Seward Middle School Healthy Schools Program National Bronze Award

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a national organization founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation. This organization was established in response to the rapid increase in childhood obesity rates over the last three decades. They work with schools, companies, community organizations, healthcare professionals, and families to build healthier environments for children. The Alliance gave awards to 250 schools nationwide with Seward Middle School as the sole school representing Alaska. What did we do to earn this award? There are extensive requirements that needed proof of qualification and we met those in the nutrition and beverage categories, daily physical education for all students, stand-alone health class and cooking class, promotion of healthy fruits and vegetables, promotion of exercise after school for staff and students just to name a few areas of excellence. I would like to give a special thank you to the businesses who donated prizes for our students and staff participation in healthy activities and nutrition. These businesses included SPRD, Major Marine Tours, REI Inc., Resurrection Roadhouse and Woody’s Thai Restaurant.

U.S .Senator Lisa Murkowski visited Seward Middle School.

The Senator gave students an overview of what it is like to be a U.S. Sena-

tor, keying in on the fact that she

gets to travel often around Alaska

and stating “It’s what I do”. As a

U.S. Senator she made clear the

importance of traveling to Alas-

ka’s diverse schools to better rep-

resent them. Senator Murkowski

is a third generation Alaskan and

has lived in many regions of the

state.

She expressed a great apprecia-

tion for teachers and emphatically

shared that being a middle school

teacher was her career choice

when she was young. “My grandma was a teacher and I always thought

that was so cool!”

Senator Murkowski presented the school with two gifts. The first, a book

called Bird Girl, an Alaskan Indian legend about two adventurers. The sec-

ond, an American Flag that was flown over the United States Capitol.
