What It Says On The Tin!
Driving back the other Sunday night, after seeing my daughters and en-
joying ‗Pan Asian Cuisine‘ from a new restaurant not far from where they
live, I was going through the various radio stations before settling down
to the M6 and M1! As I‘m not into the classics or the history of hip-hop
and rap I settled on The Money Programme on Radio Four! A strange
choice because I have no money worries! I have no money to worry
about! Nevertheless, during the programme there was an old well worn-
phrase ‗if the deal seems to be too good to be true, then it more than
likely is!

CHURCH CALENDAR FOR NOVEMBER 2011
This adage can, however, hold a few surprises! On a recent visit to a
shopping centre a friend enquired about having broadband at the stand
of a well known satellite television and internet provider - you know the
one I mean, you get a clue to their brand name every time you look up at
the sun or moon! The salespeople did their job with consummate skill
and attention to the needs of their prospective new customer, asking
what use was needed from broadband and then giving assurance the ba-
sic speed offered would be more than enough. The salespeople, with an
eye to a chance, with no obligation, included in the price package the
television and recorder! The offer was basic with no frills and a rea-
sonable price. Then came the rub! The salesperson asked for the post-
code to check broadband availability. When the computer showed the
relevant information the sales person gave one of those looks which
meant all the sales speak that has just been used has come to nothing!
To cut a long story short, the only package on offer for broadband in
the area where my friend lived was the provision of a slower service and
which was to cost eight pounds more! So the good offer suddenly
turned to having less of a service but the cost would be more! A bit of
a twist on the above adage!
In John‘s gospel chapter three and verse sixteen, we find an offer that
is ‗what it says on the tin‘.
‗For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that who-ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life‘.
The cost of this promise has already been paid by Christ‘s own sacrifice
for us. In fact Jesus went further, he also said ‗I am come that they
might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly‘ (John Chapter 10 v 10b). The promise with no frills starts now with meat on
the table today and not pie in the sky tomorrow!
As we gather speed to the end of 2011 why not take a moment to think
about this exclusive offer on the table, it might just change your life!

"Our next meeting which will be on Monday 21st No-
vember will be our last normal meeting of the year as
next month we go out for our Christmas Dinner at the
Walnut Tree. The Speaker will be Paul Howard who is
coming to talk about his work as a Freelance Photogra-
pher. Who knows, we may get a few handy hints on pro-
ducing better photographs ourselves and reduce the risk of chop-
ping people's heads off!!! We meet in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm, all
very welcome, the cost, which includes refreshments/banquet, is
£2 for visitors".

News from Rothersthorpe School
Last month, we enjoyed our annual visit from the Life Edu-
cation Caravan where ‗Harold‘ the giraffe encourages all
the children to stay healthy!
It was lovely to see so many of our parents in church for
our Harvest service this year and the children enjoyed meeting many of
the village residents when they delivered the small harvest parcels after
the service. The bulk of the donations were again sent to the Hope Centre
in Northampton.
Our school was very fortunate to be chosen by Wincanton (Sainsbury‘s
distribution centre) to receive free gifts for all the children. The younger
children were given High Visibility waistcoats to wear over their school
coats and the older children were given brightly coloured hats. Represen-
tatives from Sainsbury‘s and the NCC Road Safety team talked to the
children about the importance of wearing bright clothing on dark nights
and we held an impromptu ‗fashion show‘ as the younger children showed
off their new waistcoats to the rest of the school!
Jen Harrison, our PCSO has been into school recently to talk to the older
children about anti-social behaviour (with special reference to Halloween)
Both she and her colleague Graham will return in November to talk to all
the children, reinforcing the message about Keeping Safe / Road Safety.
School re-opens after the half term break on Tuesday 1st November as we
start the very busy half term that culminates with our Christmas
celebrations. Remembrance Day will be our focus during the first couple
of weeks and Poppies will be on sale in school.
We will be holding our usual Mufti Day on Friday 18th November, raising
funds for the BBC ‗Children in Need‘ appeal.
If your child is due to start school in 2012 (date of birth Sept 2007
– August 2008), we are holding two sessions for prospective parents
on: Thursday 3rd November at 1.30pm
and Friday 11th November at 9.30am
Please telephone Mrs Watt in the school office to arrange an ap-
pointment or find out more information about the online application
process. (830995)

the site according to the hit counter but very little
participation. There are plenty of opportunities to
have your say about events in the village or if you
would like me to add them then please let me know.
Latest postings: School Field Usage; Village Plan, Neighbourhood
watch, Police Street Briefings and much more... Please let me know if you would like some help or would like to become more involved.

