Four horses on Day One, headed by an O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) brother to Group One winner and stallion Shamexpress, sold for NZ$750,000 or more with the top-priced yearling yesterday the fifth most expensive horse of the sale.
Shamexpress’ brother sold to a syndicate of Alan Bell Racing, China Horse Club and Newgate Farm for NZ$825,000 and yesterday, China Horse Club bought four more horses including the session topper who was catalogued as Lot 260.
Consigned by Cambridge Stud, the 8 August-foaled bay is out of the winning two-year-old Love Diamonds (Danehill). The filly is her dam’s ninth foal and she is a half-sister to four winners headed by the Group Three-placed Lovetessa (O’Reilly).
“I have watched her all week and Savabeel needs no introduction and she's from Sir Patrick's best family,” Michael Wallace told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Graeme Rogerson has the two-year-old out of the mare and thinks a lot of her and he was underbidder.
“Buying such quality takes much of the guesswork out of buying.”Love Diamonds is out of dual Group One winner Tristalove (Sir
Tristram), the dam of eight winners for as many to race including the stakes winner’s Viking Ruler (Danehill), Lovetrista (Rock Of Gibraltar), Kempinsky (Danehill) and Diamond Like (Danehill), herself the dam of the Group Two winner Forever Loved (High Chaparral).
A sister to Forever Loved out of Diamond Like sold on Monday to
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum for NZ$800,000.Waikato Stud’s Savabeel was the sire of four of the sale’s top ten lots,
and Wallace said that he is a sire that cannot be missed. “Regarding Savabeel, the market has woken up to him. He's an elite
stallion and his stats are off the charts. You can't ignore him,” he said.Over the two day sale 52 lots by New Zealand’s leading sire sold for
NZ$11,460,000 at an average of NZ$220,385. Cambridge Stud’s Marcus Corban said that they had expected the
Savabeel filly to sell for around NZ$500,000. “She might be the best filly in the draft and has gone to a top judge.
We were thinking half a million so the rest is a bonus,” Corban said. Wallace was unsure whether the filly would remain in New Zealand to
race or be sent to Australia to be trained.China Horse Club also added another well-bred filly, from the final
crop of O’Reilly (Last Tycoon), to their purchases yesterday.Catalogued as Lot 433, the filly was offered by Haunui Farm and sold
for NZ$450,000 to Wallace. The filly is a daughter of the Listed-winning, Group One-placed mare
Striker (Van Nistelrooy), who has produced two winners from two foals to race including last year’s Western Australian Oaks (Gr 3, 2400m) winner First Impressions (Rip Van Winkle).
The O’Reilly filly is Striker’s fifth foal, with her now two-year-old filly by Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) sold for NZ$19,000 at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale.

“It looks like we are predominately buying fillies and I suppose we are, but we have a strong stallion portfolio and we need to look long term,” Wallace said.
“This filly is by an exceptional sire and broodmare sire from a strong filly family that continues to expand. Mark Chitty and I have known each other for some time so it's good doing business with him and Haunui.”
Haunui Farm’s Chitty echoed Wallace’s sentiments about the November-foaled bay filly.
“She is a beautiful filly from a great producing family,” he said.“I would echo Michael's comment that her pedigree is exactly what
they need to support their stallions. An O'Reilly filly from his last crop, she fits the bill perfectly.”
White Colt Sells For NZ$510,000The white colt by first season stallion Shamexpress (O’Reilly) out of
The Opera House (Zabeel), catalogued as Lot 449, was at the centre of a spirited bidding duel yesterday.
The fourth foal out of winning mare The Opera House, a three-quarter sister to champion Might And Power (Zabeel), was sold to China Horse Club in conjunction with Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher for NZ$510,000.
Wallace, acting for China Horse Club, and Maher outlasted Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis to land the colt who is by the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Shamexpress.
The Opera House’s now two-year-old white filly called Casta Diva (High Chaparral) has been sent to Japan to race after being purchased by Dearest Club for NZ$450,000 at last year’s Premier Yearling Sale.
“The mare is doing a great job and that filly set the line in the sand so we always thought we would have to pay about what we did,” Wallace said.
Wallace said it was not the Windsor Park consigned yearling’s eye-catching colour that led China Horse Club to buy the colt. He said the colt’s temperament had been excellent after a long week of inspections.
“You have to discount the white factor – he is a beautiful horse,” Wallace said.
“There is no softness about him at all, he’s just full of hard muscle.”Maher will syndicate the colt in partnership with China Horse Club.Standing at Windsor Park Stud, Shamexpress had 13 yearlings sell
over the two day sale for an aggregate of NZ$2,502,500 at an average of NZ$192,500.
He was the leading first season sire at the sale and finished the sale as the eighth leading sire by average (for three or more yearlings sold).
“There are some nice young sires starting to emerge here in New Zealand and we’ve got a lot of faith in Shamexpress so it’s fantastic to see our confidence backed up by some good judges,” Windsor Park Stud’s Rodney Schick said.
“He’s been well-received by the Australian buyers who got to see first-hand what an explosive sprinter he was and to average NZ$192,500 off the back of a NZ$15,000 service fee is a nice reward for those that have supported him.”
Another first crop stallion, Jakkalberry (Storming Home), who was a Group One winner in Italy and placed in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in 2012, had two yearlings sell yesterday, headed by Lot 366 who sold for NZ$440,000.
Sold by Novara Park where Jakkalberry Stands, Lot 366 is a half-brother to Melbourne Cup winner Efficient (Zabeel) and Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Guillotine (Montjeu) being out of the Listed-placed Refused The Dance (Defensive Play).
The colt will be trained in Victoria by Jason Warren, who was at Karaka to buy the colt on behalf of his Victorian owner John Wheeler.
Novara Park studmaster Luigi Muollo was delighted with the way the colt was received by the market.

