Francovision 2016

A t the end of the autumn term, all Year 7 French classes compete in Francovision, which is Richard Lander School’s version of the Eurovision Song Contest, where each class performs a dance routine to a famous French song or translation. This competition is always highly entertaining and winning is taken very seriously. With Mrs Hocking victorious in 2013, 2014 and 2015 the other French teachers were determined she would not win again! 4 Year 10 students were chosen as judges. Points awarded were out of 5 and each judge marked on both the ‘spectacle’ (show) and ‘qualité vocale’ (singing quality), with all scores and comments being delivered in French. The enthusiasm and considerable talent of our current Year 7 meant that the standard of performance

was very high and it came down to just one point between first and second place. Mrs Shine’s 7L1P ‘La Tunisie’ class were looking like certain winners with a score of 39/40 until the final act took to the stage. Ms Garford’s 7R1P class were not intimidated by going last, they represented Le Gabon and sang ‘Toutes Les Nuits’ by Colonel Reyel, enhancing audiences experience with acrobatics and cahon drumming. Their performance wowed the judges so much they awarded an incredibly rare full marks—an unbeatable 40 points.

Year 10 - Cornwall School Rugby Cup Final Reports by Josh Anderson - Team Captain

O n Thursday 6th of December we played Penrice Academy in the County Cup Final. Play commenced at 2:30pm at Truro RFC. The game was very hard fought in the first half with both teams demonstrating good defence. Lander had some good possession but failed to create many clear cut scoring opportunities due to some silly unforced handling errors. There was one occasion when we came right up to Penrice’s line and passed the ball out to the corner where Fred Snell crossed over. Unfortunately the try was disallowed due to the pass being forward. With Lander pushing Penrice’s pack back at every scrum we began to retain the ball well once again but to no avail due to

some bad luck or bad handling! Penrice were awarded a penalty 10 metres in front of the halfway and with this play being the last of the first half they decided to go for the posts. The kick came up short and Lander cleared to the touch line for half time. With Lander heads down Mr. Williamson got us in for a team talk. We started the second half booming with a clever inside pass from Louis Rudin for Lewis Richards to score under the posts. The conversion added by Josh Anderson. From this point on we knew something special could happen and we started to turn the game around. With further tries from Frank Holmes and Cameron Bishop (2), and one conversion added by Harry Lampier, the score was 24-0. However, Penrice began to start playing some good rugby and with quick passing their winger crossed in the corner with the conversion just shy of the posts. This meant the score was 24-5 with

15 minutes to go. Lander worked hard both in defence and attack for the last stages of the match and Cameron Bishop crossed for his hat-trick in the final play of the match. At the final whistle the score was 29-5 to Lander. Our un-beaten run in Cornwall continues going into our 5th and final year. Thanks to Mr. Williamson and all our supporters. We now look to our Natwest Plate run where we play Canford at home in mid January.

Year 10 Rugby Team reach last 16 in the country!

O n Thursday 1st of December we took to the field to face Dauntsey’s School from Devizes, Wiltshire. Having won our last match convincingly against Truro School, there was a positive atmosphere within the team which we brought into the match. There seemed to be a vibe of hunger and will to win from everyone, and it

was evident throughout the warm up, and during the match, how much the team wanted to get a good result. We started brilliantly with a wonderful solo try from full back Sam Gapp. Two minutes in, we were 7-0 up and it was clear that Dauntsey’s heads were down.

With a further four tries by Connor Dann, Louis Rudin and Frank Holmes (2) the score was 31-0 by the break. The second half started slowly but mid-way through, Cameron Bishop picked a great hole to carve through the defence and score to make the score 38-0 with just less than 20 minutes to go. Continued domination by the Lander pack meant that the backs could have quick ball to play, with strong runs from Harry Lampier, Connor Dann and Kieran Brand,

that took us right up to Dauntsey’s line. Lewis Richards ran a strong hard straight line, showed good power and scored a well deserved try. Dauntsey’s had a late flourish, and scored two well earned tries and one conversion. With Josh Anderson adding five conversions along the way, the final score at the whistle was 45-12. It was a brilliant performance from the

whole team and certainly one of our best performances ever!

A huge thanks to Mr Williamson and all the parents that supported us. We are now in the last 16 teams in the country, and we have Canford School in the next round, at home again.