LAUNCH OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE ACRE’S BULK OIL BUYING SCHEME
Northamptonshire ACRE is delighted to announce
the launch of a new venture that we hope will be
good for you, good for the environment and good
for Northamptonshire ACRE.
WHAT’S THE SCHEME?
Northamptonshire ACRE will be using the model of a local buying
syndicate for domestic heating oil and rolling it out across the
county. We believe there will be great strength in harnessing the
purchasing power of the many rural communities who are without
mains gas so that together, oil-buyers will be able to make
significant savings. Experience has already shown that it‘s possible
to get a discount of around £50 on a single order. And since the
scheme is only in its infancy, we see no reason why we can‘t improve
on that. There are other benefits too – reduced carbon footprint
(yes, really), a move towards renewable energy sources and a
contribution to funds to support Northamptonshire.
WHY IS NORTHAMPTONSHIRE ACRE DOING THIS?
As a publicly funded charity, we know that there will be difficult
times ahead and we want to safeguard our future and our ability to
advise and support rural communities across Northamptonshire. Our
aim is that not only will we help households to save money – especially
important in Northamptonshire‘s rural areas where we know there is
far greater ‗fuel poverty‘ than in our urban areas - but we will also
be able to generate some income for Northamptonshire ACRE. And
you can be entirely confident that this is not a scam – it‘s simply
about bulk-buying.
AREN’T THERE LOTS OF SYNDICATES ALREADY IN EXISTENCE?
Yes. We don‘t know exactly how many but there are some communities
who have been doing this locally for some while. We have no wish to
take any schemes over – but if that local purchasing power can be
scaled up to something much bigger, then everyone will benefit. And
for communities who don‘t yet have a local scheme, this provides an
easy way for you to get one, with very little work.
WHAT ARE YOU ASKING OF ME?
We are an organisation that is rooted in local community action, and
we want to run the scheme in a way that reflects this philosophy. So
we are looking for local people to play a part in getting things off the
ground and helping it to grow.
The key to making this work will be having a network of community
co-ordinators who are willing to collate local members‘ monthly oil
orders and pass them on to us, and who will then let the local members
know the cost per litre and the delivery date. That‘s pretty much it.
No negotiating oil prices, no handling money. For doing this, you will
get FREE membership of the scheme – an annual saving of £20. We
know that our newsletter readers are keen and active participants in
local community life and your local networks and contacts will be
important – the more members the scheme has, the stronger the
buying power! We hope you will be willing to take on this very modest
role so that we can get up and running in your village.
INTERESTED? NOT INTERESTED?
If you think this could be of interest to you or your community, get in
touch with us on 01604 765888 or email: [email protected]
If you aren‘t interested yourself but can think of someone who might
be, please pass the information on. We‘ll be happy to answer any
questions.

Village Plan
The first meeting of the village planning group took place on 24th
October. The group have started to develop a village survey to es-
tablish what amenities villagers currently use, what may be required
in the future and how the village could be improved.
This may take a little time to develop but we would hope to be able
to deliver this to everyone early in the New Year.
If you would like to participate in the planning group or have any
views about the village and its future please feel free to contact me
on [email protected], phone 830321 or drop a note through the
door at The Pig Yard, 35 Church Street or leave a comment on the
village web site: http://rothersthorpe.info/wordpress/?p=990

Update on Church Repairs
Just to keep you up to date - we've now got nearly all of the estimates in for work which needs to be carried out on the roof, the stonework and the windows. The next phase will be to start applying for grants, and fund-raising. If anyone feels they can help, then do please shout - we need all the help we can get to preserve our historic Church. Many thanks to Carol Morphy for selling Christmas cards at The Chequers. This has kick-started our repair fund. All ideas welcome. Just on the off-chance that someone may like to sponsor a "chunk" of work - like a new window, or section of the roof..... then we'd love to hear from you!
Thank you to the "Tuesday Afternoon Brigade"
Another thank you ... this time to those who came and helped out on Tues-day afternoons. This started as an impromptu gathering to tackle a couple of jobs in the Churchyard, and ended up as a weekly gathering, with many tasks completed over the summer months. Your time and effort has been very much appreciated - the results of your efforts are self-evident to any-one walking past or through the Churchyard. I don't think it has been this well-maintained for years. (and we had some fun too). Result!

