    Horsesarenaturalgrazers.Theywouldlikenothingbetterthantostandaroundthepasture,alternatinggrazingannapping,24/7.It'swhattheyareborntodo.Sointhewintermonthswhengrazingisn'tanoption,it'snowondertheygetalittleover-excitedandrambunctiousatfeedingtime.Butitdoesn'thavetogetoutofcontrol.

    Defendingyourpersonalspaceatfeedingtime,anddemandingyourhorsesarerespectful,issimplyamatteofsafety.Ifyou'veevercarriedagrainbucketorabaleofhayintoapastureandfoundyourselfinthemiddleof8horsesfightingoverthefoodyouknowwhatI'mtalkingabout.Teachingyourhorsestorespectyourspaceatfeedtimeisn'tdifficult,andcouldsaveyouatriptotheemergencyroom.

    Inmypastureandbarnourhorsesarenotallowedtogetwithin4feetofmewhenI'mcarryinghayorgrainAnd,theymuststandatthebackoftheirstallsbeforeI'llputgrainintheirbuckets.It'sjustthatsimple-theywantfood,theyneedtobackoff.So,howdoIgetthemtocooperate?

    Ineverenterthepasturewithfoodwithouthavingatrainingstickandstring.Asthehorsesapproachme,Iholdupthestickupintheair.Theyhavethechoiceatthatpointtostayoutofstrikingdistanceorgettagged.Islapthegroundinfrontofthembeforetheyentermyspacetogivethemanextrawarning.Iftheycontinueintomyspatheygettagged.Afterseveraldaysofbeingconsistentwiththeconsequenceofenteringintoyourspace,mosthorswillgettheideaandstandbackuntilyougetoutoftheway.

    Iuseasimilartechniquewhengrainingmyhorsesintheirstalls.Iaskthemtogotothebackofthestallanddon'tputthegrainintheirbucketsuntiltheyarestandingquietlyinthebackofthestall.Thistakespatience.Youhavetobeconsistentandnotallowyourhorsetorushthegrainbucketwhileyouarepouringinthegrain.Bewillintostop,stepbackandaskthemtogotothebackofthestalluntiltheycanstandquietly.Ifyou'reconsistentfor4-5days,soonyourhorseswillgothebackofthestallassoonastheyseeyoucoming.

    Feedingtimeatourfarmhasgonefrom'everymanforhimself'toacontrolled,safeevent.Mostofthetime,ourhorsesdon'tevenattempttoapproachtheirhayorgrainuntilwewalkaway.Takethetimetoteachyourhorsesrespectandpolitenessatfeedingtime-you'llbesogladyoudid.