Badminton Competition

L ast half term the school sent four KS4 teams to the Penryn Schools Sports Partnership Badminton tournament at Truro School. Time constraints and a large number of entries from the local schools forced the tournament to be shorter than in recent years, with timed games being played. This did not suit us and just a few extra seconds may have given us a chance to make the finals but sadly we did not qualify this time. The KS4 Boys A team was led by the County number one player, Harry Dyer, and they beat Helston, drew with Camborne and

unfortunately lost the crucial final match against Truro School A by 3 games to 2. The boys B team fought valiantly against strong opposition and managed to win a few games but ultimately not enough to qualify. The KS4 girls A team won 2 out of their matches, whilst the B team won 1 out of 3. Both had to play very strong Truro teams who defeated us comfortably to move into the final. All those who played were a credit to the school with most of the students making their final appearance for the school as they leave us in the Summer. We hope to enter again next and should be able to take teams from both key stages next time around.

Community Badminton

W ith the dark evenings still around and Christmas over, why not come along to the school and play in our Community Badminton club?

The club is run on a social basis with players of all abilities participating. Help is available for those new to the game and our regular players will happily team up and play some friendly doubles games with you. All the equipment is provided, just come along in your sports gear and trainers and get started. Everyone is welcome, we have a number of parents and their children playing as well as current and former students, though there is no requirement to be connected to the school in any way. The cost is £1.50 per hour and you can stay for one or two hours; the choice is yours. The sessions are run by Mr Bridger and Mr Robinson, two teachers at the school. They are held every Wednesday from 7 to 9pm and Friday from 6 to 8pm in the School Sports Hall. If you need any further information please email Mr Robinson at the school: [email protected]


Football Fundraiser for Finley

M any thanks to all those students who took part in our two evenings of football and made a £1 donation on these evenings. In total we raised £52 and this has been given to year 8 student Finley Stribley. Finley is a very talented cricketer who has been given the opportunity to visit South Africa as part of the Cornwall Schools U13 Cricket team. This will allow him to play cricket matches in Johannesburg and Cape

Town. This tour takes place in February and costs each participant £1950. Finley has worked really hard to raise money with the highlight being a cycle from Okehampton to Lands End raising a massive £1000. Although our £52 contribution is a much smaller amount, every little helps and I would like to thank everyone for their £1 contributions. We wish Finley a great trip and every success with his future playing cricket, both inside and outside of school. Mr Stoddard PE Team

Katie and Mr Gell - Shorn to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust

I n December. Katie Edwards (Year 9) valiantly decided to have her long golden locks cut off to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust. She chose 3 of her favourite teachers to do the honours - Mr Gell, Mr Crawley and Mrs Martin who chopped off her plaits in front of a delighted audience of students. Following this Mr Gell decided to match Katie’s bravery and allow her to publically shave his head, on the condition that the Richard Lander School community could raise a further £100 for the charity. Conditions fulfilled, Katie creatively shaved a star into Mr Gell’s head and between them they raised a massive £500 for the charity. Well done to you both!!

Creative Arts Trip to London Art in London

O n the 2nd December we arrived at school at 4.45am so that we could get a good start on our journey. Everyone arrived prepared with pillows and snacks and we had a good journey up to London. It was great to see the sights as we travelled through the city. Our first stop, the Tate Britain , is the home of British Art and has an impressive collection spanning from 1500 to the present day. The Tate is currently showing the Turner prize nominees. The prize is awarded annually, to an artist under fifty, born, living or working in Britain, for an outstanding exhibition or public presentation of their work anywhere in the world in the previous year. The four shortlisted artists who had their work exhibited are Michael Dean, Anthea Hamilton, Helen Marten and Josephine Pryde. The exhibition was really diverse and led to some interesting discussions amongst the students. Since our return Helen Marten has been announced the winner. We also had time to look at some of the work displayed in the permanent collection and saw works by Anish Kapoor, Francis Bacon, Turner and David Hockney. It was an excellent introduction to British Art as the gallery houses a real range of works. We then took the Tate boat down the river and saw many famous buildings and sights along the way such as St Pauls Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge. It gave us a

great vantage point to see the architecture from the river. We then went to the Tate Modern and students were able to experience the current work that is on display in the turbine hall as well as the huge collection of modern art that the Tate Modern houses. It was also exciting to be able to see the new extension that has been added and all the new work that is on display there. It was good that students were able to experience the wide variety of work that is on display . They were able to see paintings, sculptures, photography and prints. Many of the works on display allowed for great talking points and it was good to see and hear students discussing the pieces and sharing their opinions. After our art experiences we walked from the Tate modern to Covent Garden which was lovely and allowed us to soak up the Christmas atmosphere. We met with the Drama students in time to have a look around the area and then go to the theatre for the show. It was a great day and everyone really enjoyed the galleries and seeing art in

different contexts.

