PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“The whole Israelite community grumbled …” Exodus One of the worst aspects of human life is the fact that all of us can sink into the dark and negative realm of complaining. We get so lost in a dismal view of reality. The interest-ing fact about this, is that it reveals that all of us are longing to be happy, and anything that gets in the way of this hurts us profoundly. We long for happiness, we long for peace. We were made for this by God. We long to be instruments of life, not death.

“Put on the new self …” Ephesians When we are good to others, we experience the joy of eternity. It is our calling! We need to draw close to Christ, since He is the Way, the Truth, the Life. In Him, we find the Grace to overcome all obstacles to peace and true joy. We must walk toward Him, every day. We must go to the Eucharist, there lies all the Grace we long for. The miracle of the Eucharist is the source of all miracles!

“The Lord gave them bread from Heaven …” Psalm 78

Monsignor Lorenzo

Our Lady School News

The Assump on of Mary is one of the four Marian Dogmas that Catholics must believe. The reason the va-lidity of the doctrine can be trusted is that it rests on the founda on of the teaching authority of the Catholic Church. Catholics did not “invent” the doctrine of the Assump on when Pope Pius XII officially defined it in 1950. All the Pope was doing was making clear that this teaching was always true and part of the deposit of faith for centuries. How do we know this? Because the Church’s liturgy included the Assump on from the earli-est mes. We have a powerful intercessor in heaven in Mary, who precedes all of us who look forward to life in the new heaven and the new earth in a glorified humani-ty of body and soul. We close with a prayer asking for that intercession: “Remember, Virgin Mother of God, when you walk in the presence of the Lord, to speak well of us.” Amen

ARE YOU HUNGRY OR THIRSTY? If you have ever been on a diet or if you have fasted, you know the feeling of being hungry. Re-ducing our consump on of food leaves us with hun-ger pangs that are hard to ignore. Of course, this type of hunger pales in comparison with those who truly lack the nourishment they need. Some lack drinkable water. Their thirst is unimaginable to peo-ple who simply turn on a tap from which fresh wa-ter flows. There is another kind of hunger and thirst that is part of the human experience. Many of us hunger for a deep rela onship with God. This spir-itual hunger is some mes not conscious, un l we are a en ve to it. The Israelites in the desert and the people who followed Jesus across the sea expe-rienced a flash of insight that changed them. Sud-denly, their hunger was about more than food for their physical sustenance. They became aware of their spiritual thirst, which only God can quench. What spiritual hunger do you recognize? THIRST QUENCHED, WE BECOME THIRSTY Once we become a uned to our great longing for God, we grow in trust that Jesus is the bread of life who fills us with God’s goodness. Assured that we need never hunger again, our faith leads us to thirst—for jus ce, mercy, or care for those who are on the peripheries, and for an ever-greater rela on-ship with God and within the Chris an community. With this spiritual growth, we recognize that we must act in order to meet the needs of those who are physically hungry or thirsty, and that we may have the opportunity to lead others to Jesus, the bread from heaven that gives life to the world. In what ways is Jesus your bread of life? How are you called to provide bread, physical or spiritual, to oth-ers? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

TIENES HAMBRE O SED? Si alguna vez te has puesto a dieta o has ayuna-do, sabes cómo se siente tener hambre.

Amen
