Registration Opens

March 17

It’s hard to believe that Spring 2010 is here

already. The signs abound, with the whales

returning, bear sightings and sounds of the

frogs. With the nice weather out (at the time

of writing), I’ve seen lots of people out enjoy-

ing the beach, the MUP, the golf course and the

ball fi elds. Great to see everyone getting active

outdoors!

We are really happy to welcome Laura

back! Laura has done some awe-

some work with our team and she brings lots

of fun energy to our programming. Laura will

be working with the After School group and on

special events and fi lming permits. Welcome

back Laura!

The team at the community school/gym

offi ce has been really busy with afternoon

and evening programs. The turn out to the

drop in gym sports has been fantastic, great

to see everyone getting out and getting active!

We recently conducted a survey of a variety of

users, and it was clear our evening gym users

want more access. While we were pretty sure

this was the case, we thank each of you for

providing your input. We’re working on it.

Spring is a great time to be active outdoors.

Whether it’s out on the water, walking the

MUP or the beach, or gardening in the sun,

Tofi no does have lots of inexpensive ways to

be active. Don’t forget we have some loaner

equipment to help you in your efforts to be

more physically active. We hope that you fi nd

some opportunities in this brochure to get out

and be active!

DID YOU KNOW??You can now register for pro-grams at the District Offi ce, or at the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Offi ce. Both loca-tions will have all of the necessary registration information you may need. While the District Offi ce is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday, the Gym Offi ce will also be open well into the evenings Monday to Friday, when it opens later in September. We hope this makes it convenient for you to reg-ister in advance of our programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full, to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff/instructor changes should we need to expand the program.

Sorry, the course is full:Some classes fi ll quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes.

Changed your plans?A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal in-formation prior to the course start date unless specifi ed otherwise during registration. There is a form available at the District Offi ce to

apply for credits/refunds. It is ex-tremely helpful if you have a copy of your receipt to attach to your application.

What?! You had to cancel it?Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors are cancelled if everyone waits until the last min-ute to register (think “Tofi no time”). Register early to avoid disappoint-ment for yourself and others.

New Program Idea?Tofi no Parks and Recreation is al-ways looking for new programs. If you have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Offi ce. We always have a need for instructors, coaches and volunteers!

Program Minimum AgesFor the enjoyment of all partici-pants, children must be the correct age prior to the fi rst class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specifi c reasons.

AccessibilityWe believe that recreation pro-grams should be accessible to all children in our community regard-less of ability to pay. If you fi nd it diffi cult to participate in any program because of fi nancial limitations, please speak with one of our staff.

This Spring Program Guide contains program and event information for March, April, May and June 2010.

To register for a program drop-in to

Tofi no’s Municipal Hall or the Community School

gym offi ce, or register by phone at

725-3229.

May is Childcare Month! In honour of Childcare Month, we would like to

say BIG thanks to the wonderful staff who make the Children’s Centre the great place that it is.

The Community Children’s Centre has now been in operation for almost 9 years, and is a

wonderful resource for our community.

We give big kudos to our dedicated and caring full time staff; Fiona, Laura, Amy and Rhonda.

These staff people are the backbone of the cen-tre, gently guiding and assisting, while allowing

and providing for ample opportunities for development.

Of course the kids are the heart of the Centre. We have over 50 children registered as we go to press, with new registration continually coming

in. We are often full, and the Centre is alive with little people.

Helmets for Skiers and BoardersSkiing has evolved into a faster sport than it was 10 years ago, and snowboarding has become very popular. As a result, more skiers and boarders protect themselves by wearing a helmet. During the mid to late1990s, ski helmet sales increased 10-fold in six years. It is no longer as rare to see people wearing helmets on the slopes as it was even a couple of years ago.

Serious head injuries account for less than three per cent of total injuries among skiers and snowboarders, yet they are the leading cause of death, and the injuries can have lifelong conse-quences.

A study of skiers treated for head injuries at a Colorado trauma centre was published in the Octo-ber 2002 issue of The Journal of Trauma. It found that collisions with trees were the most com-mon cause of head injury and were responsible for the most se-vere injuries. Snowboarders were three times more likely to suff er a head injury than skiers.

All funds raised from the event go directly to cover the club’s climbing fees.

Tonquin Beach

Big thanks to a group of hard work-ing volunteers who planted shore pines on the small island in front of Tonquin Beach! There was signifi cant damage done to the foliage over the course of 2009, and the new trees will help improve the stability of the remaining foliage. Please take care to not damage these new seedlings if you visit the island. A suggestion from a local resident is that if you do visit the island, to take a handful of sand with you to help with the erosion issue.

Multi Use Path (MUP)Our much loved multi use path is get-ting some upgrades this year! The fi rst phase will be to improve the safety of the MUP at Sharp Road where the Dolphin Motel is located. Some trees have been removed to make way for the MUP to move off the highway, improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Some site prep work has begun and we look forward to having this section com-pleted this spring.

Survey work has been completed on the section between Bay St, near the

Pacifi c Breeze, and Olsen Road. This is a particularly challenging area for MUP location and we will be looking at a number of options to address the safety issues in this area.

Community GardenWorking with the Tofi no Community Food Initiative and School District 70, we have identifi ed a site at the school for a possible commu-nity garden. The good folks at the Food Initiative table are now tasked with the details on exactly what this could look like. Meanwhile, we have been busy in the Bottom Weeders garden at the school, with lots of welcome help from the students and our volunteer consul-tant extraordinaire Miriam Turner. We have acquired some mason bee cocoons which classes will hatch and deliver to a hive near the garden.

