PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

As we finish our Liturgical year, let us see all the blessings God has given us during the year as we celebrated the Mysteries of the life of

Christ our Lord. How many moments of prayer touched every aspect of our lives! Let us recommit our total being, to building the Kingdom of

God, of Christ throughout the earth.

As we celebrate the Thanksgiving Day Weekend, may God give us a grateful heart, with the capacity to appreciate the infinite gifts from

God. Let us pray for our country and for the whole world.

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom…” Luke

Monsignor Lorenzo Miranda

Long live, Christ our King!

Building Active Listening Skills with Children

Building your active listening skills with the children in your life can help you communicate more effectively with them, and it can also clue you in to any suspicious or potentially danger-ous relationships in their lives. Active listening lets the speaker know that you have heard, understood, and valued what he or she said. Often, children don’t feel this way, but with a few easy tactics, you can change that, building a relationship of trust and respect. As an active listener, be sure to make eye contact while the child is speak-ing. Ask follow-up questions and check in to make sure you both understand what’s being said. Avoid “yes or no” ques-tions and instead ask open-ended questions that will keep the conversation going. For more tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Children are to be Seen and Heard,” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

PAPAL INTENTION FOR NOVEMBER

Our parish and school have endowed us with wonderful spir-itual blessings. Many of us have re-ceived the sacraments of Bap sm, First Communion, and Confirma on. Others have exchanged wedding vows, and some have bid farewell to a loved one here in the comfort of our spiritual home. Our parish plays a vital role throughout our lives. Just as we now benefit from the generosity of those who came before us, we, too, are “called to renew” our Church to ensure future genera ons can encounter Christ and have a conducive place to worship and receive a Catholic educa-

on. Therefore, I am pleased to an-nounce the par cipa on of our parish’s Called to Renew campaign and invite you to consider God’s many blessings in your life, our parish, and the Archdi-ocese of Los Angeles. I hope you will join me in suppor ng this historic cam-paign, and I thank you for your faithful support of our parish.

FIRST COMMUNION NEWS

WE REFLECT…

During the week, our young people who are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation for the first time will be reflecting on the importance of the Scriptures as a guide for our life. Join them by reading and reflecting on The Great Commandments (Luke 10: 25-28) and on Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12). Let us keep them in prayer that they will continue to love God’s word and be guided by it in their actions.

Matthew 25:35-36

NOVEMBER 24, 2019 PAGE 5

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe What kind of King is Jesus? How do you envision him? Remembering that they were promised a king from the line of David, the Israelites hoped for a Messiah who would set their political problems aright and bring about a worldly kingdom of Judaic power. Even Psalm 122 seems to describe this type of ruler. Luke’s Gospel today shreds that image after the whip of the Roman soldiers tore at Jesus flesh. Still, the Romans flaunted the traditional no-tion with their ironic inscription above King Jesus crown of thorns. Soldiers and ordinary people jeered the royal title at him. Yet the throne of Jesus was the cross of Christ, from which he dispensed kingly mercy and justice toward the humble criminal who shared his execution. Writing to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes the truth about Jesus and his kingship, using words like fullness, peace, and forgiveness. So let us go rejoicing! Who is the King of Glory? Ancient Israel understood God to be the only King that they needed. As time went on, human envy and insecurity crept in, and they wanted a king like their neighbors, an earthly king who would lead them to greatness. God’s people came to depend upon and find their strength in frail humanity rather than their faithful Creator. When that failed, they hoped for a human Messiah King to give them back that fragile sense of security. We can under-stand, perhaps, their confusion upon encountering the powerfully gentle and gloriously humble Jesus. The King of Hearts Are you aware that today’s joyous feast is not even one hundred years old? In his 1925 encyclical Quam Primas, Pius XI established the feast of Christ the King. Remem-ber what the world was like in those days--the rise of na-tionalism and secularism in Europe and un-Godly false prophets, leading inexorably to the Passion of the Holo-caust and wide-ranging martyrdoms. No wonder the pope was anxious to show the world a true King! Saint Luke today goes straight to the heart of kingship, of a king’s devotion to his beloved people. In this topsy-turvy king-dom, we see not a king decked in power and glory, but the crucified King of the Jews who robes himself in the suffering of a sad and lonely world. His forgiveness and heart-breaking love throughout his passion is a hard act for humans to follow, and yet Jesus gives us his life and death as a model. And then he tells us that, along with the good criminal, we will be with him in Paradise. What more could we ever ask? It is fitting that Pius encyclical ties this royal feast to the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This King who gave his heart to humanity in the sacrificial love feast of Good Friday gives his heart every day to a broken world still trying to figure out who he is.

do maravillosas bendiciones espirituales.

Every year, the Skidrow Sandwich Program pre-sents a new pair of socks along with a Christmas lunch to the Cardinal Manning Center for the home-less on Skidrow. There will be a box for your sock donation inside of the church at all the masses on the dates indicated above. We greatly appreciate your help.
