WEDNESDAY 3RD Governors Meeting—Personnel

Dear Parents, Congratulations this week to the U14 Girls’ football team, which won the county cup final this week, beating Budehaven Community College 2-0. It was a very tight game, played at a very high skill level. The difference between the 2 sides was evident though, in the level of teamwork and fitness. This is a marvellous achievement for our Key Stage 3 girls, who have done so well at representative level this year in sport. Well done also, to our Young Enterprise teams which received numerous awards in the annual Cornwall Innovation Awards. 21 teams took part and both our teams made the top 8 and made confident presentations to 250 Cornish business guests. ‘Rocky and Co’ came third overall. They also won Best Financially Managed Company, came runners-up in Best Use of ICT, and runners-up in Best Presentation awards categories. Knotbox won the Best Use of Social Media category and were runners up in Best Business Report category, with Maggie Skyes winning the Individual Special Achievement Award. Mrs Ford also had the honour of winning an award for the Best Centre Lead category. Well done to all students who took part, and of course, to Mrs Ford, for all her support for Young Enterprise at Richard Lander School. Steve Mulcahy Headteacher

T he final training for the 2015 Ten Tors Challenge took place last weekend. The Ten Tors Challenge is organised by the Army from Okehampton Camp with support from the Royal Navy (with manpower and helicopters), the Royal Air Force and the Dartmoor Rescue Group: The Ten Tors Challenge takes place annually in May and is limited to 2,400 individuals – four hundred teams of six teenagers. The teams, depending on age, face hikes of 35, 45 or 55 miles visiting ten nominated tors over two days. The teams must be self-sufficient, carrying all that they need to complete their route safely despite the terrain and the weather. The latter can be very changeable and at times quite extreme, and success or failure can depend very much on the extent to which a team has trained for all eventualities.

Back in November we started off with over 20 enthusiastic year 10 students keen to tackle the 35 mile challenge. After three day walks and six weekend walks with wild camping on the moor the numbers have dropped to a determined few.

These students have been through gales and non-stop rain, freezing nights and hail to complete the training walks sometimes through knee high mud.

Uniform: Information for Parents

F rom September 2015, there will be a minor change to the school uniform regulations and this concerns our school trousers. The past couple of years has seen too many occasions where students - both boys and girls, have worn ‘fashion’ trousers which do not comply with the school uniform regulations. Indeed, parents have often informed us that it is difficult to buy school regulation trousers from the various retail outlets in Truro. Therefore, in the interests of clarity and partnership working with parents and our school uniform retailer Trevails, we have sourced 2 pairs of trousers for both boys and girls which will be the only school trouser we will ask parents to purchase from September 2015. These will have a discreet and smart RLS logo on them for easy identification, be good quality and an equivalent price to other school trouser retailers. The trousers will be available from Trevails well ahead of the new academic year to ensure ease of purchase. Our expectation is that by September 2016 all school trousers worn by students will be RLS branded trousers. The girl’s trousers are pictured above. Dealing with uniform issues detracts from the process of teaching and learning and this should mean no parent will have any issue in being able to source the correct uniform trousers for their children. The Student Council have also requested that the school supply a burgundy RLS jumper / cardigan to replace the zip-up top, which is considered a little outdated. We have worked with Trevails to implement this and the new jumper / cardigan is available now - pictured above. Cardigans and jumpers are not compulsory for students who can continue to wear their existing zip tops if they choose to. If any parent would like to express a view regarding this, please do so by writing to Mr Holloway through the Student Support email address: [email protected]

Year 10 Geography Field Trip

P art of the Year 10 Geography

cohort visited Falmouth a few weeks ago, on 16th April. Students were collecting data for their Controlled Assessment and therefore were carrying out various methods around the town to be

able to investigate tourism in a coastal resort. We worked our way from the Rugby ground, down to the town, along to the Maritime Museum where we could enjoy a picnic lunch in the sunshine. In the afternoon we headed over towards the sea front before enjoying the views from Gylly beach and heading back to school. Students represented the school in a delightful fashion and we are now busy making sense of our data to be able to report back on the impacts of tourism in Falmouth. Many Year 10s reported that they had seen Falmouth through a more Geographical lens and we are very impressed by students’ enthusiasm and hard work.

Year 11 can look forward to a wide range of stress relieving activities next week during the Stress Less Fest, which is being organised by Mrs Knight. The aim is to give students ideas on how to cope with stress in the run up to their GCSE exams. All activities are free and, furthermore, raffle entries are given for every activity a student takes part in. There are some fantastic prizes on offer which have been donated by local businesses and include a cream tea for 2 at the Penventon Hotel, lunch for 2 at the Penventon Hotel, things to grow and things to cuddly from Patch and Acre (Cornwall Farmers), novels from Waterstones, bread and pastries from Baker Tom, an ‘Inspirational Nail’ treatment, and a massage or ‘cut and blow dry’ at Calmante, Truro. Thank you all so much for donating!

Thursday 7th May - Mock Election

N ext Thursday we will be holding a mock election in school. Every student will be given a ‘poll card’ during registration. They will take this to one of the 4 polling

stations located around the school, where they will swap it for a ‘ballot paper’ and have the opportunity to vote Labour, Conservative, Green, Liberal Democrat or UKIP. We have a team of student volunteers who will manage the polling station and some of our top set mathematicians will collate the

data into pie charts.

Tickets are available from Student Reception for £12.50 including BBQ, Chocolate Fountain, Bouncy Castle, Disco and Fun Casino.
