Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

Year 11 Prom

This week, our Year 11 students had their Prom Evening at the Penventon Hotel

and had a truly memorable time. Traditionally, students come to school in an array of fancy dress on Prom day, and this year was no exception with a range of

spectacular, creative and at times comical costumes. They conducted themselves

superbly and had a lot of fun. The school day ended early with a special Leavers Assembly and students returned home to prepare for the evening Prom.

The Prom itself was a very special evening. Our Year 11 are a close-knit year

group and have had a very special journey these past 5 years. They looked terrific

and very grown up in their range of tuxedos and ball gowns. They enjoyed a three course meal before dancing the night away along with the staff.

Well done Year 11 – a terrific evening all round!

It goes without saying that it is now back to the serious revision...

Summer Charity Event

One of our Governors, Sean Pascoe, is organising an ‘It’s a Knockout’ style charity event which will take place on Sunday 1st September at Boscawen park,

Truro. This is a team event and I am hoping we will be able to field both a staff

team and a governors team to compete in it. So if you would like to pit your wits and energies against the school staff, there is a flier on page 10 of this bulletin

with more information. This can also be found on the school website. Do click on the link that follows and we hope you will join us, as well as raise money for a

very worthy cause.

Year 11 Leavers Day 2013 Wednesday saw the arrival of Year 11 Leavers’ Day, when we celebrated the time our lovely year 11’s have had with us and they entertained us with their superb fancy dress! As you can see from the images below the effort made was simply phenome-nal. This is just a small selection, there are many more pictures on the school Facebook page. A final assembly saw a slide show of memories, the entire year group doing the Harlem Shake and musical performances from Tom Redfern, Ben Pridmore and The Village People! The students left at 12:00 to transform themselves for their Leavers Prom….

Year 11 Leavers Day 2013 - The Ball ! .. And what a transformation it was! The rain held off as vintage cars and a fire engine pulled up at the Penventon Hotel and the car park filled up the students dressed in their finery. Everyone was immaculately turned out, the girls looked beautiful in their evening dresses and the boys looked really smart in their suits (and kilt!) With parents, students, staff and the photogra-pher from the West Briton snapping away the students spent about half an hour being photographed before heading into the hotel for their meal and disco.

Year 11 Leavers Day 2013 - The Ball ! Students enjoyed a three course meal of tomato and basil soup or melon, followed by chicken chasseur, vegetable lasagne or steak stilton with all the trimmings, with profiteroles rolls or sherry trifle for dessert. They then danced the night away to music from across the decades with some of the older tunes, such as Macarena and Oops Upside You Head, proving surprisingly pop-ular.! We, as a school, were very proud of them all as we were complimented by the staff and other visitors at the Penventon on their behaviour and conduct. Well done year 11, we look forward to seeing you back in school for your revision sessions!

Plymouth University Maths Conference Before Easter fifteen year 10 students went to Plymouth University for a maths conference. These students were from set two and the visit was intended to show them what mathematics is like at university level and hopefully encourage them to study the subject after they leave RLS.

There were a number of workshops where the students had the chance to see how census data is used, how giant soap bubbles are full of mathematics and trigonometry, and how to balance a body. The latter required one of the students, Siobhan, to lie on a wooden plank on a desk and then the other students found where to play blocks underneath to make sure that, when all but two of the blocks were removed that the

plank would be balanced like a see-saw. The p i c t u r e s h o w s G e o r g i a and a fellow student from C a mb o r ne S c h o o l , under the watchful eye of Plymouth U n i v e r s i t y Lecturer Ted Graham, placing the blocks while a somewhat nervous Siobhan tries to remain completely still. Also pictured is Carlen, who had learnt why Coke cans are shaped the way they are (not just for ease of stacking), trying to balance it on its’ edge. A word of warning, if you try this at home then drink some of the coke first, or else you cannot do it and there will a mess on the kitchen floor. The students all enjoyed the day and thought it was a worthwhile exercise. Mr I Robinson Maths Teacher

Year 8 Gifted and Talented prepare for another super duper Science Detective Day! A specially selected group of year 8 students spent Wednesday 8th May

designing a murder mystery to be solved by visiting members of Richard Lander’s feeder primary schools. The students mapped out their evidence to produce a blood-curdling storyline sure to set those year 6 pulses racing. Richard Lander students will spend the day in character, guiding the Year 6

through the twists and turns of this realistic and highly entertaining forensic science investigation. Year 6 will be arriving at Richard Lander on Wednesday 22nd May. We wish them luck solving this one!

