Registration is simple & easy! To register online, go to http://parksandrec.snco.us and click the OnlineRegistration icon.

Forms can be mailed, walked in,phoned in, or faxed to any Parks andRecreation Facility.

Registration VerificationParticipants will not be contacted unlessthere is a problem or question with theregistration form or your program haschanged, cancelled or combined. If youdo not hear from us, you are enrolled.

CancellationPrograms may be combined or cancelleddue to insufficient enrollment. In eitherevent you will be notified by phone ormail for your request: acceptance, transfer,credit or refund.

REFUND POLICYA full refund or account credit will beissued for programs or shelterreservations cancelled by Parks andRecreation.

Registrations cancelled by the participantat least seven days prior to the programstart date will receive a 90% refund oraccount credit. A 50% refund will beissued if the Department is notified withinseven (7) days of the start of the classby participant. No refund will be issuedfor any reason from the halfway pointof a program session to conclusion.

Athletic refunds will be issued with a 10%service charge fee if the Athletic Officeis notified at least twenty-one days priorto the initial start date of the leagueseason. Refunds after this time will beissued with a 40% service charge.

Shelter reservation refunds will be issuedwith a 10% service fee for reservationscancelled with a fourteen (14) daynotice.

All refunds will follow the CountyTreasurer’s bill-paying schedule and beissued by County check. There willbe no cash or credit card refunds.

A $30 service charge will beassessed for all checks returnedby the bank.

Are you looking for a well-supervised and safe environmentfor your children this summer? We offer a variety offun-filled, interactive and educational summer camps. Thedays are busy with arts, crafts, exploring nature, field trips,sports, special events, swimming, cooking and more. Camperswill learn new skills, develop friendships and have anexciting summer.

Registration Information• Registration begins Tuesday, March 3;• Parents can reserve the weeks of camps

needed (anywhere from 1 to 11 weeks);• Registration fee:

o $20 per week deposit is applied to theweekly fee and is non-refundable.

o Balance due of the weekly fee must bepaid two weeks prior to the start of eachweek of camp.

• KDHE forms must be turned in prior to the firstday of camp;

• Registration and payments can be made at mostParks and Recreation facilities.

Summer is approaching and it is time to plan for an exciting seasonof fun and friends. Passport to Adventure is an outdoor camp, with“No Child Left Inside,” designed around nine different weeklythemes that will keep campers interested and active all summerlong.

Two nutritional snacks, beverages andadmission to special trips and tours areincluded in the fee.

OPTION l $100 per week (includes $20 perweek non refundable registration fee).Campers may be brought to the CrestviewShelter House after 7:15 am and picked upNO LATER than 5:30pm. See ParentHandbook for further camp information.

Celebrating our 34th year of operation!! “No Child LeftInside.” We’re getting back to good old-fashioned funin the great outdoors. We keep really busy doing awide variety of challenging and interesting units: sportsand games, crafts, lots of silly camp songs, creativedramatics, canoeing, archery and even roller skatingonce a week. And most importantly, we will SWIM everyday that pools are open. Many of our camp staff willbe returning this summer with their crazy nicknames.

PARENTS MAY CHOOSE FROM TWO (2) OPTIONS:

OPTION l $110 per week (includes $20 per week nonrefundable registration fee). Bus transportation will beprovided from three of the neighborhood community centers.Children may be brought to the community center after7:15am and must be picked up no later than 5:30pm. A busschedule is included in the Parent Handbook. Times willvary at each community center (Central Park, Crestview andOakland). Please designate at registration which center youwill utilize as a pick-up point/drop off point. Enrollment islimited at each center, due to the amount of available spaceon the bus.

Minimum enrollment must be met at each location. We reservethe right to eliminate a drop-off point, if the minimumenrollment is not met.

OPTION II $85 per week (includes $20 per week nonrefundable registration fee). Children may be dropped offat 9:30 am and picked up no later than 4 pm at Big GageShelter.

Campers will participate in team games and activities, crafts andprojects, swimming, team and individual sports, fieldtrips and guestspeakers. Horse Camp (ages 8-14)Topeka Round-Up Club7843 SW 37th St.224-3280

Horse Camp is an intensive five-day program where campers learnabout riding skills, safety, etiquette, grooming, tacking up,horsemanship, leading, medical tips, basic feeding, different breedsand colors, with lots of outdoor fun and adventure. Special guestsmay include veterinarians, farriers, and special trainers. This programhas been in existence for 17 years, formerly with Parks andRecreation of Topeka. Parents and/or guardians must providetransportation to and from the Topeka Round-Up Club and mustdisclose any special accommodations or concerns child might havei.e., medications, challenges, concerns, attention, sight or walkingissues. Parent or guardian must sign consent and release form priorto first day of camp.