Drama in London

T he GCSE drama group were up bright and early to catch the bus to London on Friday morning. Ms Charleston would have been even earlier if the clutch hadn’t gone on her car! So at 5am, a little bleary around the edges, we set off on our adventure. The students were booked to take part in a drama workshop at Pineapple Studios. We eagerly looked out for celebrities and apparently “The woman from Coronation Street” was spotted. We were totally star struck. The theatre company Frantic Assembly choreographed the movement for the show we were going to see in the evening and our two hour bespoke workshop focused on physical theatre a

performance style used by Frantic Assembly. The workshop was led by Adam from Theatre Workout. The students thoroughly enjoyed it and took away several ideas for their Unit 3 performance project. We had a quick photo opportunity at Trafalgar Square with fountains, lions and the National Gallery as a back drop and then we walked

back to Covent Garden to meet up with the Art students for food and shopping. Suitably refreshed we all made our way to see “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time“ at the Gielgud theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. Based on the Mark Haddon novel, this stage adaptation was a truly spectacular show with an engaging story and stunning technical elements. As we made our way home Jayda and Emily were still wide awake at 3am, chatting excitedly about the show. Moments like this make it all worth it. Well done Year 11 - it was a pleasure being up with you for 26 hours and thank you to all the parents for being awake to collect your children so promptly.

Truro Combined Schools Art Project

W ith the annual Truro Schools Collaborative Project gathering pace for the 2017 public exhibition in Truro’s Lemon Street Gallery, year 8 students from Richard Lander School have once again joined other students from the Truro area to work on exhibits. This year’s workshops started with a visit to John Howard’s print studio in Penryn. The second in the series of workshops saw students Amelie Coombes, Theo Dunford and Caitlin Shaw having the chance to work with Adrian Holmes at a workshop hosted by Truro High School. Adrian is a local artist with global influences. He is now based in Redruth’s Krowji studios but much of his training took place as an apprentice to a Japanese print maker and he retains close ties with the country and its aesthetic

tradition. His work combines classic painting and wood block print making skills to produce very modern representations of our environment. The students had a chance to learn a range of skills from Adrian before applying these to their own interpretations of Cornish scenes. Under Adrian’s guidance Amelie, Theo and Caitlin all worked with students from the other schools in the Truro area to create large scale paintings. It was a great opportunity for the students to learn new skills under the watchful eye of a fantastic and inspiring tutor and, equally, a challenge to work at such a large scale. Adrian then took the students through the process of print making to combine these with the paintings. The final pieces were great examples of modern combinations of classic techniques to create something entirely new; they were also a great opportunity for the students to meet, work with, and make new friends from the Truro area. Next year’s exhibition will be called, ‘You Are Here’ and will look

at contemporary art in Cornwall. Adrian’s work with the students will be unveiled at the Exhibition in March as well as a piece created by the teachers from the schools who had a chance to join in with the collaborative spirit of the workshop and exhibition. We look forward to seeing you in March 2017.

Methodist Church Display

W e were asked some time ago by the Methodist Church to be involved in decorating one of the church windows. The idea was to create something to illustrate a well known Christmas carol . We were given ‘In the bleak mid– winter’ and Mr Conrad and some students from years 7-9 who have been attending KS3 art club every week began to come up with ideas for how the carol could be represented. They decided to create something 3D and set about making some beautiful houses that represented the winter theme. It took quite some time to cut all the pieces that put the constructions together. Trees and a grass foreground really set the scene. Ms Downing made a fantastic textile back drop which features lyrics from the carol. When we went to set it up at the church it looked fantastic and really effective on the window sill. Well done to all the students from Art Club who helped.


How to Revise for your GCSEs - Parent Information Evening

O n Thursday 5th January, we held a parent information evening to advise on the most effective ways to study for GCSEs. The evening was organised by the Mathematics and English departments, supported by Mrs Knight and Rob Dowling who work

on student well-being throughout the year to ensure that unmanageable stress is avoided. Japanese Club

Akemashite omeditou gozaimasu Happy New Year from Japanese Club! Our first club meeting of the New Year was a resounding success. Not only did we get sent lots of wonderful matcha (green tea) powder from Japan, we also got origami paper, Japanese chocolates and a very cute ‘totoro’ New Year’s decoration! Our language lesson revisited some of last year’s work including the use of the verb ‘dekiru’ – to be able to. We also learnt the Japanese numbers and how to ask: ‘How old are you?’ (Nan sai desu ka)

Finally, Koge Pan’s adventures got a bit obscure however; he did introduce us to ‘charcoal pan’ who had been in the oven for three hours!

