Dear Lander University Class of 2020,

History will view you as one of the 21st century’s most exceptional classes of college graduates. I dare say you are one of the most exceptional classes of all time.

Since the establishment of the world’s first institutions of higher learning a millennium ago, college life has been disrupted by wars, plagues, political unrest and periods of financial decline. But rarely have we seen the far-reaching turmoil that you have endured.

Between the March 13 announcement to close our campus and today – May 13, the day we planned to honor you and your accomplishments during Lander University’s 161st commencement – you have been enveloped by a pandemic that changed college life around the world. A virus named COVID-19 forced the postponement of many important events, including your own graduation ceremony.

It would be easy for us to focus on the losses of this academic season and what we weren’t able to do. Yet, in these eight weeks of social distancing and remote classes, you have continued to find yourselves in the “win column” of life.

High-touch classes in nursing, science labs, education practicums and the arts unexpectedly became high-tech arenas that forced you to switch gears and adapt to new and innovative ways of learning. And adapt you did, with remarkable ingenuity.

You became emboldened to look beyond adversity toward the future, which may be quite different from the one that you imagined for yourself at the beginning of your senior year at Lander.

Instead of throwing in the towel, although tears and frustrations are excused, you looked for solutions to guide you through a pandemic. While you mourned the loss of saying goodbye to friends as you left campus, you worked to stay connected via technology. The connections weren’t as personal, but you made them possible. You bypassed roadblocks and raced ahead toward your goals.

Each person’s challenges were different and difficult. Some of you juggled classes and essential jobs that put you in the path of danger. Some of you lost employment upon which you relied for college expenses. Many of you returned home to families struggling with their own obstacles. But all of you worked each day to succeed.

While the days ahead remain uncertain, I am heartened by the lessons you have learned beyond the virtual classroom.

A student athlete who was denied the opportunity to play in a coveted NCA A basketball tournament said that, rather than this experience being a loss, “the ‘win’ to the pandemic is that it allowed a vast amount of time to focus on my studies.”

One of our nursing majors, who will soon be on the front lines of health care, said, “I have learned to be patient and calm throughout the unknown.”

I smiled at a student pondering what he might say about this period in history: “I will tell my children to make sure that they wash their hands.”

And, an observation from a Lander Presidential Ambassador is especially poignant. “Appreciate all of the small things. You can blink, and everything can change.”

Lander’s faculty, staff and I wish that we could honor you in person today, but for now, we must celebrate your success from afar. However, we are planning a special on-campus commencement ceremony for our Spring 2020 graduates in mid-December of this year, when we can safely and appropriately honor your achievements, your strength and your perseverance to overcome such great adversity. We will share more details on this celebration with you and your families very soon.

Graduates, I applaud each of you. Our nation now has a new generation of leaders who have braved formidable challenges, and did so with unsurpassed intelligence and commitment.

I will be forever inspired by you as individuals and as the collective Class of 2020. You are true champions in the history of Lander University.

Congratulations,

2020
