ThisseasonisspecialbutthehorsesdontknowWevegotworktodobeforewecangoWefinishthechoresandheadoninsideTogetreadyfordinnerandourownyuletide

PresidentsHorseChatItsalmostChristmas!Thetreeshavelosttheirleavesandthecoldwinterwindshavebeguntoblow.Wesaw
ourfirstsnowoftheseasontwoMondaysago.ItwassocoldallweekthatthepopcornsnowlayfrozenonourdeckuntilthafollowingThursdayafternoon.Thefountainswerefrozensolid.Istoodonthedeckandlookedabout.Ithoughtaboutwhatwinterrepresents.Somethinkofitastheendofsomanythings.Iliketothinkofitasatimetorest,reflectandatimefornewbeginnings.Itisatimetogetbackintouchwithfriendsandlovedonesandatimetomakenewplans.
ThisismylastmonthasyourRedwoodUnitPresident.Thisismylastmonthtosharemythoughtswithyou.Ithasbeenquajourney.
Wevehadsomegoodtimes,badtimesandevensomesadtimes.ButImgladItookthejourneywithyou.IlearnedlotasyourPresident.Itisabigresponsibility.Mostofyouweresupportiveandcaringandhelpedmealongthewaywithyouencouragementandideas,withyourkindwordsandwillingnesstohelpandparticipate.NoitwasntalwaysapleasantjournButthegoodbyfarovershadowedthebad.IamproudtosayIworkedhardforwhateverwasinthebestinterestoftheunit.Thatwasalwaysmymainconcernandtohelptheunittogrowandlearn.
Ihavebeeninthisunitsince1997andneverhadmuchopportunitytoactuallylearnsomeoftheskillsofpackinganDutch-ovencooking,amongotherthings,becauseIwasalwayssobusytakingcareofsomethingateachevent.ButwhenwestartedthePRCommittee,withthehelpofJacqueMurphyandEricaCanevarileadingthecommittee,wefoundnewwayto
helpouroldandnewmemberslearnandtakeupsomeoftheveryskillsthatwetalkaboutusinginthewilderness.Westarteunittrainingsothatmemberscouldhavehandsontraining,makingthemmorevaluableinteachingnewmembers.IveseenmorenewpeoplelearningtopackandusingthewildernessskillsthanIhadeverseensinceIjoinedourunit.Foryearsitwasjustaselectfewwhoknewtheseskillsandnowmorearelearningandusingthem.Itsveryexcitingtosee.Ihopetheunitstaonthispathtolearningandperfectingtheseskills,andIhopetheyworktogethertoteachtheGentleUseandLeaveNoTramethodsthatarethecoreoftheBackCountryHorseman.Teachingourmembersfirstisthebeststeptoteachingothers.IdidnothaveanyideawhattheBCHCwaswaybackin1997,butTomAcordkeptinvitingAlbertandmetocometoameeting.TomdidntgiveupandoncewecameandheardtheMissionStatementoftheBCHCIwashooked.Weweresoimpressedinwhattheystoodforthatwejoined.
Thepast12yearsIhavebeengrowingwiththisunit.Iveseenitsstrongpointsanditsweakpoints.Onelastthough
Idliketoleavewithyouistobeopen-mindedandnotbeafraidofchange.Lifeisfullofchanges.Theunitneedschangefromtimetotimetokeepitinterestingandalive.Someofthelong-timemembersareafraidofchangeanddonotreadilywelcomthenewmembers.Treateachotherwithkindness.Dontbesorigidthatyoudrivethenewmembersaway.Showyourenthusiasmforwhattheunitstandsforandgetthemsoexcitedandfiredupthattheywillwanttobeapartoftheunitforalifetime.DolikeTomAcorddid,hegotmefiredup!!!Donttreatthenewlikeoutsiders.Treatthemwithrespectandwelcothemintothe
family.Keepthefiresburning.
Andwhenyouride,ridewiththewind!Hearthewindswhispersandfeelyourheartsoarwiththewind.Feeltheeneandexcitementandbringitbacktoyourunit.RidewithmeonelasttimeintotheNewYear.Thankyouformanywonderfuridesandmanywonderfulmemoriestogether.
