    3 ANUARY 1979. .9^

    DEAR CHRISTIAN FRIENDS:

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL AND MAY GOD'S RICHEST BLESSINGS FOLLOW YOU THE WHOLE YEAR

    THROUGH,

I can only but nraise God for all the wonderful b lesa in^^s He has fiven me and thelessons He has tauf̂ ht me in the nast year, and I am lookiner forward to a much deener

relationship with Him in this coming year.

First of all, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for the lovely cardsand rememberances which came my way over the Christmas season.

With my joy there was also a measure of sadness. A very dear and treasured friendof mine passed away around Thanksgiving. Mr. and Mrs. George Frantz of Ladoga have

played a major part in my Christian life for many years and it was a hock when I eceived the news of his passing. We somehow feel that those we love dearly will never

leave us, however we rejoice when we know they have joined our Lord and Saviour.

I ent a December newsletter, but unfortunately it was never received bv mv

forwarding agents. Mail is gett in--^ a bit uinpredi ie table these davs. Airmail letters

    usually arrive in 5 ' ' o i ' ' " ^ 3 a y s , but now they som etimes take two weeks.

We are still travelling to Karoi twice a month to visit and pay the staff remaining

at Chidamoyo Hospital. Thev are carrying on a marvelous work, in suite of the m«mydangers faced. I am proud and pleased with the maturity shown by the young man and

woman I call my children. They have a great respons ibility at the Mission, plus he is

the driver who makes the dangerous trip to Karoi for the payroll and mission supplies.

I praise the Lord that they depend on Him for strength and guidance and they receive

    it four-fold.

Elections have been postponed here in Rhodesia until April. The future is still

unknown and sometimes frightening. However, we know God holds the future in H- |8 hands

and we must trust Him completely.

Many of you have expressed concern for my personal safety and I do appreciate your

'concern. There are dangers here, but I assure you I feel just as safe here in Sinoiaas I would walking down the streets of San Francisco or any other large citv in the U.S.

I feel deeply that God has a purpose for me here and until I lose that assurance, I willremain to do whatever He leads me to do. My request is that you will continually liftRhodesia up in your prayers.

Now for a bit of reporting on my activities over the past weeks. The month of

December saw me very busy with my flannel-graph lessons at the little Sunday School forblack child ren, ss well as using it at the Hillsi de Chanel for the Christmas program.

The last week before Christmas I used it to depict the entire Christmas Story in the

display window of the Good News Center. Each day I changed the scene from the entry

into Bethlehem, the messages to the shepherds, the Nativity scene, and the Vise Men.

It was a tremendous witness and so very attractive. Many people here have never seen

visuals of this caliber and they were fascinated bv it.

When the Fraeurea left in October, it was nlarned that Dr. Gloria Cobb and I ove

into their house here in Sinoia, in order to keen the many things that will i ? o back tothe Mission, if it reopens.

We had been t rv inff to (ce t thirurs in order for the move and it was accomplishaJ ont h e a tu rday before New Tear s . But w e discovered t h a t movini? t h r ee househo lds^ plusal l of the hospital eauipment, into one house would not work, so it was decided that

I hould find anotha*place. The place I eft had alreadv been rented, but the avencvhad another house avail-ahXe for the same rent, ao I rnmediatelv anatched it up and

moved af̂ ain on Mondov. New Tears Day.

Dr. Cobb will continue to take her main meals with me at #5 Mahacha Close, whiles h e lives at #1 Ange l King .

My new home is in a quiet £ u : ' e ao f Sinoia and a bit closer t o town and t o m y w o r k .My Alsation has a huge yard to chase his ball in and I have two extra room s that willalways be available to g uests passing through Sinoia. Perhaps you are wondering whyI need such a large house . The answer i s I feel confident tha t God has a purpose fo rme in this place. Many times there is a need for rooms for overnight guests. I praiseGod for supplying all our needs, those o f yesterday, today and tomorrov;.

    Needless to say that after two moves in one week-end, I was to tally exhausted,h o t t o ment ion the deta i ls that g o w i t h m o v i n g , such as having~the e lec tx^ ci tyTXifa terv-e t c . , t u rned on and s igning t he new lease .

I praise God that the Good News Center has now hired a full time clerk for thestore, making it possible fo r me to do th e duties o f manager, boo kk eeper, purchasingagent a n d s u p e r v i s i n g properly. I also have a bit m o r e time to d o ot her things, suchas co rrespondence, th e ho spital boo ks, and travelling to ot her churches spreading theGood News through the use o f the flannel-graph lessons, etc. I praise the Lord forleading m e i n to anoth er phase o f His precious w o r k .

    Please continue t o pray for me as there i s nothing that v / i l l help me more thany o u r prayers. Also d o n ' t f o r g e t to pray for this beautiful co untry, Rh osesia, w h i c hneeds God ' s guidance so desperately.

    Thank y o u all, o n c e again, for b e i n g m y faith ful friends a n d supporters t h r o u g hout 1978 and let us look forward to a great year for o ur Lord in 1 9 7 9 .