Wednesday 1 February 2017 White Colt Sells For NZ$510,000
“The colt himself is top quality and has great balance. If he'd been an August foal who knows what would have happened?” Muello told ANZ Bloodstock News of the 29 November-foaled bay.
“For Jakkalberry, it's a dream result. We think it is worthwhile to mention that he was a fast maturing stayer, the term ‘stayer’ can be misinterpreted to mean having to wait.
“Not in this case. A race like the Victoria Derby, 2500 metres, run at the end of October, is exactly where the Jakkalberry’s could be pointed.”
The other yearling by Jakkalberry to be offered at the sale was Lot 259, a chestnut colt out of Lioness (Generous), the dam of Lion Tamer (Storming Home), who was purchased by Phill Cataldo Bloodstock for NZ$100,000.
Moody After More Savabeel Success
Retired trainer Peter Moody purchased the third top lot yesterday when going to NZ$600,000 to secure a colt by Savabeel from the Waikato Stud draft.
Catalogued as Lot 420, the colt is the first foal out of Listed-placed Spending, a sister to Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Shopaholic (Pins) and Hong Kong Group One-placed Packing Pins (Pins). Further back this is the family of multiple Group One winner Sacred Falls (O’Reilly).
Moody has had success in recent years with the progeny of Savabeel,
including training 2015 ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Pasadena Girl (Savabeel), while he also raced and bred the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Nurse Kitchen.
"He's a quality colt with a pedigree to match," Moody said."We've had plenty of luck with the Savabeels and as a sire he's doing
the business in our markets.“This is the sale you come to for the top middle distance types and he
looks to fit that mould perfectly."Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick said the colt had the physique and
confirmation of a horse who could race as a two-year-old.“He’s a nice colt who won't take long. He’s typical of the family, he
looks like he'll run,” Chittick told ANZ Bloodstock News.“Peter Moody has put together a group and will race him.”
Slipper Aims For Exceed And Excel Colt
Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis is already planning an assault on the 2018 Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) and the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with Lot 312, an Exceed And Excel (Danehill) colt out of Group One-placed Oasis Rose (Oasis Dream).
Te Akau Racing paid NZ$625,000 for the first foal out of New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up by a renowned sire of juveniles, Darley’s Exceed And Excel.

Wednesday 1 February 2017 Slipper Aims For Exceed And Excel Colt
to follow in the footsteps of Sunday’s Karaka Million winner Melody Belle (Commands), a filly purchased by Ellis and trained in partnership by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards.
Ellis had been inspecting the colt at Cambridge Stud and monitoring his development for more than 12 months prior to purchasing him yesterday.
“My team of Mark Walker, Jamie Richards and our vet rated him the best colt in the sale,” Ellis told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Every horse I buy I have a plan for and the plan for this fellow will be the 2018 Karaka Million, a spell and then on to the Golden Slipper.
“Among our syndicates is one specifically for stallions and I was determined to get him for that syndicate.”
Exceed And Excel has sired 61 juvenile stakes winners to date, with six of those having won at Group One level in Golden Slipper winner Overreach as well as Guelph, Helmet, Earthquake, Outstrip and Reward For Effort.
Cambridge Stud’s Corban was full of praise for the Exceed And Excel colt, considering him alongside former champion Octagonal (Zabeel).
“Cambridge Stud has not bred a colt with this much class since Octagonal. He’s an absolutely magnificent colt,” Corban said.
Vandyke Buys Shocking Colt For NZ$300,000
Queensland trainer David Vandyke is already eyeing Cup success with a colt by Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Shocking (Street Cry) after he went to NZ$300,000 to buy Lot 336.
Consigned by Rich Hill Stud, the colt is a half-brother to Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) placed stayer Pentathlon (Pentire), who was also placed in last year’s Wellington Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) for trainer John Wheeler.
By the same sire as The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) placed Antonio Giuseppe and New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Fanatic, the Shocking colt is out of placed mare Pinders Prize (Prized), a half-sister to New Zealand’s Champion Stayer of 2006-07, Pentathon (Pentire).
Vandyke said the colt, who is the sixth foal from the dam, displayed a good attitude which gave him the confidence the yearling would cope with staying campaigns.
“I've had success with stayers and I bought this bloke with a view
to the classic staying races. After that, it's on to the Melbourne Cup,” Vandyke told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“He has the right temperament for that.”Rich Hill Stud’s John Thompson told ANZ Bloodstock News he had
always held the colt in high regard.“He’s a lovely colt and the bidders thought so too,” Thompson said.“Price-wise, the money was about where we thought so we were
quietly confident.”
Gelagotis Strikes Early Blow For I Am Invincible Colt
The Victorian country stable of Group One-winning trainer Peter Gelagotis will be strengthened by the addition of a colt by boom Australian sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) that he purchased in partnership with Cameron Cooke Bloodstock for NZ$310,000 yesterday.
Manny Gelagotis, racing manager for his brother, fended off competition from Caulfield trainer Mick Price to secure the colt which was the opening lot on Day Two.
Manny Gelagotis said the I Am Invincible yearling, who was offered by Blandford Lodge as Lot 241, was the one they really wanted.
“We saw him yesterday and kept going back to look at him as he

