The ProblemComplex automatic transmissions operate under high temperatureand stress. That’s why quality ATF (automatic transmission fluid)contains additives to provide much more than lubrication. But hightemperatures and mechanical stress deplete additives, causingincreased oxidation, acid formation, sludge and varnish deposits,lubricant thickening, corrosion and shortened ATF life. For example:

• Heat increases chemical activity and subjects transmission com-ponents to acid and corrosive attacks, sometimes seen as discol-oration and occasional buildup on component surfaces. Acidiccorrosion increases wear, leading to premature component failure.

• Transmission gears and bearings turning at high speed churn ATF,and foaming can occur. The ProblemFluids are essential to vehicle operation, but with use and time theydegrade and cause deposits. Most transmission failures occur be-cause the transmission fluid is not changed.

Automatic transmissions subject ATF to high temperatures andpressures, causing oxidation, fluid deterioration and eventually break-down; reducing lubricity while accumulating contaminants, varnishdeposits, friction material debris and abrasive wear metals that grindseals, valves and friction surfaces. Lack of maintenance can inhibitshifting, cause leaks and premature transmission failure.

Unlike engine oil, the traditional method of changing ATF – removingthe pan, changing the screen and gasket and then adding ATF –typically replaces less than 40% of the fluid. So 60% of the “problem”fluid stays in the torque converter, valves and cooler lines. New ATFcontains more detergents than any other vehicle fluid. QMI BRAKE FLUID TEST STRIPS — Strip Dip™ reliable testing with FASCAR® technology

The problem

Brake fluid is the most neglected fluid service. More than 70% of vehicle manufacturers recommend brake fluid flush service,but their recommendations are limited to time and mileage. Many factors impact the condition of brake fluid; age, drivingconditions, environment, driving habits, etc. A vehicle with 12,000 miles can have brake fluid “virtual age” of 30,000 miles. Manycondition-related factors cannot be detected by visually examining brake fluid.

Waiting until brake fluid fails a moisture test may be too late. When corrosion inhibitors become depleted, corrosion can pitmetal bores in the master cylinder, slave cylinders and ABS components. Pistons cannot move as freely, seals becomedamaged and cylinders can develop leaks. Repairs are very expensive.

The solution

Conventional coolant analysis has been available for many years, butthe addition of color dyes for marketing purposes and formula changesincluding ELC (Extended Life Coolants)/Long Life pose a challengeto test-strip diagnostic technology.

Various colors have been added to differentiate coolants from eachother. These dyes complicate testing methods.

The condition of the anticorrosive package of conventional coolantscan be analyzed by verifying their Reserve Alkalinity (RA) level, notaccepted as a marker for ELC/Long Life coolants.

The ELC/Long Life formulas utilize OAT, HOAT, NOAT and MOATtechnologies. Unlike conventional coolants, they operate at a fullrange of RA and varying pH (Acidity - Alkalinity) levels.

QMI’s “All-In-One” coolant diagnostic dip-strips provide testingfor both glycol/water mix (should be 50% glycol/water) and thecondition of the anti-corrosive package (Reserve Alkalinity “RA”and Acidity - Alkalinity “pH”).

Testing is simple and accurate, but sometimes performedincorrectly. Please follow these steps and you’ll find the QMICoolant Test Strips easy to use and simple to read for both youand your customers:

1. Dip Test Strip into coolant that is less than 100•F / 43•C fortwo seconds (immerse all three test pads).

2. Remove from coolant and shake once briskly to removeexcess coolant.

3. Wait 40 seconds for pads to cure. Complete the following testpad checks within 30 seconds.*

4. Check the end pad first using the bottle’s Freeze Point /Boiling Point chart. The pad color should indicate 50%Glycol.

A significant benefit of QMI Coolant Test Strips coolantdiagnostics is that you don’t need to know the service historyof the vehicle or if coolants have been mixed or otherwise. Ifthe coolant is RED, use the “RED Coolants” Freeze Point /Boiling Point chart (it adjusts for the red dye). For all othercoolants use the “All Others” Freeze Point / Boiling Pointchart.

5. Compare the middle pad to the bottle’s “Reserve Alkalinity”chart. If the coolant’s Reserve Alkalinity is 6.6 or higher, thecoolant is GOOD (PASS) and the test is completed.

Only “Go To The Next Step” if the coolant’s ReserveAlkalinity is below 6.6.

6. Compare the strip handle pad to the bottle’s “pH” chart for afinal “PASS or “FAIL” evaluation.

This test identifies coolant that needs service and allows you toprovide a superior fluids preventativemaintenance program for your customers.

The ProblemWhen making a turn, the outer wheels of a vehicle must travel fasterthan the inner wheels. The differential acts as a balance arm,establishing constant equilibrium of torques and forces between theleft-hand and right-hand driven wheels. In standard (or open) differ-entials, power is directed to the wheel offering the least resistance.This works well when making a turn, but when one wheel is lifted offthe ground, it causes the suspended wheel to turn while the other wheelremains motionless.

Limited-slip (or positraction) and locking differentials are traction-increasing devices. Locking differentials transfer all available torqueto both wheels.
