Following in the Footsteps of a 14 year old Soldier on the WW1 Battlefields Trip 2013 By Zak Minett – Year 8

T he Battlefields Trip has been set up to commemorate the centenary of World War 1 and we were one of the first schools to go on it. It was led by History and RE teacher, Mr Brooker and will be offered to Year 8/9 Richard Lander School students once every 2 years. Before the trip all students were given a book called ‘Age 14’ which told a true story of a WW1 hero, John Condon, one of the youngest soldiers, who took his brother’s name so he could join the army at age 12 and fight on the battlefields of WW1. The trip traced the steps of this unforgotten hero visiting places such as Vancouver Corner, Mouse Trap Farm, and Railway Wood. Once the students had arrived in Ypres, they had a small talk from their tour guide Simon, before being shown to their 4 person apartments. Finn Howard said ‘’the dormitories had luxurious quantities of space.’’ They

were then taken on a torch lit memorial walk, led by Simon, which visited an Irish cemetery and included performing the Hakka in front of a New Zealand memorial. After the walk they were treated to a 3 course meal, provided by the staff at the hostel. The next day, after feasting on a buffet breakfast, students witnessed Vancouver Corner, which, mentioned in “Age 14”, was an ideal place for the Germans to fire at the British. They then visited Railway Wood, the grave of John Condon, and were treated to a student re-enactment of the finding of the grave. Pupils also visited the beautiful Hill 60, blown up during the war to disrupt the German front line, a German cemetery called Langemark, and Ypres Cloth Hall, with Flanders Field Museum, a museum devoted to the 1st World War. This was followed by a look around the town square, to buy souvenirs, gifts, and of course, chocolate and then a chicken and chips dinner at a local restaurant. A highlight of the day was the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, where our own students, Dan Lakin and Megan Fox, laid a wreath and Joe Webster read out “Ode of Remembrance" taken from Laurence Binyon's poem, "For the Fallen". The final day was spent touring the

German trenches at Bayernwald and visiting Tyne Cot cemetery, the largest commonwealth cemetery in the world, where I got to speak to David Cameron himself! Ifan Holwegel had something to say on the matter, ‘’ the graves were very historical and a key moment in our trip, David Cameron was also there but I, unfortunately, did not get to speak to him. ” It’s safe to say this trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and is not one to miss. Thank you to all the teachers who helped with the trip. The Battlefields trip to Ypres took place in December 2013. Students worked closely with the BBC to create a documentary about the trip. They interviewed Geert Spillebeen, the author of ‘Age 14’, and took footage of the places they visited. The documentary will be coming to a screen near you soon.

Francovision Fantastique By Courtney Windsor and Kaitlyn Altass – Year 7 Photos by Jacob Moran—Year 8

C lass 7R4 were amazed after being told that they had won Francovision, which is competition where Year 7s sing and dance to their chosen French song. They all had lots of fun and some said they wished every French lesson was like Francovision. After interviewing 7R4 teacher Mrs Hocking, we found out that she was over the moon and equally happy because her other class came 3rd. 7R4, who placed 1st, chose their song because it was popular with French teenagers! We asked her exactly why we do Francovision at Richard Lander School, and her answer was “it is great entertainment and it gives the children insight into French culture, it is also a chance to experience competitions and to learn more French through the judges and the words in the songs.” Her class were

very proud of their performance, they worked very hard to achieve first place. Two girls (Willow Burrows and Rachael Bulford – Forbes) learnt all the words and the rest of the class learnt most of them. She expected both classes to be good, if she had been a judge she said she would have awarded both of her classes joint 1st. 7R4, who represented La Tunisie, won prizes which were Celebrations, Haribo, wrist bands, pencils and a bronze coloured trophy, which got broken five minutes after winning it! The nerves hit Mrs Hocking’s other class but 7R4 were wild with excitement! Maybe that was what made the difference between their scores. After her classes had performed she felt very proud of each and every member of the classes. The whole competition was amazing and all children enjoyed it however nervous they were before their big French show! All the judges spoke fluent French, even though they are English students from Year 10. This

helped the younger students to learn a bit more French throughout the show. It was the first big event in the school for the new students to show their performance skills, and they put in tons of effort. You could tell by the expressions on their faces that they were enjoying every single moment of this epic experience, which they will never forget!