Wednesday 1 February 2017 Gelagotis Strikes Early Blow For I Am Invincible Colt
continued to grow on us. He's strong and could be an early two-year-old,” Gelagotis told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Compared to the recent Gold Coast sale, he's good value, but there was more in the tank if needed. We were pretty strong.
“He'll go to my brother, Peter, who trained Malaguerra to win the Group Two sprint at Moonee Valley on Friday night.”
The colt is out of winning mare La Biondina (Rock Of Gibraltar), a half-sister to Group Three winner Mica’s Pride (Bite The Bullet), who is the dam of Group One winner and stallion Criterion (Sebring), Group Two winner Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice) and Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) winning three-year-old Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock).
The colt is La Biondina’s third foal and her only foal to race is the city-winning gelding Vostok (Starcraft).
Vendor Blandford Lodge’s Graham Bax was pleased with the result despite the uncertainty of being the opening lot on Day Two.
“Being first lot of the day I was a bit nervous and set his reserve at $250,000, hoping for a good result,” Bax told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Mick Price was the underbidder, so good judges were involved. Let's hope he gets up and goes early.”
Snitzel Progeny PopularA Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) half-brother to Listed winners Fast Love
(Fastnet Rock) and A Chance To Dream (Volksraad) was yesterday sold by Highview Stud for NZ$525,000 to Good Harvest Bloodstock.
Catalogued as Lot 271, the colt is 11th foal out of Make Me Dream (Sadler’s Wells) who has produced seven winners including two stakes winners. She is from the family of 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Midway Lady (Alleged).
Hallmark Stud’s Brent Gillovic was left with no doubt that the Snitzel colt showed all the traits of a top-class racehorse.
“I thought he might make half a million, however, the reserve was somewhat below that. NZ$525,000 would buy me a nice lunch,” Gillovic told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Kris Lees, on behalf of Ron Wanless, was the underbidder. The colt himself is magnificent, the best colt I have ever offered.”
Highview Stud also sold a Snitzel filly out of Montwest (Montjeu) to Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer for NZ$210,000.
Catalogued as Lot 300, the filly’s dam is a half-sister to Group Two winner Natalie Wood (Yachtie) who in turn is the dam of Melbourne Cup placegetter Maluckyday (Zabeel).
Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel had seven yearlings sold for NZ$2,045,000 at an average of NZ$292,143 to finish second on the leading sires’ table for the sale (three or more sold). While I Am Invincible finishing on top with three yearlings selling for NZ$885,000 at an average of NZ$295,000 and a top price of NZ$425,000.
Exceed And Excel also had three yearlings sell for NZ$875,000 at an average of NZ$291,667 and Coolmore Stud’s Fastnet Rock was fourth by average at NZ$284,583 at an aggregate of NZ$3,415,000 for his 12 yearlings sold.

Te Akau Leading BuyerDavid Ellis of Te Akau Racing was again the leading buyer at the sale
after purchasing 26 yearlings for an aggregate of NZ$4,197,500 at an average of NZ$161,442.
His most expensive purchase of the sale came yesterday with the colt by Exceed And Excel for his stallion syndicate.
Ellis’ previous purchases at Karaka include the stallions Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice), Darci Brahma (Danehill), Hall Of Fame (Savabeel), Kings Chapel (King Of Kings), Rock ‘n’ Pop (Fastnet Rock) and stallion prospect Xtravagant (Pentire).
“That list of horses is the reason we keep coming to Karaka and our owners demand that we do,” Ellis said.
“I think it’s been an enormously successful sale and I take my hat off to the team at New Zealand Bloodstock for bringing together such a strong buying bench.
“To have three Sheikhs investing in New Zealand horses is a credit to the company and the vendors and I must say the sale’s been a huge of a lot of fun to be a part of.”
Ellis also stepped in to buy the final horse offered at the Premier sale, Lot 465, an O’Reilly colt out of Listed winner Twilight Granita (Iffraaj).
From the Bradbury Park draft, the colt was being auctioned by the retiring Joe Walls and was initially passed in before Ellis purchased the yearling for NZ$70,000 to ensure the legendary figure went out having sold his final lot.
China Horse Club bought five yearlings for NZ$2,190,000 at an average of NZ$438,000 followed by Tom Moore (7) for NZ$1,930,000, Duncan Ramage Thoroughbred Services (8) for NZ$1,710,000, Go Racing (12) for NZ$1,595,000, Hong Kong Jockey Club (5) for $1,400,000 all leading buyers.