    Dear Christian Friends:

I t i s a snnny/rainy day here in Bhodesia . By t h a t I mean tha t the son i s w h - l n l n gone minute and it is raining the next. However, the bits of rain tend to cool off whatwould otherwise be a hot murky day. I nderstand that you in the Bidp>west are having

    ano the r co ld / snowy win te r. Af te r be ing home in t h e s n o w l a s t year,I

do appreciate o urwarmer weather here.

    So far the new year has proved to be one of lees tensions in sone areas and worsetensions in other areas. Politically things are very tense in anticipation of the coming elections in April. It is anybody's guess as to how the election will-go and just—w h a t wi l l happen a f t e rwards . The Western World has a lmos t " l i t e r a l l y washed th e i r handsof Bhodes i a" , it s e e m s . It is a p i t y because Bhodes ia is a c o u n t r y t h a t c o u l d be at e r r i f i c asset to the western world. We know that Qod is working in this country.

Just this week we were thrilled in the Book Store when one of the local Magistrates

    (High C o u r t Judge) c a m e i n t o t h e shop a n d r e q u e s t e d a l a r g e n u m b e r o f p a p e r b a c k B i b l e s , ^80 that he might distribute them to those he comes in contact with.

    Other stories have reached us of some of the high leaders in strategic places whohav e ful ly turned t o Q o d fo r s t r eng th and w i s d o m . M a n y of t h e a r m y beys a re a l so tu rni n g t o Q o d as t h e y face s u c h t ragic circumstances everyday, and on ly Q o d can g ive t h e mthe fortitude to bear their burdens.

s for Chidamoy o, it is still carrying on bravely. Wo are so thankful for th e/dedica t ion of our f ew staff members t h a t are wil l ing to s t a y on under grea t h andicaps .

    Transpor ta t ion is almost nil in t h a t area, t h u s our pat ient l o a d isĵ ry l o w. We docont inue in the hope tha t th ings wil l get bet ter fo r the hospi ta l , as i t i s a greatsou rce of reaching people f o r C h r i s t .

    M y dog S aber and I are now set t led in our new locat ion, which I ave loreviouslyto ld you i s a l i t t le nearer to t o w n and my w o r k . J u s t las t evening I entertained allt h e Chidamo yo missionar ies at a dinner par ty. I t was a great success until w e reached

    the dessert . Our favori te dessert i s hom^-made ice cream _ a n d I managed to make af reezei^of~±tT It lo6k^~^ g^d and was f rozen Jus t ri^t, but when w e s tar ted t oeat i t w e discovered th at th e cyl inder h a d evidently sprung a l eak and the i ce creamw a s so sa l ty i t w a s unedible. I w a s about ready to c r y and so were m y gues t s as w elooked a t t h a t love ly hoBe-made i c e cream and n o t be able t o ea t i t . B ut w e wereable to enjoy strawberris and angel food cake, anyway. (Thanks to friends who hadsen t me the c a k e m i x ) . So, as w e a l l k n o w, " t h e best la id plans o f mice and m e n . . . . " .

    This past Sunday I w a s pr ivi leged t o g o t o t h e African Church a t Alaska Mine , afew mi l e s outs ide of S i n o i a . Dear Friends:

This week Fay received a long letter from Judy, and in it she stated that sheprobably would not write a newsletter for July. Her letter was so informative, thatFay suggested that we share part of it with you, as it answered many questions manyof you have been asking. The letter was dated June 10th.

"Just a line to let you know I am alive and still smiling, although I am sotired it is an effort. I m a wee bit confused as I thought Sunday was a day

    of r e s t , but how w rong tha t h a s beentoday. I t is 6 . M . and I have been onthe g o s ince 6 A . M . . Beginning wi th breakfas t , s t ra ightening up t he k i t chen ,getting ready for Sunday School and teaching, then Church, and as I am incharge of after Church Teas, I hurried home at 12:15 to prepare luncheondishes and return for fellowship lunch at 1 .M. Then home at 2:15 P.M. andfinal preparation fo r the l i t t le colo ured ( B l a c k ) Sunday Sch oo l a t 3 5 3 0 , w h i c hI am in charge of."

She didn't go any further, for of course it was church at night. Her next writing was Tuesday, Jjpe 11th .

I am at the Bible Book shop. Have just put in a new window display suid amnow going to do my book work. The men at the Mission have decided to sell theBook Store and then I will go back to being a full time secretary for CentralAfrica Mission .

Ivan Martin is in charge of the African work here and he is going on fiu:=lough in July. Dale Marshall has asked me to help in supervising of thiswork. He says I will be a great help with my knowledge of Shona in tjrpingmaterials for the African Evangelist, as well as making the Shona tapes. Ofcourse I am delighted at getting b a c k to the Shona work, even though it isnot in my beloved bush.