All of the camps offered by the athletics division staff and instructors will challenge kidsmentally and physically. Your child will learn daily how to improve as a competitor butmore importantly as a person. American Red Cross CPR & First Aid $70This program will help participants recognizeand respond appropriately to cardiac,

breathing and first aid emergencies. Inthis program, students will learn how togive immediate care to a suddenly injuredor ill person until more advanced medical

personnel arrive and take over. Aftersuccessful course completion, participants willreceive a 2 year certification.July 11 Sat 8am-noon BFAC

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training $175Interested in becoming a lifeguard? This class will teach you theskills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond quickly andeffectively to emergencies. Successful candidates will be certifiedin ARC Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and ARCFirst Aid. To be eligible for the course, participants must be at least15 years of age and complete the following prerequisites:

• Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath controland rhythmic breathing

• Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs• Swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to

World’s Largest Swim LessonWe broke the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest

Swim Lesson in 2013 and 2014. Can you help us do it again?Join us at the pool while we collaborate with pools across

the world to host another simultaneous swim lesson tobreak the record of 36,564 that was set in 2014. Thisprogram is designed to help build awareness about thevital importance of teaching children to swim to helpprevent drowning which is the second leading causeof unintended, injury-related death for childrenbetween the ages of 1-14. Swim LessonsMonday-Thursday for 2 weeks$50/SessionParent/Tot: Parent and child learn together to increase the child’scomfort level in the water. Participants will build a foundation ofbasic skills such as arm and leg movements and breath control.

Preschool: Children ages 4-5 learn age appropriate water safetyand swimming skills to increase their comfort level in and aroundthe water. Child must be able to leave parent willingly, followdirections, and behave appropriately in a class setting.

• Level 1:Water Entry/Exit, Face Submersion, Back Float,Arm/Leg Action

• Level 2: Bobbing, Retrieve Submerged Objects, FrontFloat

• Level 3: Rotary Breathing, Jellyfish/Tuck Float, ChangeFloat Direction

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills: Orients children to the aquaticenvironment and helps students feel comfortable in the water.Students learn basic water safety rules, blowing bubbles, submergehead, retrieve a submerged object, and floating while addingarm and leg movement.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills: Gives participants success withfundamental skills learned in level 1. Students learn basic watersafety rules, bobs, full submersion while holding breath, using theirarms and legs while floating, and gliding on their front and backin the water.

Level 3 Stroke Development: Front crawl and elementarybackstroke are emphasized in this level. Students are introducedto flutter, dolphin, breaststroke, and scissors kicks. Students learnsurvival float, treading water, and diving from sitting and kneelingpositions.

Level 4 Stroke Improvement: Develop confidence in the strokesand practice skills learned in level 3. Breaststroke, butterfly, andsidestroke are introduced while front crawl, back crawl, andelementary backstroke are refined. Participants learn survivalswimming and open turns.

Level 5 Stroke Refinement: Strokes from level 4 are refined andstudents swim longer distances. Flip turns, shallow angle dives fromthe side, and surface dives are introduced.

Level 6 Skill Proficiency: Students refine the strokes to swim withease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.Options prepare participants for more advanced courses like WaterSafety Instructor courses or other aquatic activities like competitivediving or swimming.

Private Lessons: Fee $150 Individual lessons geared toward theneed of the participant.

Adult Lessons: Learn to swim, hone your skills, or utilize your skillsto become more fit. Three levels will be offered geared towardthe needs of the participant: Swimming Basics, Skill and StrokeRefinement; Fitness Swimming.

Instructor Aide (I.A.): Students begin to develop the skills necessaryto instruct swimming lessons through hands-on experience with thecertified swim lesson instructors.

Jr. Lifeguard: The first step toward an awesome job as a lifeguard.Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to successfullycomplete the ARC Lifeguard program upon turning 15.Recommended for ages 11-15.

SchedulesWhen creating league schedules all requests andconditions are evaluated to devise the optimal scheduleprior to its release. SCPR reserves the right to change,alter, or decline requests and we require a five (5) daynotice along with a $30 administration fee for anyschedule alteration (paid only by requestor). Teams mayhave to play doubleheaders, play early and/or lategames, travel within the community, accept the current onlineschedule or even forfeit. Your opponent should be contactedfirst about your request, then at both the other team’s and ourdiscretion the schedule may or may not be edited depending onother conditions.

