    trainers.Unfortunatelyinthemidstoffrustrationoranger,manyhandlerswillmakesomefatalmistakesthat

    exasperatetheproblemratherthanlessenit.

    Thereisnodenyingthatdealingwithabarnsourhorsecanbeataxingexperience,buton

    youdecidetoengageinthe"battleofwills"it'simportantthatyoufollowthroughuntiltheend.Thisdoesnotmeaplacingyourselfinapositionofdanger;ifyourhorseisbuckingandrearingontheroadsidebecausehedoesnotwtorideawayfromthebarn,donotpotentiallyhurtyourselforthehorsebyforcingtheride.Bythesametokendonotjustgiveupandreturnthehorsetohisstall,becausethat'sexactlywhathewantedandifwinsyoucanrestassuredthatyournext"war"willbeallthatmuchmoredifficult.Takeyourhorseintoaridingareorroundpenandworkhimhard.ByhardIdonotmeanallowingangertofuelyouractionsandtherebyrunningthhorseragged;Imeangivehimagoodworkoutsothatnexttimehemightdecidethetrailridewasmoredesirableafterall.It'snevergoodtoloseabattlewithahorsesincetheyalwaysbecomeprogressivelyworse,butintheabovecaseyoushowedthehorsethatalthoughyoulosttheinitialbattle,ultimatelyyouwonthewar.Don'twavethewhiteflagthmomentyouexperienceyourfirstsetback.

    RacingHome Oneoftheinitialsymptomsofabarnsourhorseisahorsethatspeedsupthepaceashenearsthebarnonthejourneyhome.Mostofthetimethehorsedoesthisofhisownaccordsincehe'ssimplyexcitedabout

    returninghome,butsometimesariderwillactuallycanterthehorsedownthefinalstretchforfun.Ifonlythatrideknewhowfoolhardysuchanactionwas!Itisimportantthatyoualwaystakethefinalstretchhomeataleisurelywalk.Notonlyisthisbetterforthehorse'shealth(theyshouldhaveacooldownperiodjustashumanathletes),itwillletthehorseknowthatyouareinfullcontrolatalltimes.Ifyouarereturningatamediumwalkandyourhorsehastenstoafasterwalk,don'tlethimgetawaywithit.Sure,hemightstillbewalking,buthealsojustdeterminedthepaceandthenexttrailridehe'llpushhisluckevenfurther.     I was on the road during the Rodeo Parade, but I hearwent really well and was a lot of fun. Im looking forwarreadingaboutitinthismonthsnewsletter.

    Weve had a busymonth. The lastfewweeks havebeena lot oftraveling.Firsspent a week in Susanville for the All Star Regional Championship for ourRiverLittle League Team. They won the regional championship so it was oSanta Cruz the next weekend. We attended Alberts 45th class reunion du

    Auto Expo. The following weekend was a family reunion in Pleasanton, tfamily came to visit us this last week and now we are heading off again forannual anniversary vacation. We will be traveling to Missoula, MT to seedaughter & son-in-law and the new condo they bought, then to W

    Yellowstone, to Jackson Hole, WY and then to Pocatello, ID. A couple ofthereandthenwellmakethetwodaytripbackhome.Hopefullywewillbetostopoff and see Tom and Kathy Acord onourwayback.

    Weve been busy with some remodeling as well as really busy withvegetablegardensandharvestingthem.Whenwegetbackitwillbetimetopears and peaches.By the timeallthatisdoneit willbe timefortheCuneo C

    ride.Wearehopingtobeableattendthisevent.On September 12th (the weekend after Labor Day) you are all inv

    Mort was unable to attend the meeting. Jacque Murphy presented histanshaw&TenBearworkpartyreport.Mortreportedthatwedhadaery productive work party, with twenty-two Backcountry Horsemenresent. Part of the crew worked to dig out, and fence off the waterole at Ten Bears, and also set and cemented a second fire ring,reatingtwocampsites.TheotherpartofthecrewrodethetrailfromtanshawtoTenBearsandclearedbrush.Stanshawwasingoodshapend needed little repair. Mort plans to repair one water fitting at thewer corrals in Stanshaw, it was cracked and leaking water. He

    otified Bob Hemus that he could use picnic tables at the sites if Bob

    ouldfindany.

    EricareportedthattheForunaRodeoParadbeen a success. Erica Canevari, Jacque Murphy, Barry Stewart andWhite rode in the parade, Jacque Murphy also brought her pack

    along. Jeremy Dean and Crystal Lovfald walked with the riderhandedoutcandieswiththeunitsnameandwebsiteaddressattachthem.

    Erica Canevari reportedthat theride isalfilled to half capacity. Many non-members as well as current RedwUnit members have signed up. Several games are planned for theSeepage7forasign-upsheet.

    The Redwood Unit will need a new delegaattendthe annualStatemeetingin October.CarolePolasekmotiontablethis itemuntil thenextmeeting,BevHarveyseconded.

    Jacque Murphy asked if the uniinterested in being involved in this canned food drive again. Mmembers said they were and knew of others who wanted to attenyear. Jacque said she would start coordinating the ride with the Bank andinform the insurancecompany of the occasion. Jill mentanideatohaveotherorganizationsridewiththeunit,suchastheShPosse, the unit needs to find out if the separate organizations needowninsurancefortheride.

    -Bev Harvey reminded its not too late to sign up for Mercy Airpassed out sign-up sheets to interested members.
