A to Z..............

While on holiday the other year on The Isle of Wight I ran into a local parish

church to avoid a sudden and very powerful downpour. However, instead of

a few moments avoiding the rain I had a very pleasant hour with a group of

people who were there cleaning the Church. When it can time to leave they

gave me a copy of their Church Magazine, the following was the first part of

the magazine I read.............

‘Of Course I’d like to go to Church But’.........

A is for Auntie, who may or may not come to tea.

B is for bed, which won't release me on a Sunday morning.

C is for the Car that would sulk if it was not washed on a Sunday.

D is for the Dinner that we have to prepare.

Page 3: Rothersthorpe Newsletter November 2012

E is for the Enthusiasm that should be found in Church but I can't find it.

F is for that Film on DVD that I need to watch.

G is for Garden that always needs that Sunday touch.

H is for Husband, who won't play his part.

I is for the Ironing that has piled up over the week.

J is for Jealousy, shown by a few in and out of Church.

K is for Knitting which Mum likes to do.

L is for the old Language, it's so out of touch

M is for Money that is always being asked for.

N for all those New tunes I've not heard before.

O is for Oatcakes that might spoil if not eaten today.

P is for the Preparation I must do for Monday.

Q is for the Queer noises that come from the choir.

R is for Rover that needs his Sunday morning walk.

S is for the Sermons that make watching grass grow an attractive alternative,

T is for the Telly that I really must see.

U for the Unfriendliness I sometimes find.

V is for the Voice of the person sitting behind.

W for the Weather that is too cold, too hot, too wet to dry....

X-is for those Extras that come and go.

Y is for the Young Un's that make a noise.

Z is for the Zeal that is just not there.

As I read through the list I smiled and sniggered while at the same time

going ouch, as a couple of the excuses were a little too close for comfort.

Attending church can be a difficulty, an unnerving experience even a

mysterious experience as much of what happens is alien and outside of

normal experience.

However, put aside all the above and try Church with an open heart safe in

the knowledge it’s about encountering the One true living God as revealed in

the Bible as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Once encountered there will be no excuse on earth that will keep you away.

Women’s Institute

Our next meeting will be

Wine Tasting. Have you a

discernable palette? Can you

tell between plonk and a good

wine? We are inviting all

ladies to come and join

us. There will be no charge

so if you have been thinking about coming along this is a good

opportunity. The wine will be accompanied with homemade

Christmas nibbles.

The date is Monday 19th November in the Village Hall at

7.30 pm. You will be really welcome.

We are saddened by the loss of Freda Jones. She was more than

just a member of our Institute she was a good friend. It was

Freda who always referred to us, not as "fellow members" but

"pals" Freda was our Vice President for many years. Those who

attended can never forget the night she organised a game of

bingo, we laughed throughout the evening. She was perhaps the

only one to take part in the County Federation Golf Competition

and came a very respectable 6th.

All of our memories of Freda are happy ones and she will never be

forgotton.

On Tuesday 16th October we played a Skittles

Match against the Village Ladies Team and were

again beaten (narrowly). As before, it was a good

night and many of our team had never played a

match before and some had hardly played at all but

we are confident when we next play we shall have a

better chance. That's 3 - 1 to the Village Ladies. Well done.

News from Rothersthorpe School:

Last month, we enjoyed our annual visit from the Life Education Caravan

where ‘Harold’ the giraffe encourages all the children to stay healthy!

It was lovely to see so many of our parents in church for our Harvest

service this year and the children enjoyed meeting many of the village

residents when they delivered the small Harvest parcels after the ser-

vice. The bulk of the donations were again sent to the Hope Centre in

Northampton. Our retiring collection of £100 was donated to the North-

amptonshire Air Ambulance.

As part of our curriculum this term, Class 2 have been focussing on

‘Special People’. The different aspects of their achievements were cele-

brated at a ‘VIP’ party, where children invited a special guest to join

them. The class read out stories they had written about a special person

in their life, gave a hand made Hindu ‘rakhi’ bracelet to their guest and

then everyone enjoyed the cakes and biscuits which the children had

made for the celebration!

Class 3 spent a day at Holdenby House as part of their ‘Heroes’ topic

this half term. Dressed as evacuees, the children enjoyed the experience

of life as a child during World War Two – but were pleased when the

coach headed back to Rothersthorpe (and their own parents!)

Our Year 5/6 netball team narrowly lost to Gayton School in the final of

the Campion tournament and handed over the trophy we have won for the

past two years!

School re-opens after the half term break on Monday 5th November as

we start the very busy half term that culminates with our Christmas

celebrations. Remembrance Day will be our focus during the first couple

of weeks and Poppies will be on sale in school.

If your child is due to start school in 2013

(date of birth Sept 2008 – August 2008),

we are holding two sessions for prospective parents on:

Friday 9th November at 9.15am and

Thursday 15th November at 1.30pm

please telephone Mrs Watt in the school office to arrange an

appointment or find out more information about the online applica-

tion process. (830995)

Is Your Property A

Target In The Dark? Darker nights are upon us as the clocks

went back at the end of October. This provides a timely reminder for members

of the public to take some simple steps to

prevent any unwanted visitors into their homes or vehicles. A large proportion of

break-ins are simply down to a burglar or

thief gaining entry to a house or a vehicle that has been left unlocked.

