During WWII George earned the distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts flying with an RAF squadron of Canadian built DeHavilland Mosquito aircraft. After immigrating to Canada following WWII George ultimately achieved the position of Executive Vice President of Stelco. After his reitirement George continued to pursue an ongoing passion for world travel, carefully documenting and photographing his var- ied experiences. He also volunteered his time to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hos- pital and the Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. Predeceased by his first wife Hilda (Graham) Layt and his second wife Jean (Tolhurst) Layt, he will be lovingly remembered by his many lifetime friends, his nieces Orlaith (Graham) Duke and Clodagh (Graham) Cameron, his nephew Edward Graham, his step- sons Cliff and Larry Read, his close personal friend Helen Prowse, and their families.