Little Imaginations - A Flying Start to Young Enterprise!

L ittle Imaginations have made an outstanding start to their year of Young Enterprise. With the YE Cornwall Christmas Trade Fair fast approaching, the team were keen to generate as much publicity as possible and to test prototypes of their fledgling product—The Cardboard Castle. When 45 students from Bosvigo School visited for a Christmas party, Little Imaginations jumped on the opportunity and invited Radio Cornwall in to interview them at the event. The show was aired on the ‘Sunday Breakfast with Donna Birrell’ show and Joe Barber and Nesta Griffiths did an excellent job of explaining the ethos and ambitions of their company. The primary students really enjoyed personalising the castle and playing in it so the team went to the trade fair the following Saturday positive and well-prepared. Their hard work was rewarded by Young Enterprise Cornwall who chose Little Imaginations as Runner-up Company, with the 2nd most innovative product and 2nd best marketing campaign. Their customer service and ability to engage with the general public was rewarded with the Mystery Shopper Award!

Rotary Young Chef Area Final

O n Thursday 1st December, Richard Lander School hosted the area final of the Rotary Young Chef Competition. Twelve students from all over Cornwall took part and all were asked to cook a three course meal for two covers. Richard Lander School had two competitors, Scarlett Berry and Lizzie Harverson. The competition was organised by Mollie Foster from the Truro Boscawen Rotary Club and she managed to bring a whole group of volunteers with her to wash up for the

twelve students. Judges for the competition were Sanjay Kumar and Philip Oakes who is a lecturer at Camborne College. The competitors worked really well and all the students managed to produce all three courses in the two hours they had. The two judges were impressed with the skills they demonstrated and the standard of food. Sadly neither Scarlett nor Lizzie made the top three but they did extremely well. The

presentation of Scarlett’s dishes was praised as well as her high excellent flavours. Lizzie’s dishes were also highly commended and the judges were amazed at both girl’s knowledge and skill. A brilliant effort by both girls, well done!

Year 7 History Castle Competition 2016

C ongratulations to all of Year 7 who took part in the annual Medieval model castle competition. The standard of entries this year continued to be exceptionally high and the judges were faced with a very difficult decision with over thirty entries reaching this year’s final. Special congratulations go to Dillon Antunes, Amber Atkins, and Loren Pound who were the three overall winners this year. Young Photographer 2017

I t’s time to get your cameras out

and explore beautiful wintery

Cornwall looking for inspiration!

The Rotary are once again running

their Young Photographer

competition. This is a 3 stage

competition with each round being

judged by professional

photographers and there are great

prizes to be won. Richard Lander

School has a great history of

success in entering this

competition, with Alfie Martin

winning the district round in his

age group last year along with

other notable finalists.

Task:

To produce a portfolio of three

photographs based upon the

theme, ‘Reflection’ in colour or

black and white on photographic

paper. Prints are to be submitted

separately. Each print, including

any mount should be no larger

than A4 size. Mobile Phones may

be used but please take the photo

in the highest resolution possible

and be wary of any filters which

may reduce this. Similarly when

emailing a photo make sure you

are sending it in the largest format

possible.

If you are in any doubt, Miss

Wright is more than happy to help.

Pop in to the DT Base at lunchtime

or during tutor time. She will also

your images for you if you send her

a jpeg by 25th January at the

latest. District competition winners

will be asked for a digital copy of

their photographs in jpg format

and ideally 5MB for an A4 sized

print.

In addition, each entrant should

provide a brief sentence of what

each photograph represents in

relation to the theme and also

need to fill in an entry form -

available from the DT Base or

Creative Arts Base.

Please Note: Photographs which

include people under 18 years old

must be accompanied by written

permission from the parent,

guardian or carer of the person

photographed.

Last year the Rotary produced a

calendar featuring the best entries

from 2016. We were very proud

that 7 of the images used were

from Richard Lander School

students. We still have a few of

these calendars left over and they

are available for £5 from the DT

base or from Main Reception. All

proceeds go to Cornwall Air

Ambulance and End Polio Now.