DT Days bring Creative Cookies to Year 8 By Aiden Vincent - Year 8 Photos by Jacob Moran—Year 8

DT Days give Year 8 students a chance to make their own

professional product from start to finish. The challenge was to make their own cookies as well as the packaging; this was to be done in three, one and a half hour workshops.

Our day began with Graphics, the Year 8s had to customise a cardboard sleeve to go on the outside of the cookies and packaging. A template had been created to give the students a helping hand. A name had to be

found for the cookies, some of the names included; Monster Cookies, Flutter Cookies and Craft Cookies.

Once customised, the group set off to their next work shop which was to create the package itself, this would be used to hold the cookies. To make the package the students had to vacuum form high density polystyrene into the shape they required. They could also imprint a design into the package to give it a more personal touch. This could be done by layering paper and placing it on the mould. The vacuum forming then took place and the shape of the paper was inserted

into the package Last but not least it was time to make the cookies! Groups of 3-5 where given cookie dough ingredients and a selection of extras to put in their cookies, from chocolate chips to vanilla essence to apricot. After the cookies where made and a taste test had taken place, it was time for evaluation. The year 8s really enjoyed and learned a lot on DT day and most can’t wait to do it again, but I am not sure if that’s because of their excitement to learn or because of the delicious cookies!

¡Feliz año nuevo! By Lydia Smith

L anguage Club discovered how different countries celebrate New Year. Brazilians throw flowers into the

sea, Venezuelans carry a suitcase around the house if they want to go travelling in the New Year and the Japanese run a race, and the winner has good luck for the rest for the year. Language Club had a go at a Spanish New Year’s celebration, where they eat a grape for every chime of the

clock. We had a video on in the background and we all sat there with our cups full of twelve grapes, waiting patiently as the presenters chattered away in Spanish, then finally, the first chime came. Everyone shoved a grape into their mouths. The second chime came quicker than everyone expected, and the second grape was in. The grapes went in, one after the other, and then it was over. It was ‘New Year.’ Most people had grapes left over. Only two managed to accomplish this New Year tradition, by eating all twelve grapes. It was very interesting discovering how New Year is celebrated around the world. Maybe next year, we can have a go at doing another country’s New Year tradition.

Sports Feature - Sailing By Scarlett Shepherd - Year 9

L ast winter, I crewed for my sister in the UK mirror squad, which consisted of 6 weekends training across the country, which then lead onto us going to the World's in Ireland where we placed 33rd out of 92 (second out of the silver fleet). We also placed 9th at the Nationals in Pembrokeshire. In September I began sailing with another Restronguet sailing club member, Harvey, and won a place in this year's squad; this time as a helm in control of the boat. With two 5ths at the qualifiers, we were selected second for one of the ten squad places available. The squad involves the same commitment as last year, but this year we are hoping to compete in the

National and European Championships at Brixham, and our ultimate goal is to be at the 2015 Worlds which will be held at Theewater Sports Club, South Africa, in January. Dinghy sailing is not an elite sport and is easy and fun - if anyone would like to try dinghy sailing please get in touch. “ Scarlett Shepherd, of Towan – a sailing champ of the future! Well done to Scarlett and indeed her older sister Esme who share a passion for this exciting sport.” Mr C Vaughan—Director of Towan.

Bukomansimbi Build

O ur main partner school in Uganda have recently started an exciting new project, largely funded by the Lander to Uganda campaign. Hoy’s College and Kidsgear in Bukomansimbi are in the process of building a school hall. Presently the schools have no such facilities and students eat their lunch outside or, if it rains, in the

classrooms. As well as being used as a dining hall, the room will also be put to good use for exams, performances and as a meeting room for the local community when required. This would almost certainly not have

been possible without the money

raised by you the students, parents,

staff and wider community of Richard

Lander. Thank you for your efforts and

the money you continue to help us

raise.

Miss K Fewster Uganda News - January

In order to acknowledge the fantastic achievement of our students in Sport in RLS, We are starting a monthly sports profile (both individuals and teams), which will be put both in the Weekly Bulletin, website and on the school digital signage. We will feature both in-school and out-of-school superstars! Ms. J Lewis