average of NZ$187,000, while Cambridge Stud sold 36 yearlings for NZ$8,350,000 at an average of NZ$231,944.
Curraghmore was third with 17 yearlings selling for NZ$4,575,000 at an average of NZ$269,118.
“The main thing for us is to sell as many as we can because we own the majority of them outright,” Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick said.
“An incredible amount of hard work is put into getting to the past two days and it’s nice to now be able to sit down with our team and friends to celebrate another successful sale.”
Cambridge Stud’s Sir Patrick Hogan was also delighted with the results.
“It’s been an absolutely fantastic sale with new international buyers from far and wide giving our industry a huge profile boost,” Sir Patrick said.
“I think most people should be very pleased with the results from the top to bottom.
“Of particular note from what I’ve seen is that there has been a kick up from the domestic market which is great with the likes of David Ellis, Albert Bosma and other syndicators bringing new people into racing and giving the industry a boost.”
North Canterbury-based stud Beltana was the leading vendor by average (three or more sold) with three yearlings selling for NZ$1,235,000 at an average of NZ$411,667, including selling the sale-topping brother to Shamexpress.

New Zealand Bloodstock Pleased With Results
New Zealand Bloodstock managing director Andrew Seabrook was delighted this year’s sale which was able to attract new buyers to New Zealand, including Godolphin’s John Ferguson for the first time.
“While we couldn’t match last year’s record average, the more important median has stuck firm at NZ$140,000 and turnover is up,” Seabrook said.
“We’ve offered more Premier Sale horses this year and had a buying bench with enough extra depth to compete for them.”
“The sale clashing with Chinese New Year wasn’t ideal however increased participation from Dubai countered its effect.
“Again, we are grateful to our domestic buyers and overall leading buyer David Ellis and his Te Akau Racing team who continue to really bolster the sale.”
The New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale, which runs for three days, starts at 11am local time today.

Winx Third In TrialDual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Winx (Street Cry) is set to resume in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on 11 February after finishing third in a 1000 metre barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday. In her second barrier trial this preparation, the Chris Waller-trained mare settled second last under jockey Hugh Bowman before working to the line well to finish third in heat one. The barrier trial was won by the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Nancy (Big Brown) ahead of Waller’s Sacred Master (Mastercraftsman). Team Hawkes’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Divine Prophet (Choisir) finished sixth. “She felt a little more forward for this morning’s heat. Again we didn’t ask her to do a lot but there’s a little bit of moisture in the ground so she enjoyed that,” Bowman said.
Star Turn Wins TrialThe Team Hawkes-trained Star Turn (Star Witness) won a 900 metre barrier trial at Rosehill in good style yesterday. The colt, who won the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) and ran third in the Coolmore Stud Stake (registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) last preparation, was settled in a share of fourth with his stablemate Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) before easing around the field to win by half a length in heat five. Gerald Ryan’s Tango Rain (Manhattan Rain) was second, while Chautauqua was keen in the hands of Dwayne Dunn but kept on under a hold to finish third.
Half To Astern Trials WellThe Godolphin-raced Alizee (Sepoy), a half-sister to the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Astern (Medaglia d’Oro), ran out a convincing winner of a two-year-old fillies trial at Rosehill. The filly was settled in second by James Doyle and responded well once asked to quicken at the 200 metres, beating Didn’t Mention It (More
Than Ready) by a length and a half, with a break of three and a quarter lengths back to Longmu (Sebring) in third. The winning time for heat nine over 900 metres was 53.80, the quickest of the six two-year-old barrier trials.
Impressive Trial From Condor HeroesThe Gerald Ryan-trained two-year-old Condor Heroes (Not A Single Doubt) ran out a wide margin winner of his barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday. The colt, who ran second in the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) on debut in October, beat the Galapagos (Teofilo) by eight lengths under Tim Clark over 900 metres in heat 12 in a time of 54.00. Condor Heroes was purchased by Sun Bloodstock for $190,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Riversdale Farm. Click here to view the barrier trial replays.
Jameka Pleases In Jump OutThe Ciaron Maher-trained Jameka (Myboycharlie) pleased her connections in an 800 metre jump out at Caulfield yesterday. The mare, who was found to have a sacral tear in her back after running 15th in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), raced up with the pace throughout under Nick Hall and finished a close second behind stakes-winning sprinter Super Cash (Written Tycoon). "Nick was very happy," Maher’s assistant David Eustace said. "You could see she was moving very well. She was sharp out of the gates and clearly wanted to be there. She was up and about and very enthusiastic which is what you want.” Jameka is likely to resume in the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on 11 February.