Christmas at Richard

Lander School

Although it all seems like a long

time ago now, at the end of last

term everyone was very excited

about Christmas!

The Music department led the

celebrations with 2 superb

concerts. Our formal carol service

was held in Truro Methodist

Church and included performances

from Terpsichore, the school

recorder group, and our 4

wonderful choirs - The Chamber

Choir, the whole school choir,

Changing Voices and our Year 7

Choir. They all delighted an

audience of family members and

staff and, with the congregation

contributing by singing well know

carols between performances,

everyone left the church reminded

of the things that we love about

Christmas.

This event was followed by an

informal carol service held in

school which featured solo

performances from Ella

Hadfield, Amy Kimpton, Adam

Hawkes and Ben Keast, along with

ensemble performances from the

RLS Jazz Band, world music

ensembles including Samba,

Djembe and Gamelan

performances, the Woodwind

Group and Trio, Changing Voices,

the School Production Band,

Taverner Choir, the Chamber Choir,

RLS String Group the Year 7 Choir!!

To add to this outstanding display

of talent the audience were invited

to participate in sing-a-long carols

and a finale performance of ‘I wish

it could be Christmas everyday!’

worked incredibly hard to enthuse

and support students of all musical

interests last term and the results

of this were seen in these

wonderful events.

‘Changing Voices’ - our all male

choir - were particularly busy over

the festive period, as they also

spent Tuesday 13th December,

visiting Amberley House

Residential Home to perform

Christmas songs to the residents

there. They were incredibly well

received and brought smiles to all

the resident’s faces.

Along with tutor group parties, the

final day of the Autumn term saw a

superb display of talent during

Year 11 Entertainment. It was

varied and surprising and many

long term staff agreed it was the

best one we have ever seen. Also,

in the final week, Mrs Knight’s

Child Development students

hosted a Christmas party for 2

Reception classes from Bosvigo

School. This provided an

opportunity for our students to

observe the younger children as

they attempted festive activities

and to try out healthy party food

recipes.

Dear Parents / Carers, As we move towards the winter months, and mindful of the potential for heavy snowfall to close the school whilst it is in session, please find attached a summary of the school’s protocol for emergency closure of the school. This document will also be filed on the school website (follow the ‘Parent’ then ‘Policies’ links). In such a circumstance, the school will endeavour to do what it can to stay open; however, our first priority is always to maintain the health and safety of our students and staff. Sending this document to parents / carers in advance of any adverse weather conditions keeps all of us in the loop regarding process and communication. Kind regards, Steve Mulcahy Headteacher

Procedure for Emergency School Closure This protocol is intended to support parents with regard to Richard Lander School emergency school closure procedures (for example in adverse weather conditions, such as heavy snow.) The protocol can only be effective if the school has up to date contact telephone numbers for parents. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that the school is informed when contact telephone numbers change. At all points, the welfare and safety of students and staff is our key concern. If adverse weather affects the school while it is in session, the following protocol will be put in place. The Headteacher will contact the Local Authority with regard to closure of the school. The Local Authority

will communicate this to the local radio stations, as per the county protocol. The school will arrange for the regular service buses to collect students from school at the earliest

opportunity. Students will be called to their tutor bases, under the direction of their tutors. Students will then be advised to call their parents via their mobile phones. Once students have made this

telephone connection, their tutor or other supporting member of staff will speak directly to parents. Students who do not have a mobile phone will be directed to one of the admin bases in school, where a

member of the admin team will make contact with parents via one of their office phones. Via this phone call, parents will be requested to grant permission for their children to leave school, either

by their regular service bus, public bus, by foot or under the escort of another student’s parent. Students will not be given permission to leave the school if parents have not spoken directly to a member

of staff via this telephone conversation. The tutor will then sign the student’s planner to indicate that this permission has been granted. Under the direction of senior staff, students will be released from their tutor bases in an orderly manner,

and will leave via the Student Reception exit. They will show their signed planner to a member of staff on exit, to indicate that parental permission has been granted.

Parents who collect their children directly from school can do so from the school’s main reception. Senior staff will remain in school until all students have been granted safe passage home. The school will issue further information about whether the school will remain closed, partly open or open fully, on a daily basis. Any announcement will be posted on the school website by 7am daily. Parents should also tune in to local radio stations, which will be informed by the Local Authority of ongoing school closure.
