Welcome to Owatonna Parks and Recreation Spring 2015

Snow and cold may be our reality right now, but here at Parks & Recreation, we’re looking forward to green grass and sunny skies. Spring really is right around the corner. We’re very excited to have had a few new programs already (Darn Near Full Moon Festival and Sledding Party), some coming up soon (Future Sports Camp) and some more in the works for 2015...look for those to be released in the summer brochure. We’re also bringing back NEW favorites too! Boat & Water Safety Class is April 4th, and Bark & Rec and e Munchkin Market will both be held April 25th. We are always looking for new and exciting ventures…if you have suggestions, please let us know. As always, we take pride in our customer service, and two of our goals this past year have been communication and registration. Our communication plan includes updates to our website, www.ci.owatonna.mn.us/parksrecreation, to make navigation easier. We have a weekly article in the Owatonna People’s Press each Saturday, while the SeniorPlace article runs each Wednesday. Tune into KRFO on Tuesday and ursday mornings at 8:40 a.m. for our radio shows. Be sure to like us on Facebook as well...Park & Rec, Brooktree, SeniorPlace and River Springs Water Park all have pages. A reminder that the City of Owatonna has eliminated the non-resident fees through an agreement with Steele County. All citizens within the county will pay the same fee for recreation programs. Only participants living outside Steele County will pay the outside player fee. Please note that adult and rental fees listed that are payable to Owatonna Park and Recreation

include sales tax, while youth programs and lessons do not charge sales tax. SeniorPlace Memberships for 2015 are available for just $37.41! Our Partnership program has expanded to over 50 local businesses…check out the SeniorPlace page for details and participating businesses.

Brooktree Memberships for 2015 are also available! e course has had many upgrades, as well as remodeling in the clubhouse. See the Brooktree page for rates and course amenities.

It’s never too soon to reserve a pavilion for your special event. Call the o ce and we’d be glad to nd the perfect venue for your graduation, family reunion, birthday party, company outing or other event. We hope you are able to make time to take advantage of your parks, trails, facilities and programs during this wonderful time of year! We welcome your comments and suggestions about our facilities and programs. Let us know how we are doing. “ e Bene ts are Endless” as “Your Best Investment” is your Parks and Recreation Department!

Our recreation program offers a variety of leisure options for youth and adults with disabilities. We provide an adaptive format as well as opportunities for inclusion. Our policy within the Therapeutic Recreation program is to plan for the person fi rst, the disability second, and to encourage the independent pursuit of personal leisure interests. Our goal is to make recreation/leisure choices available to everyone, and our objective is to accommodate individuals with necessary adaptations so they may participate as fully as their non-disabled peers.

Membership Benefi ts:•A newsletter six times a year, providing a calendar of trips, special events,

weekly scheduled activities and program information.•Transportation to local activities for members within city limits, enrolled in the Night Club program.•Experienced Park and Recreation staff facilitating programs and events.•Discount on membership fees to the West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center•Access to resources and agencies such as ADD, Special Olympics, Project

ABLE, and other advocates for persons with disabilities.•Scholarships and fi nancial assistance available upon request.

Inclusion in Youth ProgramsYouth with disabilities or health concerns are encouraged to participate in youth sports, aquatics, trips and summer programs. The inclusion policy of this program provides all children registered to participate with an equal advantage. Adaptive equipment, program modifi cations and other accommodations may be used to assist the individual as needed. Individualized consultation with parents and coordination with the coach/instructor help make the transition possible. In addition, all coaches, aquatic staff and summer staff receive resource information for working with the child in their training sessions. Requests for one-to-one assistance is provided when possible. When enrolling your child in sports and other programs, please let staff know of medical conditions or other special needs. Night ClubThis social group is designed for adults 22 years and older, who have developmental disabilities and mental health issues. This group is an extension of Teen Club and functions similarly. LIFELIFE (Leisure Is for Everyone) is a leisure education program designed for individuals with disabilities, starting at age 20. Members of the LIFE group learn skills necessary to make the most of their leisure time. While keeping involved in recreation activities and pursuing new friendships, they also learn to plan and organize their daily schedules outside of work using a personal planner. Our goals are to explore personal leisure interests and community resources; develop an understanding of self-advocacy and personal independence, and learn the rewards that come from volunteering. We encourage members to attend without staff, if possible. This group serves as a transition program between Teen Club and Night Club, and members will learn the importance of choosing and planning leisure options.

• Meets weekly, Wednesdays 4:30-6:00pm, locations include SeniorPlace and other sites
