PERCEPTION SURVEY-SDAFI POULTRY FARM EXPANSION PROJECT 2
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this study was to understand consumers’ perceptions of the
proposed poultry farm expansion project in Sitio Cebulan, Astorga, Sta. Cruz, Davao del
sur. Specific objectives were to:
1. Determine the perceptions of community members and other key stakeholders on the
potential impacts both positive and negative of the poultry farm expansion project in the
vicinity;
2. Determine the social acceptability of the proposed poultry farm expansion project;
3. Determine conclusion and recommendation for project proponent & government
regulator in appropriate action on the proposed project.
METHODOLOGY
This study used descriptive survey methodology. The statistical analysis was also
descriptive in nature and the instrumentation followed Dillman’s (2007). Tailored Design method
to ensure accurate question development and data collection. The sample for this study was
consumers in three select areas namely Sitio Cebulan, Sarimuro Hills and Astorga Hills in
Barangay Astorga, Sta. Cruz, Davao del sur. A total of 31 respondents formed the sample asked
to participate in the survey with all 31 agreeing to participate. Participants were selected at
random through direct contact at five (5) sites that were also selected in Barangay Astorga. For
a majority of the occasions, surveys were administered between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m.; a few
were conducted during the 1 to 3 p.m. time period.
Participation in the survey was incentivized by offering individuals who responded the
opportunity by way of giving them a token. A printed survey instrument was developed based on
PERCEPTION SURVEY-SDAFI POULTRY FARM EXPANSION PROJECT 3
a review of literature (Frick et al., 1995; Terry & Lawver, 1995; Wachenheim & Rathge, 2000).
The survey consisted of two parts: (a) a section that determine the personal profile of the
respondents, (b) a section that assessed consumer perceptions of knowledge of poultry
production and the industry. The questionnaire contained 8 statements assessed consumer
perceptions of policies, procedures, and standards in the poultry industry.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study on the perception of the communities and other significant stakeholders are
so important for the operation and expansion of poultry farms in the project site.
A study on the performance of poultry farms will help the producers to take
appropriate investment decisions and make reliable estimates of the cost of production and
maintenance of layer farms. This may also help to frame a suitable price policy and avoid the
influence of intermediaries and middlemen. The significance of this study is its analysis of the
problems faced by the poultry farm owners in their production and marketing of poultry
products and it will help them to realize and take timely measures to prevent the problems.
Hence, the operation of a poultry farms with communities living nearby requires due
diligence in terms getting the perceptions of the community members in order to determine
the social acceptability of such agricultural ventures in the countryside.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The area of the study is limited to the adjoining communities in Sitio Cebulan, Sarimuro
Hill and Astorga Hill, all within Barangay Astorga, Sta. Cruz, Davao del sur .
The research has been undertaken based on the views, opinions and information
provided by the farmers and other community members. As they furnished some information
from their memory, the accuracy is subject to the recall bias. However, efforts have been
PERCEPTION SURVEY-SDAFI POULTRY FARM EXPANSION PROJECT 4
taken to minimize the error through checks and cross checks at the time of interview. To
ascertain cost, revenue and profit the average of the value furnished by the respondents have
taken into account.
As the results are arrived on the basis of average values the results may not have so
much accuracy as in the perception survey. Most of the data was given by 31 the respondents,
only from their memory which may not be accurate.
PERIOD OF STUDY
A half year was taken up for this research. The primary data gathering was conducted
only for three (3) months period from middle of May to middle of August 2021, while the
secondary data were collected during the year 2020-first semester of 2021. However, a
longer duration has also been considered whenever necessary.
TOOLS USED FOR THE ANALYSIS
In the present study various statistical tools like Percentage, Arithmetic mean and
Coefficient of variation.