Congratulations! Adam Dower, Ollie Walker and Ollie Pritchard NATIONAL U13 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

T hree RLS students from year 8, Adam Dower, Ollie Walker and Ollie Pritchard travelled to Hereford with the West Cornwall Schools U13 Football team to take part in the National Final. Having beaten Birmingham Schools in the semi-final a couple of months ago they had to face the mighty Liverpool (Merseyside

Schools). After a goalless first half, the West Cornwall boys, resplendent in their Cornish gold and black kit, took the lead with fantastic effort from Joel Al len (Penryn College). They were still ahead as the game en t e red f i ve minutes of “Fergie Time” and as M e r s e y s i d e Schools pressed for an equaliser the Cornwall boys had to clear an effort off the line. They then went straight to the other end and scored a second

goal to kill off their opponents and win the game 2-0 to become NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. Well done to all the team from RLS !! Mr I Robinson Maths Teacher

SPORTS REPORT

Learning Community Swimming Gala 2013 R a m e w i n t h e Community Swimming Gala for the first time !

O n Friday 3rd May around 130 students from Richard Lander School visited Truro School to take part in our annual swimming gala. Once again students were representing their Learning Communities and as with previous years this proved to be an outstanding event, which really ‘show-

cased’ the swimming talent which we have in the school. Prior to the event team captains selected their teams with students being able to swim one individual race and two relays. The races were, 25 and 50m front crawl, 25m backstroke, 25m breastroke, 25m butterfly aswell as a medley and freestyle relay. This is the sixth year that this event has taken place and once again it was a tightly fought event, both individually and in the team competition. All students who took part performed brilliantly for themselves and their communities, with the rivalry between the teams being a very positive and healthy feature. On the day 13 new records were set. A list of the new record holders and their outstanding performances follows this report along with the results table (Continued on next page)

Learning Community Swimming Gala Results – Friday 3rd May, 2013

Learning Community Results 2012/13

(continued from page 2) for Learning Community sports so far this year In the community team event Rame dominated a number of age groups and finally ‘swam out’ winners by 15 points. The other 3 communities were only separated by 3 points with Towan narrowly taking 2nd place. Rame’s

victory was a popular result with staff and congratulations to Mr Gibson and his community on this achievement. Can I offer my congratulations to all the students who took part, they once again represented the school brilliantly. Truro School staff commented on what a great swimming gala our school runs and how well our students behave and perform.

Also thanks to Mr J. Webb, Mr T. Webb, Miss Cain, Ms Lenehan, Ms Abbott and our 6 year 10 student leaders who helped with the running of this event, without these people so many students wouldn’t have had such a positive experience. Mr N. Stoddard PE Team Leader

£677 raised in the RLS Charity Mile

You may remember that back in April, students from years 7-10 took part in a mile run of the school grounds in aid of two charities who have helped RLS students this year. I would like to thank all the students who ran the mile and in particular all those students who contributed £1. When all the donations had been counted we raised a grand total of £677. Two cheques for £338.50 have now been written and sent to Frenchay Hospital i n B r i s t o l and Penha l igon ’ s Friends. Thank you once again. Mr N. Stoddard PE Team Leader

Double Victory for Lander Cricketers Tuesday saw Penrice School make the long trip down from St Austell to take on the year 9 cricket team in our second match of the season. Having beaten Newquay Tretherras the week before the team was feeling upbeat yet a little nervous about our guests as we knew little about their pedigree. Penrice won the toss and elected to bat first and soon found themselves a man down as a fine opening spell of bowling from Redley Flowerdew

earned him a wicket, clean bowling the opening batsman for a second ball duck. He continued to bowl well and took 2 more wickets before captain and Cornwall U14's all-rounder, Luc Lombard, decided to get in on the act. Bowling a quick and tidy spell from the other end he soon got the valuable wicket of the other Penrice opening bat with a fine catch off his own bowling. He soon took two more wickets to leave the visitors in trouble at 23 for 6. Giving the other bowlers a chance to shine saw both Jon Tipple and Wilf Dymond take two wickets each, the latter bowling a very tidy spell to finish the innings and set the team a target of 34 to win. RLS openers Flowerdew and Spencer Wilcock set off very nicely, playing some lovely shots along the ground, combined with some good running, and soon had the score approaching 20 when Wilcock played and missed a well pitched delivery and was bowled. Flowerdew soon followed and the task of winning the game was falling to those who do not always get a chance to bat and this soon showed as wickets tumbled before Toby Blanks steadied the ship and won the game as he was joined by captain Lombard. A good team performance against an u n d e r s t r e n g t h o p p o s i t i o n with excellent bowling by Lombard, Flowerdew, Dymond and Tipple with good knocks from Flowerdew and

Wilcock. A note of praise also goes to Tom Donlon-Smith, who again fielded well for the second game this season with some good throws back from the boundary. Well done Tom! As the year 9's disappeared, some off to play for their local adult sides, we heard the year 7's had won as well. There was a good batting performance from Patrick Wilkins but the stand out moment was Byron Winnan, from TIRb, taking a hat-trick, c l e a n b o w l i n g a l l t h r e e batsmen. Well done Byron, no mean feat in a school game and it shows the value of bowling straight!