Neighbourhood Watch
Delivered with this newsletter is the new NHW leaf-
let issued by South Northants Neighbourhood
Watch team, the government has ceased funding
for leaflets for Neighbourhood Watch, so they have
produced this new leaflet, please take time to read
it, and make a note of the web site on the back, the
web site is still being put together, but hopefully in time will be able to
offer all the help and information needed.
STREET BRIEFINGS
There is to be a Street Briefing in the village on 9th November, this will
be held at the crossroads of Banbury Lane and Kislingbury Road, (by
the bus shelter). Our local PCSO will be in attendance, please do
come along and meet with us to discuss any concerns you may have
regarding the village.
Please do check out the NHW page on the village website, if we have
any reported incidents then we will put them on the village website.
Please do report any incidents to your village co-ordinators, we
always try hard to work in co-ordination with our Police Community
Support Officers, who are always happy to help the village in anyway
they can, but without up to date knowledge this can be difficult.
No doubt many of you are aware of the damage done to school
property during the school holidays. In order to try to alleviate some of
problems we propose to patrol the school outbuildings during school
holidays, and at weekends, whilst we are aware we cannot “police”
this, we hope that knowing the area is “under patrol” might deter
any possible mischief.
If you feel you can help us by being one of our “patrollers” please
contact us on 831020.
I have looked into the possibility of having our village made a
“NO COLD CALLING AREA”.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) as we have not had any reported inci-
dents lately of distraction burglaries we do not qualify for this.
Reports of Road Rage
We have a report of a number of occasions where members of the vil-lage have been harassed by someone on a motorbike, the police have been informed and have dealt promptly with the matter, but we are keen to keep on top of this and if there are any more incidents, also we are keen to keep the police notified.

beginning of the meeting.
Please come along and participate in your local community

Rothersthorpe Village Hall.
New comers to the Village
may not be aware that the
Village Hall in Church Street
shares its space with the
Primary School in a
community building which is
possibly unique in Northamp-
tonshire. The site is owned
by Northamptonshire County
Council and during the school day the School use the
whole building but after 6pm and at weekends and school holidays
the Hall is used by the Village. A cross charging arrangement is in
place between the Village Hall Management Committee (VHMC)
and the School which pays for the use of electricity, water,
cleaning and maintenance of the whole building.
The VHMC operate its own charging system
for all hall bookings. The Hall can be hired in
various ways; half hall, whole hall, committee
room or the whole of the Village Hall area.
Obviously different rates apply to the area
you would like to book.
Although the Village Hall is booked for the evenings of most
weekdays by village clubs and users it is always
worth a call to Jenny Dellar, the Village Hall book-
ing clerk, on 01604 831929 to see if there are any
spaces that may suit your requirements.
Coming up to Christmas and the New Year now is
the time to make your booking for the seasonal
period.
The Village Hall
All bookings must be made through Jenny Dellar. Currently the
VHMC have a special hire rate for all bona vide village use which
is really good value considering this includes heating, lighting, use
of chairs, tables, toilets, a modern kitchen with cooker,
microwave and running hot water. The Hall is always in a very
neat, clean, warm and tidy state just waiting for your use.
Just a few major points to remember when hiring the
Hall; Maximum number of
persons at any one time in the
hall is 200; no smoking laws
apply; permission to use the
School field must be gained from the
School. (The School field is not part of the
hall hire and any Village Hall insurance does
not cover you on the playing field).
If you should hire the hall and wish to sell alcohol or distribute
alcohol or hot food late at night or have entertainment that the
Hall is not licensed for you will need to get a Temporary Events
Notice (TENS) from South Northants Council (SNC) for which
you will have to pay SNC and it takes a few weeks to be
processed. Don‘t forget there are neighbours to the Hall so
consider them and please leave the premises as quietly as
possible.
Please do not let all that put you off using the Village Hall. It is a
really superb facility that the village are very proud of and was
gained by the hard work and endeavour of older village
inhabitants sadly most departed and the whole building is the
envy of many and comes at such reasonable rates of hire.
