Merafe Resouces says the commissioning ofthe Lion II smelter near Steelpoort isexpected during the second half of 2013 andabout 50% of the budgeted cost of R1000million was incurred to 31 December 2012.The company says in its Abridged AuditedGroup Annual Financial Statements that inspite of heavy rainfalls and communityunrest, the expected commissioning date isstillenvisaged in the second half of 2013 andthe project remains within budget. Once thisplant is fully operational, additionalconsumption efficiency improvements andcost savings are expected to materialise. The company is a joint venture partner inthis project with Xstrata.

Merafe Resources says stainless steelproduction is expected to increase by 4% in2013 and by 5% in the long term whichwould lead to increased growth in demandfor ferrochrome globally.

Given the reduced supply of ferrochromeresulting from the Eskom buy-backagreements in South Africa, coupled withimproved market sentiments, the companyexpects increased pricing going forwardsaying Merafe’s low cost base leaves it wellpositioned to take advantage of theincreased demand for ferrochrome.

The company says it looks forward to afurther strengthening of its position as thelowest cost producers in South Africa whenLion II comes on stream. .During 2012,Merafe’s total ferrochrome production was242 000 tonnes which was 8% lower than

the comparative period primarily as a resultof weaker demand and participation inEskom’s power buy-back programme. Thecompensation received from Eskom for theelectricity not consumed was adequate tocover the costs and lost profits on theassociated volumes. Operating capacityutilisation for the 2012 year reduced to 66%compared to 72% for the prior year.

Total cost increases were contained at9.2%.

The company says growth in stainlesssteel production in 2012 was primarily drivenby the increased production of stainlesssteel in China. This resulted in a new recordproduction of stainless steel in 2012 of35.2m tonnes compared with the 34.1mtonnes in 2011. Global demand forferrochrome was up year on year, to 9.7mtonnes in 2012, exceeding the previous highof 9.5m tonnes in 2011.

The increased demand and reducedsupply of ferrochrome resulted in thedrawing down of global ferrochrome stocks.A number of issues, including thecontinuation of concerns for the Eurozonedue to the ongoing debt crisis, economicwoes in the United States and othergeopolitical events, such as the change ofleadership in the Communist Party of China, resulted in weaker market conditions whichaffected ferrochrome demand in the secondhalf of 2012.Global ferrochrome productionincreased to 9.3m tonnes in 2012 comparedto 9.2m tonnes in 2011.

Mr Steven Sebulela said: “I don’t trust thepolice 100%. Not all of them are doing badthings. What those ones did with the taxidriver was unacceptable. Their aim is toprotect and serve so we don’t know whathappened there”.

Me.

Mr Richard Magatsela said: “Whatever thosepolicemen did last week was not right. Wecannot trust the police in general. Bribes andall that stuff they do is not right. They mustdo a proper job. That is what they get paid forand is trained for”.

Mr Kgotso Malapane and Mr Mpho Mokwena said: “The police have a problem. No, we don’ttrust them. They kill people”.

Mr Dunstan Lowan said: “Last week’sincident can never be an isolated problem. Ifthere are criminals at my house and I hearthe police sirens, the chances are good thatI’ll be running from them too. There is nothinggood about them at this stage. They arebrutalising. We are now also dentedinternationally. We can expect the sametreatment from the Mozambicans as we’vegiven their people over here. We are not safewith the police”.

Mr Max Makgabo and Mr Lucas Makofane said: “If we run to the police they will kill us. Therewon’t be any trust towards them. Many people die at the hands of the police. They must saveus, but they are not doing their job. We must do the job ourselves, but it is against the law.Maybe we should get our own guns”.

Mnr. Calvin Mphogo sê: “Nee, ek trust nie diepolisie nie. Kyk dan na daai ding van laasweek, hulle maak mense dood. Dit gebeurook baie, nie net laas week nie. Die andergroot ene was met Marikana”.