Athletic Youth StandardsEnrollment for your son or daughter in our program requires youto fill out and sign a registration form, pay at the time of registration,travel within the community, and parents are required to fullyunderstand and accept our Code of Ethics. Our staff, coaches,officials, and volunteers are held accountable so we must expectthe same from parents. Sign up individually and we will placeyour child on a team. Teams are formed according to only thoseregistrations received. SCPR may or may not accept registrationsto fill teams or leagues. No guaranteed placement of individualson teams, however, we do try to create teams based on locality,schools, neigh-borhoods, and coach preferences. View our refundpolicy prior to registering your child. SCPR reserves the right tomodify the sports environment to benefit the youth participating.Our goal is to provide a positive sports environment to youthduring their developmental years. Parents are highly encouragedto attend any coaches meetings.

Attention Parents/ParticipantsA $10 service fee is added to any participant registering after thedeadline for any LEAGUE SPORT including but not limited to:soccer, t-ball, flag football, machine pitch, hockey, baseball,basketball, volleyball or softball. Placement after the deadline isnot guaranteed.

Be a CoachParents are needed to volunteer coach various sportsthroughout the year. We will provide resources to assist youin communicating to participants and parents. One childreceives free participation for your time. Volunteers are askedto submit information for a SCPR volunteer background checkand attend a coach’s meeting prior to being allowed tocoach youth sports. Unified Softball is an integrateddesigned to bring people with and without

developmental disabilities together to play ball. This is arecreational league. Teams will be organized and a schedulemailed out to all athletes after registration is complete. Pleasebe sure your mailing information is correct when registering.Every effort will be made to keep people on the same teamfrom year to year. Parks and Recreation will provide bats,balls, tees and helmets. Players must bring their own glovesand drinks. Game times will be 6pm and 7:05pm, and allgames are played at Felker 1 & 2. GARDENSThe Botanical Gardenat Old Prairie Town wasestablished in 1963.There are approximately500 varieties of treesand shrubs in the 2½

acre garden. Inaddition, there

are about5,000 annual

flowers plantedeach year. Thegarden includes many plants requiringshade as well as many unusualspecimen plants. Three water gardensare featured in the park, above groundwater garden in the front yard as wellas Anna’s Place. Anna’s Placeconsists of two pools, a stream, bridge,gazebo and waterfall. It is surroundedby many varieties of plant material.Also a pondless water feature is

located by the entrance to the gardenas well as 1,500 feet of stamped sidewalk

that meanders through the garden. Manyweddings are held in the garden each year.

The garden is open from 8am until duskand is handicap accessible. For more

Potwin Drug Store (maximum 25 people)The drugstore/soda fountain includes original soda fixtures froma drugstore that stood for 75 years at 5th and Washburn in thehistoric Potwin area in Topeka. Today, ornate walnut cabinets withdozens of tiny drawers and glass fronts line both sides of thewalls. A pharmacist’s counter in the back displays antique mortarsand pestles and old-fashioned bottles and jars. A turn-of-the-century Wurlitzer jukebox, original to the drug store, occupies onecorner.

WARD CABIN HEARTH MEALSThis is one of the most popular, unique meals served at Old PrairieTown, so make your reservations early! Meals are served at firesidetables in the Ward cabin, and diners are treated to special hearth-cooking demonstrations with a side dish of history, all providedby costumed volunteers. These family styled meals are offeredfrom October 15 through March 15 with reservations forgroups of 12-18.

The par-70 layout at Lake Shawnee Golf Course measures over 6300 yards from the backtees. It was designed by Larry W. Flatt in 1972 and updated by Craig Schreiner. Many holes ofthe golf course bring together breathtaking views and the challenges of playing alongsideLake Shawnee. The manageable length of the golf course and affordable anytime rates makeLake Shawnee Golf Course your best choice for outdoor recreation.

Forbes is a 9-Hole par-36 layout on the southeast side of Shawnee County measuring 3,253yards from the back tees. The course was designed by Bob E. Baldock in 1962. The courseoffers a relaxed atmosphere for golfers of all skill levels, and has 3 sets of tees on a links stylelayout. The course can be challenging for the experienced, yet easy enough for beginners.

Cypress Ridge Golf Course offers a great challenge for golfers of all ages and skill levels.With 6,200 rolling yards of excellent golf Cypress Ridge is located on the western edge of theCapital City. It is conveniently located approximately one and half miles west of the Wanamakercorridor just south of 21st street.

Relive old memories and create new ones. The mini-train is anintegral part of the sights and sounds of Gage Park. Follow amile-long scenic course through the heart of the park, as the engineerenlightens you on the history of the park, and the many attractionsthat are here for you and your family to enjoy. Then enjoy a rideon our unique vintage carousel, which is located west of the BlaisdellFamily Aquatic Center. This grand old carousel was built in 1908and houses a Wurlitzer style band organ. Why not bring yourlunch and enjoy listening to the music from the band organ, orenjoy the VonRohr Victorian Garden adjacent to the carousel?Visit our concession stand located at the train depot.
