Greetings from the Director! We have the best deal on the planet going on right now with season passes at the Aquatic Center 10% off the regular price until the day before the pool opens. Pur-chase yours no later than Thursday, June 12, to take advantage of this offer! See page 6 for the math.

We had a successful first-time 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament this past month and we’re following it up with more basketball activities this summer. You can play league water basketball at the pool, participate in an eight-week training class or a three-day intense camp. We’re partnering with Whitman’s men’s basketball coach, Stephen Garnett, who owns Overtime Training. Check out his bio on pg. 27. No need to leave town to get quality basketball programs!

Something else new at the pool is Shallow Water Aerobics, suited for those who are at a moderate fitness level but who want to improve strength, flexibility and cardio-vascular endurance. If you’re looking for more intensity, try Deep Water Aerobics or Extreme Water Running.

Movies In The Park is one week longer this year and we’re once again offering spon-sorships for this very well-loved and well-attended event. We estimate our crowd at between 300 and 500 each week. If you’d like to be part of this event, you can participate at several different donor levels. Contact Lisa Patrick, 541-276-0228.

The Summer Parks Adventure Camp is now a fee-based activity but we know there is a need to support that cost for our community’s low-income families. We sent a flyer out through schools encouraging those who qualify to submit their paper-erwork early so they would be ready to register as soon as the class opens. These classes fill up fast!

Temperatures have warmed up and we’re off and running with seasonal tasks. We opened up winterized park restrooms, mowers are headed out to parks around town, picnic tables will soon be taken out of winter storage, and the ball fields are being groomed for play. I hope this finds all of you thinking about getting outside and enjoying spring; summer isn’t too far behind!

A message from the coaches: All levels of gymnastics improve a child’s body, mind and coordination. We, as gymnastics coaches, seek to teach gymnasts to control fear and frustration while working hard to learn new skills and children gain a great sense of accomplishment when they do so. Flexibility and coordination gained from gym-nastics makes for better all-around athletes in other sports.

Sessions conclude with a demonstration for family.

claSS locationS All classes are held in the lower level of the Pendleton Recre-ation Center (except those noted at Eastern Oregon Gymnastics Academy or EOGA, 1819 Westgate, Pendleton). Please enter from the Emigrant (south) side of the build-ing, and not through the gymnasium; watch for sign to “Activity Room” on wall. This will help us to avoid distracting other classes in session.

youth/teen activitiessummer adventure campgradeS 2 tHrU 6 (in the fall) fee: $15/week

Check out this boredom busting opportunity for children entering 2nd - 6th grades (in the fall), or ages 8-12, to participate in a day-camp setting with six weeks to choose from! Register for one week or all six. If you register for all six weeks in advance, you will receive the sixth week free. If you call the office to register, staff will apply a manual credit during registration. if you choose to register online, you will need to contact the office to request an adjustment. If you register for six weeks and subsequently cancel one week, there will be no refund for the first cancelled week. Refund eligibility begins in the event of a second week’s cancellation. This camp usually ends up with a long waiting list so register right away.

Camp will be open from 9 am - 3 pm, Mo- Th, with lunch provided by Sodexo through the Pendleton school lunch program. An afternoon snack will also be provided. Mondays and Wednesdays mornings include active games such as tag, Ollie Ollie Over, frisbee, dodge-ball, and kickball or whiffle ball. We will stay cool in the afternoon with quieter craft and science projects in the shade, like making slime, survivor challenges and scavenger hunts, beading and clay creations. Tuesdays have a morning activity and an afternoon trip to the Aquatic Center (please send $4 with your child for admission or a season pass).Thursdays we visit the library and the Helen McCune Gymnasium.

Last summer we assigned themes to each week. We elected not to do that this year because it didn’t allow us the flexibility to respond to weather and other events. However, we will have a full calendar of activities so it doesn’t really matter which week you choose!

We strive to hire education major college students for our park leaders since campmakes a wonderful practical work experience as they pursue a teaching degree. If they have not al-ready been CPR certified they receive some basic training from Parks and Recreation staff.

This camp focuses on teaching the fundamentals of the game from the physical as-pect as well as the mental. Each drill will be broken down so the student will develop a clear understanding of the exact reasoning behind it. Overtime Train-ing camps are all co-ed and like none you have ever attended. They are physically and mentally challenging, but provide each player with the proper tools to elevate their game. These camps develop individual skills with one-on-one competition or scrimmag-ing. Intensity of camp will increase with each age group.

While two hours may seem lengthy for 3rd and 4th graders Coach Garnett has found re-peated success at this age level when keeping the kids BUSY!

Coach Stephen Garnett is an Assistant Coach of the Whitman College Men’s Basketball program and owner of Overtime Training. For more info on Stephen, read a brief bio below. We are very excited to have his level of expertise available here locally.

Stephen played four years at Northern Arizona University (Division I), two years with the Arizona Stars (AAU) and four years of high school basketball. He has coached many different high school and college teams. His philosophy is that Overtime Train-ing is for young people who are MOTIVATED and COMMITTED to become the best basketball player they can be. “Overtime Training will be the hardest, most intense work you have ever put into developing your basketball game...and because of it, you will see a huge improvement in your game.” Jayson, age 11, said, “Stephen is really cool. He’s always encouraging me even if I mess up, and fun to be around. Work outs are hard but he makes me want to work harder. I’ve played basketball for several years, but I didn’t really enjoy it until I started working for Stephen. I was an average player before, but now I am much better.”