Me. Cecilia de Bruyn sê: “Hulle het by my huisingebreek en binne 10 minute was dieBurgersfort polisie daar. Die Burgersfort polisieis uitmuntend. Ons is besig met ‘n communityprojek saam met die polisie om die inbrake teprobeer verminder. Daar word by 15 - 20 huise‘n week ingebreek maar dis nou weer stiller.Laas November toe daar by ons ingebreek is,was die saak meer as die 400ste inbraak virdie maand. Hulle het nog net drie keer hierdiejaar by ons probeer inbreek.Gelukkig was hulleminder suksesvol. Ek dink daai voorval inJohannesburg met die taxibestuurder was ‘ngeïsoleerde voorval”.

Police conduct in South Africa came into thespotlight again after eight Daveyton policemenallegedly tied a 27-year old man to the back ofa police van and dragged him along a street inDaveyton on Tuesday last week. Thepolicemen were being caught on camera byeyewitnesses. The man, Mido Macia was a Mozambicannational and died in the police holding cellsseveral hours later. He was a taxi driver andallegedly parked wrongfully on a road. Thisapparently lead to a scuffle between the policeand Macia. The policemen claimed they simplyput the “resisting suspect” into the police van.A post mortem showed that Macia died of headand internal injuries. The Congress of SouthAfrican Trade Unions told the press this weekthat the SAPS told them that Macia died afterbeing attacked by another man in the cells atthe police station. Two warrant officers and six constables havesince been charged with the murder of Macia.A large group of protestesters gathered outsidethe court in Benoni, some waving posters. Oneposter read “Steve Biko also died in policecustody”.Macia’s family expressed their disappointmentwith the way the whole case was being handled.By the time of going to press, the identity of thepolicemen had not been made public. We asked readers how this incident influencestheir trust in the police and how they feel aboutthe police in South Africa.

Me. By hulle is Lenette Volschenk.

Mr Patrick Mafuwane said: “On the 100%scale, I trust only 30% of all policemen. Many of them only protect famous people. We ordinary people are struggling to behelped”.

Mr CJ ONochie (left) said: “Both parties in last week’s incident did not do right. Not all theSouth African police are doing things like that. We still trust them in our area. Some of themare doing good in our community”. With him are Mr Steve JuuJuu and Mr Elliot Sebulelo.

Ms Johanna Selahle said: “Those policemendoing things like that are not the properpolicemen. Proper policemen would not dothat. I feel shame for what those men did. I’venever heard anything wrong with theBurgersfort police. I still trust them. They aredoing their job”.

My vrou het die klag by diepolisie gaan lê. Ek en my familie is soos honde. Daar was ‘n man by die Women’s Rights mense watvriendelik was en probeer help het. Hy het met die polisie gaan koffie drink en toe na die tydvir my kom sê dat hy die saak liewer gaan los. Ons moet niks doen nie. Dit was of ek kon sienhy het geld gekry om alles te los. Ek het almal se name wat ek mee gewerk het en het al dieproof van wat ons probeer doen het.By die polisie trust ek niemand nie”. By hom is MrLeonard Motene en Mnr Kgaogelo Mphogo.

delivered on Saturday. The centre caresfor more than a 100 children on a dailybasis.

A pleasantsurpriseFlex is a word that does not seem to havemuch in common with cars such as RollsRoyce, but it is a word hyped by Opel for theback doors of the Opel Meriva that open the‘wrong’ way, calling them ‘flex doors’. Sothere you have it – if you study thecontemporary Rolls Royces, they also haveflex doors like the Opel Meriva!

Jokes aside, the other than conventionalback doors of the Opel Merviva 1.4 turbo we

received from Westvaal Steelpoort to testdrive this week, proved to be hugelypractical as they open up more than 80degrees compared to the 67 degrees ofconventional back doors.

After you have tucked junior into theback seat, he or she will love the bladestyled lower windowsill at the back seat andwill be able to see outside from a child seat, for which there is two ISO fix anchor points.

If you only have a dog, you can lower the back seats in a jiffy tocreate a large loading bay behind the front seats of a, what wefound, a very practical MPV.

The Meriva’s interior is quite subdued and the perceived qualityof materials and fit is quite high.

