What does it mean that our Father is in heaven?
For more years than I care to admit, once again this August Bank Holiday Week I took on the role of Chaplain to the members of the North Staffordshire Boys and Girls Brigade annual camp on a camp site ten miles short of Blackpool.
Apart from eating and laughing too much, my role is to lead the whole camp in daily worship of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit along with leading the Officers Prayers before breakfast each morning. In these early morning prayers this year, I took the leaders through ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ posing the question ‘Do we say the prayer with too much familiarity?’ For if we say the prayer seriously it is not only very challenging as we make some phenomenal statements about and to God our Father, we also undertake to live in a way that is often far from our personal day to day experience!
This is no truer than when we open the prayer with ‘Our father in Heaven’. This very statement not only places God in the supernatural realm we also have both the audacity and privilege of calling Him Father.
A title that can either have warm and gratifying overtones as we have a good experience of our own earthly Father, or fills us with fear and loathing as put upon God our negative experiences of an earthly Father.
As I too struggled to put the picture of a powerful and awesome God with the picture of an intimate loving God that stoops down to us and not only to call Him Father but Abba Father, Daddy.
The following extract from ‘I Am Your Father’ by Mark Stibbe (p119 Monarch Books 2010) helped both me and the officers in our reflections and struggles, and I now offer the same to you to ponder on. So the next time you pray ‘Our Father in heaven’ it may take on a new dimension......
It means that there’s no one bigger than our Dad – our Dad rules.
He flung stars into speckled space.
He fashioned the blazing sun and deep lagoons of clouds and cluster.
He created the planets, the constellations and the galaxies.
He conceived the Milky Way, the Helix Nebula and the Pleiades.
He made bubbles and arcs, nebulae and auras.
He paints supernovas in effervescent colours and stellar jets of irridescent glory.
He out thinks the physicist and he dazzles the theologian.
He preoccupies the astronomer and inspires the poet with abundant wonder.
He is beyond the reach of the Hubble telescope or the probing range of any Orbiter.
He is what Einstein called “The Superior Reasoning Power” and the Bible calls “the Father of Heavenly Lights”.
He is my Dad and He is your Dad.
Our Dad, who is in Heaven, the Third Heaven.
Who swells in unapproachable light and will one day make His home with us, on this tiny dot that is Earth.

VILLAGE SPEED WATCH
I HOPE NONE OF YOU WERE CAUGHT
Well the first week we did find a few people
speeding through Banbury Lane and Kislingbury
Road, however by the second week this number
reduced considerably helped by some wet days when the gun is not
used due to the risks of drivers braking sharply.
A few statistics from the first week:-
Over 8 sessions and a total of 6 hours
20 minutes the speed gun was in use.
Speeders identified a total of 29,
13 female & 16 male drivers
Popular car colour silver closely followed
by blue
The worst offenders drove Volkswagen
cars (only 5 though) but there were a wide car variety of offenders.
I could not believe the increased number of car manufacturers and
models – gone are the days of Morris 1000 and Triumph Heralds!!
Many thanks to all the volunteers who turned up regardless of time
and weather. Jane McCarthy
Thruppsters
Meet in Mumford Drive on Monday 1st. October
at 2.00 for a trip out for tea at the Bell
Plantation Garden Centre Towcester.

Rothersthorpe Village Fair
Many thanks to all who helped and to those who came – I believe
that all who came enjoyed it. We raised just over £450 for Church
funds. This will be matched by Barclays for the repair fund.
As well as an opportunity to boost Church funds, this event has been
an invitation for village groups and local charities to raise funds for
their own good causes. This year, those benefiting included Guide
Dogs for the Blind (courtesy of the Skittles team), the WI,
Thruppsters, Tools for Self Reliance (Northampton) and Caring and
Sharing.
I have now organised the fair for the past 5 years and others have
organised similar events in the past. It’s probably time for a re-think
and for me to pass the baton on to someone else. It’s not hard
work – just a bit time consuming. The hardest part is attracting the
volunteers! This year, although I advertised in 2 successive Village
Newsletters, I didn’t have time to chase people, nor ask individuals.
Thank goodness for those I’ve listed above who are pro-active in
providing stalls and side-shows and just get on with it! Thanks also to
“the usual suspects”
for helping with
setting up, clearing
away and manning the
stalls, not forgetting
Mr Dickens and his
colleagues on the
steam roller.
If you’re interested
in making sure this
little bit of Village Life continues, do let me know.