Some classes will be starting in class composting, which will be transferred to a larger composter in the under cover area. Kelly has been working hard on encour-aging the composting program at the school and we want to say a big thank you to the school community for supporting this initiative.

Youth RoomThrough funding from Union of BC Municipalities and the BC School Trustees Association, we are working to transform the mezzanine area into a welcoming usable space for our youth. Included in this transformation is a lounge area with large screen tv, WII Sports, Rockband and computers. Youth input is welcomed and encour-aged! Chat with Evan or Doug if you have any ideas or suggestions.

Community HallAfter a particularly destructive break in at the hall over Christmas, the hall is now alarmed. You must have a code to access the hall. Through funding from BC Hydro through the Tree Canada program, we have planted a number of trees and shrubs in the area that will add some colour and much needed greenery to the surrounds. We have had reports that people are driving too fast up to the hall. Please remember that children are using this facility throughout the week and please drive carefully!

Community Hall Beautifi cationThanks to a $5000 grant from Tree Canada, the Tofi no Community Hall site received some much needed beautifi cation in the form of landscaping. Trina from Ordinary Corner Nursary worked with Parks Staff Theo Fadden to select vegetation suitable for the site. Theo worked in some chilly weather, digging in some not too friendly ground to get this project wrapped up before Christmas. A mix of evergreen and deciduous plants were used, and while some of the deciduous plants and trees don’t look like much now, they promise to look great come spring. Still to be planted on the site once the weather warms up are several rugosa roses.

Transition Towns with Michelle ColoussiSaturday March 20th, 1:00 – 3:00 pmLong Beach Lodge, Tofi no (refreshments served)

The Transition Town Movement is taking off globally as a means of engaging whole communities in becoming more self-reliant, and more resilient. The lessons from this movement are projected to help scale up “energy descent” and decrease our reliance on fossil fuels in the next fi ve years.

In the last year, since Michelle Coulossi began delivering training for transition workshops, we have seen 13 Tran-sition Towns offi cially designated by the UK International Transition Network. There are at least 30 other groups working with the model across the country. Hear about the principles and approaches behind this model and why it seems to be capturing the head, the hands, and the hearts of citizens. Join Michelle Coloussi and the Rain-coast Education Society to learn more and have all your questions answered. This event is part of the Raincoast Sustainable Living Program Speaker Series. Thank you to Long Beach Lodge for co-sponsoring this event!

These photos, together with construction photos, will be displayed around the inside of the treatment plant. You will get to go on a virtual tour of the Bay Street pump house using the internal camera at Bay Street. Tofi no Public Works will also have a large schematic drawing of the District of Tofi no water distribution system that can be used to explain all the remote portions of the infrastructure. “COMMUNITY IN THE SCHOOL, SCHOOL IN THE COMMUNITY”

A partnership between the Wickaninnish Community School Society and the Tofi no Recreation Commission

As we continue to streamline our service delivery, we are also working on some internal restructuring. Tara Taggart has been busy evaluating the results of our fi rst survey and will be reporting back in mid March. We will also be surveying different fac-tions of our community over the next month in order to identify any gaps in service delivery, and to hear what’s working and what needs improve-ment. Please help us to be the best we can be, and give us your input as the opportunities arise.

From the research Tara has done to date, it would appear that there is some confusion as to what exactly we are doing. Essentially, we have combined the operations of the parks and recreation department with the operations of the Wickaninnish Com-munity School Society (WCSS). The society was running programs such as the After School Program, pottery classes, Bottom Weeders garden, and other programs based out of the school. By combining the two organizations, we eliminate much of the duplication (eg. 1 volunteer organization instead of two, one set of payroll, one set of basketball

equipment, etc), and can better share resources (eg Rec van, offi ce supplies and equipment, venue space, etc), while we also improve service de-livery (eg registration at two venues instead of one, endeavouring to look at all programming to reduce con-fl icts, allocation of staffi ng to better address the needs, etc). And since we began the initiative in 2008, we have obtained outside funding so that there has been NO additional cost to the tax payer.

As we move forward, we are looking at identifying what our community needs to be truly healthy; physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectu-ally healthy. So we need you to think about what your needs are in all of these areas as we approach you for your ideas in helping us move for-ward. Thank you to those of you who completed the fi rst survey!!

Tuff Girls ProgramOur own Kelly Alexander has been leading the Tuff Girls program every Thursday after school. Each session starts with a healthy snack, chatting, laughing and a question that is put in the special girl club box. Its a time where girls can be girls and just have a laugh or discuss topics that are important to them. After that it is on to the focus event of the day. Some of our events so far have been a DIY Spa day, A Studio Art / Fashion Tour, Surfi ng with Surf Sister Surf School, and Yoga.Upcoming activities will include Pottery, Photography, Sports Day and lots, lots more! To get involved with the Tuff Girls program stop by the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Offi ce.

Got Cleats? Do you have old cleats that won’t fi t your child next season? Please consider giving them to our Soccer Cleat Exchange Program.

In order to make our children’s soccer programs as accessible as pos-sible, we have a collection of used soccer cleats and shin pads that we both loan out and give away.

If you child has outgrown their cleats or pads, please consider giving them to this program. If we have a larger size that fi ts your child, you are welcome to take them. If not you can rest assured that the equip-ment will fi nd a deserving home.

You can drop equipment off at the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Offi ce or at Tofi no’s Municipal Hall.

Remembering JohnJohn Bradford served on the Tofi no Recreation Commission in the late

‘80s/early 90s. He was very much involved in our community and had his hand in innumerable projects and initiatives.

His sense of humour, fair and calm demeanour, and the fact he could always be counted on, are all very much missed. Our hearts go out to Dianne, Roz, Josh, Chris and Clarissa.