colt finished second on debut in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) before breaking his maiden at Moonee Valley and is likely to contest the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) later this month. "He was very sharp. I sort of expected him to win that trial against some young unraced horses having their first trial, but he was really good. I couldn't be happier," Zahra said. "He smoked along and I just gave him a little squeeze up the hill and he trialled really well. I'm looking forward to him going to the races. I think he's improved for sure."
Noblet Pleased With MaresAndrew Noblet was pleased with both Super Cash and Silent Sedition (War Chant) at yesterday’s Caulfield jump outs. The pair ran in the opening heat, with Super Cash edging out Jameka while Silent Sedition was given a quiet ride in behind the leaders, and Noblet has mapped out a stakes campaign for both. "(Super Cash) will definitely run at Caulfield on 11 February, whether it be in the Rubiton Stakes or the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes, and then we'll map out a program from there based on what she does first-up,” Noblet told Racing.com. "All going well (Silent Sedition) will run second-up on 25 February in the Mannerism Stakes and then on to Sydney.” Click here to view the Caulfield jump outs.
Fell Swoop And Single Gaze To TrialLeading Canberra-trained runners Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) and Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt) are set face each other in a 900 metre barrier trial at Canberra on Friday. Matt Dale’s Group Two winner Fell Swoop has been off since running a close third to Malaguerra (Magnus) in the Darley Classic (registered as the VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) in November, while Vinery Stud Stakes (registered as the Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Single Gaze has been off the track since clipping heels and coming down in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) last April.

Spoils Set To Back UpCaulfield trainer Clinton McDonald is set to back up Spoils (Snitzel) in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield this weekend. The filly was beaten just under two lengths into fourth in the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) last week, and her trainer feels she has improved for that run. "She didn't have a great run, just the way the race panned out," McDonald said. "She probably wasn't fit enough for the run that she had and she raced a little bit fresh. This race is on a nine-day turnaround which is perfect and she has really come on from the run.”
Blue Diamond Third Acceptances TakenThird acceptances have been taken for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), due to be run at Caulfield on 25 February, with 79 two-year-old’s still in contention. Among those still entered for the $1,500,000 race is CrownBet’s $7 pre-post favourite Pariah (Redoute’s Choice), who made a winning debut in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on Saturday, the Lindsay Park-trained unbeaten filly Catchy (Fastnet Rock) ($9) and Tony McEvoy’s Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Aspect (Pluck) ($13).
Hobart Cup Field DeclaredA total of ten runners have been declared for Sunday’s $200,000 Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). Darren Weir has declared the progressive Big Duke (Raven’s Pass), who is due to be ridden by Brenton Avdulla, Lee and Anthony Freedman are set to run the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) winner Cool Chap (High Chaparral), while Tony McEvoy has declared Lucky Lucky Lucky (Lucky Owners). The locally-trained Up Cups (Helike), who won the Hobart Cup last year, is set to carry top weight of 58 kilograms. Click here to view the Hobart Cup field.
Gold Trail Possible For Mornington CupThe Charlie Appleby-trained Gold Trail (Teofilo) could tackle the Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m) on 25 March. The entire was successful over 2400 metres at Meydan last week, and Appleby is considering a tilt at the Mornington feature which is a ‘win and you’re in’ race for the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). "He ticks all of the boxes for racing (in Dubai)
a flat track on quick ground over a mile and a half is his gig,” Appleby said. "All being well, the plan is to go to Australia with Gold Trail. I haven't spoken to connections yet but we had it pencilled in that we would go for the Mornington Cup, which is a win and you're in race for the Caulfield Cup.”
Warrnambool To Host Jericho CupWarrnambool will host the inaugural $300,000 Jericho Cup (4600m) in November next year to commemorate Australia and New Zealand’s involvement in World War One. A race was run over the same distance in Palestine in November 1918, involving ANZAC soldiers and their horses, and the Warrnambool Racing Club’s Peter Downs said it was important to honour Australasia’s war past. "Australia has a proud war history and any event that positively promotes the involvement of the ANZAC soldiers and their horses during battle - we are only too happy to support," he said.
RV To Investigate LeaksRacing Victoria are to investigate the leaks that led to the resignation of former chairman David Moodie. Acting chairman Mike Hirst and stand-in CEO Giles Thompson have engaged the law firm Allens to investigate the leaks. In December, Racing Integrity commissioner Sal Perna published a report and found that, while Moodie was not the original source of the leak, he did pass on the information to Peter Moody relating to the cobalt investigations.
Vandyke Appeals FineDavid Vandyke has appealed against the $25,000 fine handed down to him following Yankee Rose's (All American) positive test to the banned substance Ketorolac after the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Vandyke pleaded guilty to the charge of allowing vet David Garth to administer the anti-inflammatory to the filly, who was subsequently disqualified having finished second to Global Glamour (Star Witness), as well as presenting the horse on a race day with the prohibited drug still in her system. A date has yet to be set for Vandyke's appeal hearing.
Surgery For PanyaApprentice jockey Deanne Panya has undergone surgery on a deep laceration to her chin and is likely to require a further operation to repair a broken collarbone suffered in a fall at Rosehill at the weekend. The 24-year-old, who guided Testashadow (Testa Rossa) to victory in the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) last month, fell from the Gary Portelli-trained Sebring Express (Sebring) around 250 metres from home during the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on Saturday.
New Zealand
Savile Row Set For Herbie DykeThe Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard-trained Savile Row (Makfi) is set to run in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on 11 February at his next start. The colt was beaten a nose by Hall Of Fame (Savabeel) in the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) last month, and Gerard feels the race is ideally spaced ahead of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on 4 March. “It works out well that way, three weeks from his last run and another three weeks to the Derby,” Gerard told www.theinformant.co.nz. “He’s done well since Trentham and it should work out well spacing his races, especially with the option for him to head to Australia in the autumn.”
Lowland Stakes Next For She Brings JoyShe Brings Joy (Sebring) is to be trained towards a tilt at the Lowland Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) at her next start. The filly took out the Royal Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day, and her trainer Stephen Marsh is planning on running in the Lowland Stakes at Hawke’s Bay on 2 March ahead of the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) on 18 March. "It's a case of having to do that – I don't think she could take two more runs going into the Oaks," Marsh said. "She probably won't run again until the Lowland Stakes. She was feeling her legs a bit after that last race so we gave her a little break and we'll bring her back up slowly."

