. We use this grid to tell a visual and verbal story or introduce the communication by containing a picture or pictures. It can be used to contain colour, shade and typography.

The use of round corners is optional as part of the design palette.

The RPS footer reflects the hexagon used on a range of marketing brochures, folders, newsletters and other promotional material.

Along with the heading format, the footer helps to set the consistent branding style of the page and makes it instantly recognisable while maximising the space available for the other key visual elements.

The Adobe Indesign template is available to download on the RPS intranet.

Please note that the A4 grid was updated in January 2017.

Keep the battery topped up - protect your sleeplack of sleep, or having poor quality sleep, will directly impact on your performance at work. Sleep is this important to your success. It’s the time when your body physically repairs itself and when the brain moves information from short-term to long-term memory, freeing up working capacity that you need during your waking hours.

For optimal rest and recovery, for both your body and your brain, most people ideally need seven to eight hours of sleep consistently every night.n Plan your sleep sensibly – for example, if you need 8 hours sleep a night, make sure you spend eight hours in bed – so if your alarm is set to go off at 6.30am make sure you’re in bed at 10.30pm

n Establish a consistent bed time routine – learn to relax and wind down before going to bed so that you’re ready to go to sleep when you do go to bedn Avoid strenuous exercise two to three hours before you go to bed

n Get you bedroom environment right – it should be dark, cool and quietn Avoid eating a large meal in the two hours before bedtime or going to bed hungry

Keep Yourself RefreshedTo keep yourself refreshed while driving, take regular breaks and keep hydrated. It is thought that most people are dehydrated most of the time and driving in an air conditioned car will dehydrate you further. Dehydration saps your energy; just a 2% drop into dehydration can cause concentration levels to drop by up to 20%, a critical issue for drivers.

Try to keep hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. To check your hydration levels check the colour of your urine when you go to the toilet. Other risks to be aware ofThere are other considerations you need to be aware of on an on-going basis.

If you feel tired at the wheel:STOP DRIVING

Park somewhere safe and call your destination, if necessary, to let them know that you’ve been delayedHave a cup of strong coffee followed by a 15-20 minute nap; or just a 15-20 minute nap

Caffeine takes about 20 minutes to take effect, so use this “window of opportunity” to have a short nap of no more than 15-20 minutes. If you sleep for much longer than 20 minutes you can fall into a deep sleep and wake up feeling groggy. It is essential to remember that this advice only offers short-term relief from driver tiredness. It is an emergency countermeasure to driver tiredness and is not a replacement for a good night’s sleep.

All Day Peak Performance

Oil Spill Awareness Training FOR THE OFFSHORE RENEWABLE INDUSTRY

rpsgroup.com/energy

In line with Marine Management Organisation (MMO) requirements for Marine Pollution Contingency Plans (MPCPs) and the Renewable UK Integrated Offshore Emergency Response Good practice Guidelines for Offshore Renewable Energy Developments, there is an increasing focus on oil spill prevention and response. Although the risk of pollution due to oil spillage is small in comparison with the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) oil and gas industry, the risk still exists due to vessel activity associated with operations and maintenance, and due to the volumes of gear oil contained within a typical turbine assembly. Therefore the risks need due regard during planning of operations and maintenance regimes.

The MMO require that a Marine Pollution Contingency Plan (MPCP) be in place for both the construction and operations phases of offshore renewables developments. This ensures that due consideration of the pollution risks associated with operations has been undertaken, and that procedures and responsibilities are defined to ensure a timely and effective response to a marine pollution incident.

The new guidance requires that duty holders should have suitable and effective pollution response procedures in place that are in line with related emergency response plans.

Duty holders are likely to have environmental and pollution prevention and control duties in two main areas:

n Offshore Assets: Construction, operations and maintenance, and decommissioning of offshore assets;

n Vessels: Owners and operators of vessels will have environmental responsibilities under applicable regulations.

The guidelines recommend a precautionary and preventative approach to managing foreseeable pollution incidents, applying the general principles of established legal reference sources (for example, the UKCS oil and gas industry legislation). The guidelines also recommend a robust planning process to identify all foreseeable pollution risks using suitable and established risk assessment processes, and ensure that the findings of these risk assessments are fully integrated into the relevant emergency response and pollution contingency planning.

Specific Marine Licence requirements in relation to pollution prevention, planning and response also need to be fulfilled.

To complement MPCPs, RPS is able to offer an Oil Spill Awareness Training Course for the offshore renewables industry. This course has been developed and is delivered by in house staff that have many years of practical experience in the field of oil spill pollution response.

RPS has been accredited by the Nautical Institute to deliver Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved oil spill response training to the UKCS oil and gas industry since 2008. RPS has an extensive history with offshore renewables and has supported this sector since 2001. As an accredited training course provider, RPS is able to develop bespoke training courses in spill response tailored to clients’ requirements.

SUSTAINABILITYSustainability and the production of RPS documents

We specify the use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited sustainably sourced papers and boards, and biodegradable lamination where required.

The conscious use of electronic media versus papa media is increasing all the time: for greater communication breadth, ongoing editorial access and in environmental interests as more focus is placed upon recycled paper bleaching impacts and the management of its by-products In striving to reduce these environmental impacts the brightness and blemish free consistency of premium recycled paper has become more variable. For those parts of the RPS business which focus specifically on the waste recycling sector it makes sense to continue using recycled paper and to emblazon the advisory recycle symbol on their company stationery. For everyone else we specify the use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited sustainably sourced papers and boards, and biodegradable lamination.

There is no restriction on reproducing the advisory recycle logo where appropriate. Though our FSC paper suppliers are licensed to feature the FSC logo on their paper packaging RPS is not licensed to do so on its printed materials. Where possible a statement such as this can still be used: Printed sustainably on FSC certified paper.

Remember to avoid unnecessary paper consumption and keep things electronic where viable.