News from Rothersthorpe School:
To celebrate our return to school in September, we started
the new school year with two days of artistic activities on the theme of the children’s book ‘’Tom’s Midnight Garden”. The children took part in a range of activities including designing and making a garden and a kite, helping to make a button mosaic of a butterfly, making wind chimes and painting their own ‘Impressions of Monet’. On Friday afternoon, we all enjoyed a fabulous performance of the story from our regular visiting theatre company.
Our Olympic Legacy carried on into September, as we finally managed to hold
our Olympic Sports day, which had been cancelled in July because of bad weather. Team ‘China’ were victorious and all our parents enjoyed watching the opening ceremony dances!
Continuing the Olympic theme, we were fortunate to have a
visit from Mark Fosbrook (Fossy to his friends), a paralympian, who shared his knowledge of wheelchair basketball, volleyball and rugby!
Hot School meals are proving to be a hit with many of the
children in school – toad in the hole the favourite so far!
We will be holding our annual Harvest Festival service in the
church on Monday 8th October at 9.15am. As always, the gifts donated by the children will be distributed to villagers and then the bulk of the provisions will be given to a local charity.
School closes for half term on Friday 26th October and re-opens to children
on Monday 5th November.
If your child is due to start school in 2013 (date of birth Sept 2008 – August
2009), we are holding two sessions for prospective parents on:
Friday 9th November at 9.15am & Thursday 15th November at 1.30pm
Please telephone Mrs Watt in the school office (830995) to
arrange an appointment or find out more information about the online application process. An application for a school place must be submitted for all children, even if they live in the village or have siblings already at the school. Carol Watt

Do you have skill or interest that other people would like to join in? A Gardening Group could be another idea,
there are a few spare slots during the week at
the Village Hall, also a Youth Club could be
resurrected perhaps if there are some
interested parents or youth leaders. Why not
have a chat to your friends and see how many
might be interested. Costs are low for the Hall
hire so this need not be an expensive venture. R

"It's our AGM next time, to be held on Monday
15th October at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. We'll
be voting for next year's committee and president.
This will be followed by a social time and supper. All
to bring a small plate of food for the buffet and
drinks will be provided. We are so pleased that our membership is
increasing but we have room for more and you will be most welcome.
The cost for the evening is £3 which includes supper.
There is a skittles match planned on Tuesday 16th
October against the Ladies Village Team at the Bull
in Harpole. It's important that we get into gear
with our Skittles skills as the Annual W.I. County
competition will be starting just after Christmas.
It has been a busy summer time of activities for
our W.I. with the Queen's Jubilee Celebration at
Holdenby House, the Car Treasure Hunt, the Garden
Party and our Tombola Stall at the Church Fair.
By the time this Newsletter goes out we will have
had our Quiz Night. (see article further on in this newsletter)
There's still more to look forward to with our
November Wine Tasting Evening and the Christmas
Dinner. We have lots of fun and it's brilliant to get
to know new friends.
If any of these activities appeal to you then please
join us anytime. For more information please contact

WI Quiz Night
Jane doesn’t go to the WI because she’s
always so busy but we do like a good quiz so we
decided to co-opt some friends into joining us
for the WI Quiz on Friday September 21st.
It was well attended and a really good night.
Christy did an excellent job as the quiz master with some really
challenging questions.
The half time food was superb mostly created by the ladies of the
WI and there was plenty to eat. It is obvious from the whole evening
that the WI have a really good time at their meetings.
We are looking forward to the next Quiz night. Many thanks to
Rothersthorpe WI!
Have you been collecting used stamps and have nowhere to send them?
The Royal National Institute for the Blind collect and make funds from used stamps. They need the stamp cut off the envelope with a border of approximately 1 cm.
If you do not want to send them yourself bring them in and post them through the door of 35 Church Street and I will forward to RNIB.
They take both foreign and British stamps.