Hasahalo Set For Diamond StakesTrainer Stephen McKee is to target the Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with Hasahalo (Savabeel). The Group Three-winning filly was second in the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) on Sunday, and her trainer is keen to tackle the NZ$200,000 Group One on 11 March. "All going well, we'll be back for the Diamond Stakes," McKee said. "She really rattled home, but to be fair the winner (Melody Belle) was too good. "We got a bit further back than we wanted when the pace went out of the race."
NZTR Distributes Circular Post MeetingNew Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) yesterday issued a circular providing a summary of the matters discussed at the meeting held between thoroughbred sector interests and representatives of the NZ Racing Board on 29 January. NZTR raised concerns as the meeting relating to a lack of growth in the New Zealand racing industry and the recent announcement by NZRB regarding the advancement of a potential fixed odds outsourcing solution with Paddy Power and Openbet.

Caorunn Set To ResumeNew Zealand-bred Caorunn (Showcasing) is set to return to the track in a Benchmark 67 (1000m) at Kranji on Friday. The Shane Baertschiger-trained three-year-old, who won the Phoenix Park 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) while trained in New Zealand, has been off since finishing third in the Juvenile Championship (SGP Gr 3, 1200m) in July. “He’s had two barrier trials without blinkers and he went really well. He’s really hit the ground running,” said assistant-trainer Scott Bailey. “It’s still 50/50 whether we will take them off at his racing comeback this Friday. We’ve toyed with the idea of leaving the blinkers off, but we’ll see.”

Heartbreak City Likely For DubaiHeartbreak City (Lando) is likely to be trained towards a tilt at the Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Meydan on 25 March, trainer Tony
Martin has confirmed. The seven-year-old was beaten narrowly into second by Almandin (Monsun) in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November and ran eighth over hurdles at Leopardstown on his reappearance on 22 January. "He's good - there's not a bother on him,” Martin told Irishracing.com. “We'll see where we are in a week or so, but I'd say Dubai is a fair possibility. That's probably where we'll go.”
Chrome Well After Pegasus World CupCalifornia Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) is reportedly in good health following his final career run in the Pegasus World Cup (Gr 1, 9f). The six-year-old underwent X-rays shortly after he arrived at Taylor Made Farm after swelling was found in his right knee, but they have returned all clear. "We've been X-raying him after every race, so we went ahead and did a full set of X-rays and everything looks good," Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made told Bloodhorse.com. "He's settling in good, he's been out in his paddock and everything is going good so far."

apparently now the training regime of the great Irishman Willie Mullins. Delegation, of course, does not come easily to most racehorse trainers but the trip to Karaka leaves them no choice.
Late night or not, the work gets done and the inspection completed. The quest for a Melbourne Cup winner is among the priorities for some and visitors Nigel Blackiston and Jason Warren secured a couple of ‘likely’ types yesterday.
A very late finish is not for the wiser heads of course. Other than staying up late to watch the Australian Open Tennis final on the eve of day one of the sales.
That was enough for Colin Little, pleased to have won with Navagio (Zacinto) at Flemington the day before, who was content to sip a pinot noir (New Zealand of course) and applaud the old boys Federer and Nadal.
The three-year-old daughter of Zacinto (Dansili) was purchased by Little for NZ$40,000 from the 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale and is raced by former VRC chairman Rod Fitzroy and his wife Paige.
New Zealand was, of course, also the source of Little’s best horse - the 2007 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner El Segundo (Pins). “Paid $140,000 for him which seemed like a fortune at the time,’ Little recalled. It worked out OK with the horse winning almost $4,000,000.