Finding the right position behind the steering wheel is easy andthe front seats are very comfortable. The steering can also beadjusted for height and reach, keeping the wheel rim from the neatdials of the instrument cluster. No Tokyo-by-night here and lightingof the instruments and the myriad of buttons on the centre of thefacia is quite pleasant, especially for night driving.

The myriad of buttons seem daunting at first, but are actuallyquite logical to use, together with some of the controls on thesteering wheel.

O yes, another flex is the centre console which Opel calls flexrail. It simply means that you can configure the centre console toyour heart’s content in three layers, which also hides drinks holders,CD holders and an armrest if you so wish.

The back seat will take three people, the middle one a littlesmaller than the other two and you will need to shrink him or her alittle bit more if you have a very ambitious configuration of the centreconsole …

The Meriva comes in two configurations, the Enjoy and theCosmo (?) with the Cosmo the more expensive one with a full glassroof. Not very practical in Burgersfort and surrounds in summermind you, but luckily it can be closed by the press of a button andthe air conditioner is very efficient. Bet it will instantly transformjunior into a stargazer at night.

But how does this MPV go you ask?Surprisingly well. The 1.4 Ecotec turbo motor pulls strongly through all the six

gears and a 0 - 100 km/h will see you in just more than seconds inideal circumstances. 103 kW @ 4900 r/m and 200 Nm between1850 and 4900 r/m makes it no slouch.

The motor needs to be kept boiling for overtaking and adownshift or two from the sixth gear easily accomplishes that.

Boiling will also push fuel consumption through the roof, butgood economy can be had if you drive like your mother in law wantsyou to.

On the road visibility was good and the vehicle soaked up bumpsquite easily. It was also quite surefooted, even through the twisties, where there was just a tiny hint of a wallow before the myriad ofelectronic gizmos caught the car.

Will it work in our environs?Sure it will, except for two little gripes – The low profile tyres and

space saver spare wheel. Not good where potholes are rife.Prices at Westvaal Steelpoort (tel 013 230 9519) are R242 200

for the Enjoy and R262 900 for the Cosmo, VAT included.

Last week Saturday the Thorburn SecuritySolutions Community Golf Day was hosted atTubatse Chrome Club. This annual event is oneof the ways in which Thorburn says thank youto the Sekhukhune Community for their support. This day was an opportunity for the golf caddiesat the Tubatse Chrome Club to show their skillson the other side of the game - by playing.Thorburn equipped four Tubatse Chrome Clubcaddies with clothing and the team enjoyed theday with the other players. Teams from localschools, mines and a community team alsoparticipated while a ladies team and a TubatseClub team was also entered. Thabang Moropa,Thorburn Holdings executive director andshareholder, also participated in the day.Executive Mayor for Sekhukhune DistrictMunicipality Mogobo David Magabe attendedthe lunch after the golf.Caddies who worked on the day were spoiltby Thorburn with a food parcel, cap and t-shirtto say thank you for what they do at the Cluband for the players. It happens on some daysthat they may walk long distances to the clubonly to find that players might not be playing orthat there are too many caddies versus players. The Thorburn idea of a caddie academy isbecoming more and more of a reality. The day was not about winning, which wasreflected in the prize giving which changedformat from the past. The first three winningteams received ordinary prizes, but amongstothers were two ice machines, two microwaveovens, vacuum cleaners, fans, cooler bags etc.handed out to players through a lucky drawevent. The overall winner was a team from theSteelpoort Academy lead by head master MrAlberts.A second pull or push cart was also deliveredin the Sekhukhune area and will be handed toa worthy individual in the community. The cartcan be used to transport water cans, goods ingeneral or for entrepreneurs selling goods nextto the road. Thorburn would like to train a localin manufacturing the carts, design multipurposeand different carts and encourage businessesto buy these carts from the local entrepreneur

to distribute amongst communities. The local Thorburn management team assistedwith the arrangements for the day. The teamsaid thank you to everyone who contributedtowards this fun day with the community, clientsand business associates.(Information: Dolf Scheepers, ThorburnSecurity Solutions).

Halfway through players received a prego rollto keep the hunger away.