Steve Completes Cycle4Cynthia
Yesterday (23rd September) I took part in Cycle4Cynthia charity cycle ride. Jane is the cyclist in our family and normally I just go along for the ride but because of her recent accident I was left to carry the McCarthy flag on my own without my trainer and motivator. I confess I wasn’t looking forward to it especially as the weather forecast kept getting worse and worse and my fitness levels were not good.
There are many lycra clad people on the event who make light of cycling 50 miles but for me it’s
the toughest physical event I take part in so it is a serious challenge. However it’s in aid of two excellent causes (Cynthia Spencer Hospice and MacMillan Nurses).
After 20 miles I didn’t feel too bad and when it started raining at 30 miles I did have some doubts as to whether I was going to make it. Needless to say, I gritted my teeth and pressed on arriving at the finish after 4 hours and 20 minutes, soaking wet; thoroughly exhausted but still managing a smile. Thanks to Jane’s persistence we managed to raise nearly £500.
Many thanks to all the kind sponsors in the village and if you missed the opportunity and would like to sponsor me then call in at the Pig Yard 35, Church Street or follow this link:

If anyone wishes to join us next year please let us know and we can form a team Rothersthorpe! Steve McCarthy
POTHOLES
Please ensure you contact the County Council
Highways department to report any holes in the
road. Do not assume that someone else has done
it, the more people who bother to report a fault the quicker the
pothole is dealt with.
Ring 0300 1261000 or go to Street Doctor on the
County Council website Northamptonshire.gov.uk
Staying safe on Halloween and Bonfire Night
With Halloween and Bonfire Night approaching, North-
amptonshire Police will be launching an operation to ensure
people in the county can enjoy both evenings safely and
within the law.
There will be increased patrols in identified “Hot Spot” areas
and officers will be on hand to tackle any issues that arise and
offer reassurance. Be spooky but safe if you’re out “Trick or Treating”
Don’t knock on doors with a “No trick or treat sign”.
Children should be accompanied by an adult.
Plan your route — only go to places where you know the
residents.
Keep visible — stay in areas that are well lit and take a
torch.
Don’t go inside any house.
Be careful not to frighten vulnerable people.
Be a bright spark—remember, remember, on the 5th November
You must be over 18 to buy fireworks.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to
possess fireworks in a public place.
It is an offence to throw or discharge a firework in
a street or public place.
If you let off fireworks between 11pm and 7am you
will be breaking the law — except on Bonfire Night
when this extends to midnight.
Don’t forget your pets — keep them safe indoors.
Keep in Contact and Keep informed

Neighbourhood Watch
We are pleased to be able to say that again
we seem to have had a quiet month in our
village.
There have been a couple of incidents in
Kislingbury last week, and as we are only a
short distance away, I think it would be prudent, as always, to be
aware and make sure everything around and inside our homes is
secure.
If you require any tips on how to make your house safer then please
visit the neighbourhood watch page at northamptonnhw.org.uk, also
the Northants police website has an excellent page for
Neighbourhood Watch.
As always if you see anything suspicious then please ring 101.
If you require any further information on anything related to
Neighbourhood Watch then please get in touch. Thank you

Village Web Site The web site continues to get a healthy number of
hits but there are very few posts or comments. If you have any issues about the village that you wish to raise whether it be Speed Watch, Village Play Area, Pot Holes or anything else it is quite straightforward to create a post or add a comment.
Recent updates include: Bulk Oil Prices; WI Quiz
Night; Village Fair; School page update; Parish Council minutes; and more.
Please make the time to take a look. Let me know if there is room for
improvement or if I can help you to use the site – add posts, pictures, or comments. Steve McCarthy (Parish Councillor & Web Site editor)
Good news for domestic oil users
First year savings. The Northants ACRE bulk oil
buying scheme for oil users throughout Northamp-
tonshire has now completed a very successful first
year of operation. Individual members are enjoying
average savings of around £80 per year.
We’d be delighted if you’d like to join our growing membership as
this will help to maximise our ability to negotiate the lowest
possible prices for the benefit of all. Now would be a great time to
join the syndicate and get the benefits for your heavy winter usage.
Dual Fuel opportunity. We are currently investigating
a new opportunity for further savings for those who use
both oil and electricity. Our professional negotiators
would be able to take the electricity needs of our oil
members and negotiate bulk purchase of their
electricity too. A dual fuel opportunity for those reliant
on oil! However, before we take this further we would ask for your
feedback as to whether it is something that would be of interest to
you.
For more details on these opportunities, please contact
Northants ACRE.