    I am in ch a rge o f t he co loured Sunday S c h o o l (Asians , Colo ureds , Afr icans ,Indians, e t c . ) . T h e y range f rom 3 ears t o 12 years o f a g e . I t is a greatchallenge to me, as I have Moslem, Hindu, Catholic, and "nothing" childrenas far as Christianity is concerned. Can you inagine what a grave respon-

    sibiiity-I--feel-for these-little o n e s - , — a n d ^ - I - a s k - t h a t — y o u prs^ for me as Iseek to guide t h e m in telling them of our blessed Saviour Jesus Christ.

Also another door has opened f o r ma. For some reason the coloured, non-Afr i cans , who are not accepted by e i t he r Blacks or Whi t e s have been com ingto me for comfort. This is a tremendous opening for telling of the sourceof peace and contentment that can only be found in Jesus.

    Now, Fay, abou t t h e hosp i t a l . One of t h e Afr ican Ev ange li s t f rom S i n o i ahas relatives near the Mission, so he made a very dangerous trip right toC h i d a m o y o . and Church are standing, however the windows are broken. The houses are

    intact, e x c e p t for broken windows. As this report is already two monthsold, t he aux i l ia ry f o r c e s h a v e m o v e d o n and the t e r ro r is t s are again c o m i n gheavily into the U m m g w earea (Chidamoyo) ." continued..

    October HEVSLETTER 1979

    Dear Christian Friends:

    la oar last letter from Miss Judy, Ae rote do not know if I ill get ont a newsl e t t e r f o r October^ as I real ly do n o t hare a m c h t o repor t at t h i s t i n e . Though t I m i ^ ^ tjast hang on until something definite comes of the Conference in London".

    Therefore, we thought it a rery good time to explain the situation in Rhodesia, asJ u d y h a s explained ts as in oar personal correspondence, and a l so t o express oa r thanksand apprecia t ion f o r your l oTing r e sponse to J u d y s needs .

The new Prime Minister of Rhodesia is a dedicated Christian. He has been in London

    t ry ing t o draw up a cons t i tu t ion , so t h a t t h e Western World w i l l approve of t he newlyformed government and lift the mbargo which has been having a evastating effect onRhodesia. We quote from Judys letter "the Patriotic Front Terrorist failed to meet thedead l ine se t b y Britian, so t h e Bri t ish governmen t has s tar ted nego t i a t ions wi th BishopBfuzowera a n y w a y. If t h e P. F. remain out o f t h e t a lks there can on ly be an increase inthe war of terror, death and destruction".

    J u d y con t inued wi th "the t e r ro r i s t hav e begun a t t ack ing the econom y of o u r c o u n t r y,as t h e y t h r ea t ened . J u s t r e c en t l y they burned t en f a rms and murdered seve ra l f a rmers and

their wives within fifteen miles of Sinoia".

"John Pemberton, missionary in Chiredse, and Ted lurlbert, a visiting minister fromSouthern California, were on Tictoria Road headed for Salisbury, in a convoy, and theywere ambushed . Fo r tuna te ly, t h ey were in the second o a r and w e r e n o t hurt, bu t t he d r ive rof the first ear was badly injured".

    This is j u s t a min i pictiire^ t h a t w e share w i t h yot^ of t h e w a r t h a t is g o i n g on inR h o d e s i a . H o w e v e r, Judy has grea t f a i t h in praye r, as she prays f o r Ood's w i l l here,a l o n g w i t h t h e p r ay e r s of t h e o t h e r ou t s t and ing Chris t ian leaders in g o v e r n m e n t , plusall the o t h e r pe o p le w h o are pray ing fo r peace , inc luding J u d y s f r iends in t h e U n i t e dStates.

    N o w a f ew wo rds of grat i tude. T h e F l o c k s hav e been singly marvelous about fi l l ing

    b o x e s w i t h " g o o d i e s " , as J u d y calls t h e m , and sending t h e m to her. If yo u reca l l he rlast News le t t e r, you can see t h a t e v e r y ' 'bite" is being used t o br ing Cluristian fe l lowship to our Brothers and Sisters in that war torn country.

    Then we want to t h a n k y o n f o r your response to Judys specia l needs list. Amongs tothers , th e So-G etters Class, th e Pace Set t ers Class , 9 : ^ 5 Junior Qirls Class , th eKdlinds , P i c k e t t Circle, and Helen Kaiser, t o t he se w o say a specia l "thank y o u " . Woknow there are others that have not come to our attention and we wish to thank you also.

    This special needs l i s t a re th ings needed for J u d y s Sunday S c h o o l Class of childrenof different Nat ional i t ies cal led colo ured (Indians , Orienta ls , e tc) . These are no taccepted by ei ther Blacks or Whi tes . J u d y h a s done t h i s o n her o w n , t each ing everySunday af ternoon a t 3 : 0 0 P. M . , approximately 30 chi ldren. To u w h o hav e responded, c amc o u n t yourselves as being miss io nar ies t o t hese chi ldred, these w h o have no one elseto tell them our Lord Jesus. Isn't this exc i t i z ig?

    Of course it t akes a whi le f o r th e packages t o r each th e i r dest inat ion, bu t uponth eir arr ival , J u d y wi l l be sending y o u a t h a n k y o u " n o t e .