I haven’t, pardon the vulgarity, put my balls on the line and mated my mare to an expensive stallion. I’m not the trainer replenishing stock.
I will finish up with a share or two in a horse because I’m not very good at saying ‘no’ and I’ve learned that racehorse trainers are like children. The only word which means no is no.
It’s a touch surreal and, of course, serendipitous (my favourite word as regular readers will be aware) as nobody really knows what they’re buying. I find it remarkable that there can be enough differing opinions to ensure that dozens of horses will sell for pretty good money.
This sense of surreal is, perhaps, especially so in New Zealand given the delightful setting of the Karaka sales complex; the great Kiwi hospitality and the fact that the visiting trainers from Australia are ‘sort of’ on holiday. Well, they’re certainly on tour.
Everyone’s pretty chilled, bar a few nervous vendors.
Rival trainers enjoy a drink and a chat. Rival farm principals do likewise. It’s certainly a good time for a bit of chit-chat and, from my point of view, picking up the odd snippet of news. This, despite the seriousness of the task at hand. Livelihoods and futures are at stake in this ultimate racing game of picking a winner.
You cannot, of course, see ‘under the bonnet’ and many will be ‘better sold than bought”. Some will buy a very good horse for reasonable money, many more will be underbidders on same. Some will take a risk, at the higher end, and find that right stallion prospect.
For some, of course, it’s a rare chance to arrive home nearer to the time they’d normally leave home to start work. No names of course.
Decide, delegate and disappear which is

the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft.
New Zealand Bloodstock did manage to get the Prime Minister Bill English to open the sales as many of his predecessors have done. This drew some criticism from the general media who, as is the case in most countries, are unaware of the industry’s economic benefit and status as a major employer (12,000 plus jobs, I think, when last recorded).
Of course, you could argue that Australian governments had no real sense of the significance of the racing industry until the 2007 crisis of Equine Influenza. Perhaps Sunday’s meeting will convey a sense of urgency to Mr English and his colleagues. Neither nation, either side of the Tasman, can afford not to hammer this point.
“There is a light at the end of the tunnel here,” said New Zealand Bloodstock managing director Andrew Seabrook, “it’s fair to say our racing is not thriving but it’s heartening to see a positive response from the ‘powers that be’ to Sunday’s meeting and to have the Prime Minister here on Monday.
“We’re happy with the sales result. We’re basically bang on last year’s record sale. The clash with Chinese New Year possibly hurt us but the increased input from Dubai offset that. We were thrilled to have so many Australian buyers active and we are, of course, delighted that your (Australian racing) remains so strong which ensures that level of interest we have from Australian buyers.”
bloodstock interests, is lamenting the loss of Ferlax (Pentire) who had to be euthanised the weekend before the sales. You can bet his offspring will be stars.
Little is not moving as freely as the yearlings he inspects. He’s recovering from rupturing a tendon above his knee, an injury he apparently (foolishly) sustained trying to clamber under a fence at Flemington when Navagio ran there on Oaks day last year. I’ve suffered a similar mishap - ruptured patella tendon. Surgeon told me it’s the sort of injury a basketballer like Michael Jordan might sustain so I’m happy to run with that.
Tony Noonan’s not moving too freely either, recovering from a hip replacement. Sporting a beard which he says is Sean Connery like. Hmmm.
“It’s a great week. Really, I’d be happy to stay here (at Karaka), parked in a caravan at the back of the complex,’ said the man who secured his outstanding Ascot Vale Stakes winner Show No Emotion (Masterclass) at the Ready To Run Sales in New Zealand for NZ$35,000.
Now there’s a thought for NZB. A trailer park on site. The late nights might get even later.
Noonan’s Mornington neighbour Shane Nichols is in good spirits with the impending return of his Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible). “She’s going well and will run first-up in the Rubiton (Stakes). Craig Williams to ride. Steven King, to his great credit, rang me and said he wouldn’t be fit enough to do her justice,” he said.
Nigel Blackiston trained a double at Geelong on Sunday before watching Camino Rocoso (Shocking), the half-brother to his former star Littorio (Bellotto), win the Henley Park Maiden (1600m) at the Karaka Millions meeting at Ellerslie. “Looks a nice horse,’ Blackiston said. “How did you miss him,” I ask. “Wasn’t offered,’ he replied.
Yesterday he didn’t miss Lot 406 at NZ$140,000, the Dawn Approach (New Approach)colt from the same family as top European stayer Fame And Glory (Montjeu). Surely Cup bound.
Likewise, Lot 366 who made NZ$440,000. By Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) third Jakkalberry (Storming Home) from Refused The Dance (Defensive Play), dam of Melbourne Cup winner Efficient (Zabeel). Secured by Jason Warren who has abandoned thoughts of seeking a licence to train in Singapore. “I thought about Singapore but I’m staying home. And I’ll take this horse home and given him plenty of time. He’s a lovely horse,” Warren said.
Camino Rocoso, ridden by Hugh Bowman, looks the horse to follow - and another potential Derby winner for Murray Baker - from the twilight meeting. Already gelded, perhaps too he could eventually get to a Melbourne Cup.
He is by the Melbourne Cup winner Shocking (Street Cry) who also won the 2010 Maybe Diva Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) which was won, the following year, by Blackiston’s Littorio at his first run for 16 months.
The Ellerslie meeting, featuring a civilised six races and the Auckland’s course’s wonderful mounting yard, was a superb meeting but alas modestly attended (it was a holiday, long weekend) and preceded by an industry crisis meeting.
It did, at least, prove a positive precursor to the sales ahead with the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m), winner being Melody Belle (Commands) a NZ$57,500 purchase by David Ellis from last year's Premier Yearling Sale on behalf of Fortuna Bloodstock while Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge) was a NZ$240,000 Karaka yearling purchase from the Lyndhurst Farm draft, a successful pinhook for Lyndhurst having been bought for $120,000 at

Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge) remains unbeaten in seven starts after arriving late to snatch victory by a nose in last Sunday’s Karaka
Three-Year-Old Mile (RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie.Coming from well back in the straight,
Volpe Veloce showed grit and determination to defeat Heroic Valour (Fastnet Rock) with Jon Snow (Iffraaj) a close up third. Time was 1:35.01 with the favourite, Group One winner Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi), in fourth place.
Twice a winner at two years last season, Volpe Veloce has won from 1200 metres to 1600 metres, three of her earlier successes in stakes races, the ARC Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m), Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and the Castletown Stakes (Listed, 1200m).
Bred in NSW by well known racing identity
Nick Vass, Volpe Veloce went through the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale at the Gold Coast in 2014 where she was bought by New Zealand’s Lyndhurst Farm for $120,000. Lyndhurst Farm subsequently re-sold the filly for NZ$240,000 at the 2015 New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale and while she is yet to quite recoup her yearling cost in prize money, she is well on the way and has increased greatly her value as a potential broodmare.
After breeding Volpe Veloce, Nick Vass sold her stakes winning dam Bardego (Barathea) who subsequently foaled an of yet unraced brother, Raposa Rapida (Foxwedge), in 2014, another Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) filly in 2015 and a filly by Helmet (Exceed And Excel) last year. The Foxwedge 2015 filly is to be offered as Lot 365 by Rushton Park at the upcoming
Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne on 28 February.
Bardego’s foals before Volpe Veloce resulted in three winners, best being Black Opal Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner and high class sprinter Delago Bolt (Delago Brom) whose career was cut short by injury. Bardego’s dam Devil’s Gold (Bellotto) won three metropolitan races in Sydney and was stakes placed before producing seven winners.
A brilliant, early two-year-old when winner of the 2001 Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 900m) and the Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (Gr 3, 1000m), Bardego is by Barathea (Sadler’s Wells), one of the speedier sons of his great sire and winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) in the United States.

Barathea spent four full seasons shuttling to Widden Stud in NSW in the mid-1990s where he proved a qualified success, leaving such stakes winners as Porto Roca (Coolmore Classic (Gr 1,1500m)), Easy Rocking (Salinger Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)) and a successful sire in Queensland, Gold Wells, high class Western Australian performer Shirazamatazz and several others.
Results for Barathea in the Northern Hemisphere were similar to those in Australia with dual Group One-winning sire Tobougg the best of his European progeny.
Like his sire Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer), Barathea has achieved great success as a broodmare sire and in his case his record is far better than his performance as a sire of winners. Barathea’s daughters have to date foaled 81 stakes winners, among them 12 at Group One level such as Hunter’s Light (Dubawi), Monterosso (Dubawi) out of Porto Roca, Arabian Queen (Dubawi), New Zealand sire Jakkalberry (Storming Home), Shareta (Sinndar), Voila Ici (Daylami), Crackerjack King (Shamardal) and Konigstiger (Tiger Hill).
Major winners from Barathea mares in Australia and New Zealand include the import Qewy (Street Cry), Kittens (Redoute’s Choice), Tall Ship (Sea The Stars), Misstrum (Stratum), Jerezana (Lonhro), Georgette Silk (Flying Spur), Canali (Exceed And Excel) and Royal Reign (Viscount).
Volpe Veloce comes from the first crop of Group One-winning sprinter Foxwedge, the foundation sire for the fast expanding Newgate Farm in NSW.
So far Foxwedge’s best runners have been fillies: Volpe Veloce, Foxplay and Kentucky Miss with Foxplay bred along similar lines to Volpe Veloce in that her dam Butters (El Prado) is by a son of Sadler’s Wells.
With three stakes winners and seven stakes placegetters among a worldwide tally of 55 winners to date, Foxwedge has made a satisfactory start to his stud career and has also made an impact in Europe after shuttling north for several seasons.
While an outcross within four generations, Volpe Veloce has four crosses of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) in her pedigree.

Analysis: Having his first start, Ducimus was was well from the gates and was taken straight to the front. He travelled well in front before kicking strongly in the straight, fending off all challenges and having enough to hold off Undoubtable Miss who came from well back to finish a closing second. Undoubtable Miss raced wide without cover in the run and took the home turn on the outside of the field. She closed very strongly late to just miss the winner.