Householders and vehicle owners are encouraged to ensure their

homes and vehicles are kept fully secure at all times.

Community Safety Chief Inspector Fay Tennet said: “We tend to see

an increase in burglaries around this time of year. With the nights closing in, properties that are in darkness offer a temptation to

opportunist criminals, and valuables left on view on car seats provide

an ideal opportunity for a quick smash and grab.

“If you have a timer system attached to lighting in your property,

please make sure you make the necessary adjustments after the

clocks change.

“Doors and windows should be secured at all times, irrespective of

whether or not there is anyone in the property.”

Officers continue to work as part of Operation Guardian through the winter months to focus on tackling burglary and vehicle crime.

Here are some useful crime prevention tips to help you protect your

home and property:

- Keep front and back doors locked at all times – even when you’re

at home - If you are out in the evening make sure you leave a light on and

draw the curtains. If it’s dark before you get home, use timer

switches to turn on the lights

- Light up your front door with dusk to dawn lighting – make sure it's

visible from the street

- Keep keys and valuables out of sight, and reach, from cat flaps, letterboxes, and downstairs doors and windows

- Keep Christmas presents out of sight of passers-by

Page 10: Rothersthorpe Newsletter November 2012

Is Your Property A Target In The Dark Continued

- When recycling, fold up any cardboard boxes that might advertise your Christmas gifts to thieves

- Always lock your car and close windows, even if you are only leav-

ing it for a few moments

- Remove all items from your vehicle when parked. Don’t forget your sat nav, cradle and suction pads and wipe away any marks

Park your car in your garage if you have one and look out for Park

More Sad news Freda Jones of 12 Church Street passed away on the 28th September at the age of 83 just under 6 weeks after the death of her beloved husband, Dennis. Freda was born in August 1929 to Harry and Gini Jarman in Market Harborough, the young-est of their four children. Unfortunately when she was just 17 months old, her mother passed away but she was raised by her father who would go on to marry Gini’s sister, Freda’s auntie, in order to raise the children. Despite this difficult start to her life, Freda en-joyed a loving and happy childhood.

During her school years, she was a keen hockey player, always preferring to be on the pitch than sitting down with her books. This dedication paid off when she started to play for Leicestershire in her teens. After leaving school, Freda became a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Market Harborough. It was during this time, at the age of 17, that she was set up on a blind date with Dennis by her brother, Eric who happened to meet him by chance. They broke up briefly for 2 weeks early on in the relationship but real-ised they couldn’t live without each other and got married in 1949, two years after they first met. Freda would go on to become a loving and dedicated mother to her children, Pat and Richard. When they grew older, she was able to get in to sport once again taking up golf and badminton as well as enjoying many happy skiing holidays. It was in the 80s when Dennis and Freda came to the village - Freda loved village life and was an active W.I. member, an avid Thruppster and also took up Bowls. As well as this, she was a regular at coffee mornings where she would bring her chocolate Smartie cakes and helped out a lot with the church. Unfortunately, in 2009, Freda would have to leave the village to go to Bramp-ton View Care Home due to Dementia which had meant she could no longer stay at home. She became a well-known face at the home due to being one of their longest residents and was always there to give everyone a smile, a whis-tle or a kiss. Dennis and the family were never far away and, in spite of her condition, remained her happy, bubbly self even when she could no longer communicate with words. Although not being actively aware of Dennis’s passing, it appears Freda must have known subconsciously and she passed away suddenly on the 28th Sep-tember. Freda leaves behind Pat and Richard, as well as her grandchildren: Alastair, Fiona, Elliot and Dominic. Fiona MacConnacher

CAN WE HAVE YOUR OLD PHONES

& PRINTER CARTRIDGES - PLEASE!

Just changed a printer cartridge or got your new updated

phone? Stop, dont throw the cartridge in the bin or or push the phone in a drawer, Tools can make a bit of money out of them. All you have to do is wander down Church Street and push them through Val Bridges door, or leave them in a bag on her doorstep. For those of you that dont know Val she lives at number 7, look for the canoe 'moored' up outside! Or, if Berry Close is better for you David Walsh, at number 14 will take them.

We need to collect 50 before we can send them off and get some

money in return. We dont know how much at the moment as this is a new fundraising idea. It would be great if we could get our first 'batch' sent off before Christmas - hint, hint!

(Tools for Self Reliance (Tools for short), in Northampton provides volunteering opportunities for those who are unable to work due to a variety of disabilities, health issues or other disadvantages. At our workshop in Clare Street we refurbish old tools which are then donated, in kit form, to other charities for on-going projects in Africa, Romania or here in Northamptonshire

Neighbourhood Watch It seems that we have had a relatively quiet

month, apart from the naked man wandering

down Milton Road, which I am assured by the

police they have in hand!!

I missed all the excitement as I was away on

holiday, would have been the highlight of my year.

There has been reports of numerous incidents in neighbouring

villages, so as always please be alert.

Any incidents should be reported to the police on 101, and also if you

could let us know on 831020.

Also there are many interesting articles on home safety and

security on the Police website.

Thank you, please have a safe month
