During the event we had a number of players engage in a question and answer session with their coach and what they shared was very informative. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the morning came from Michael Close, a young key forward. Without prompting he raised the way in which training has changed under Fagan as a coach. Now at each training session he is required to set goals around what he wants or needs to achieve during that session. The impact of this has been to give every session a real sense of validity and purpose. Comparing this to the classroom, our teachers, particularly in the upper age groups, now place learning objectives for each lesson on the white boards so that all students know what they need to achieve by the end of the lesson. Just like Close, all of our students now know what they are trying to achieve each lesson. There are clear reference points for them to check their progress against and can inform them as to where they need to put in extra work or clarify their understanding. During the breakfast session Close publicly affirmed Fagan’s practice in making him set objectives or goals for each training session. He stated that he was much more focused and he felt he was performing more effectively. I would hope that we can encourage all of our students to affirm their teachers’ practice in the same manner as Close did for his coach. Futhermore, we can all encourage our students to make full use of lesson objectives to help them improve their education. The greater the level of engagement and self-responsibility demonstrated by students, the better they will be. In education, positive relationships between teachers and students are essential and lead to the most effective learning and the best student outcomes. If we applied the same principle to AFL then the Lions are heading for a season in which there will be a massive level of improvement as it was clear that Fagan has made positive relationships with the players in his team.

As many of you may have seen in the paper this week, the Brisbane Lions were in town. We were fortunate enough to be the venue where the Mayor hosted her Mayoral Business Breakfast at which a number of the Brisbane Lions spoke, along with their Coach, Chris Fagan.

Before I go further it would be remiss of me not to publically thank all of our Prefects, Mr Proudlove, John Rogers, our catering team and our Admin team for making the event not only possible but the success it was.

A message from the Chaplain.....I believe my role as Chaplain here at the College is to uplift the spiritual life of our community. Not only does the College excel in academics, sport, drama, art, etc. but we are looking holistically at every student. Therefore I address contextual and contemporary issues with them looking at ethical values, good principles, and practices. At times I do address far-reaching and profound issues e.g. sexuality, using social media, etc. Last year I addressed issues like integrity, justice, inclusion, respect, honesty, etc. Because we are a church school, I do use the Bible as one of the many resources in my preparation.

At times I might say things that the students may interpret as controversial to their understanding. When they share that with you as a parent, and you are also in disagreement with me, can I please ask that you contact me. To contact the Principal or any other teacher is not helpful because they might not have been in the chapel for that particular session. It would be great to have a conversation with you as there are always two sides to a story.

I'm looking forward to working with you on this and the opportunity to get to know your family.

Blessings Rev Willie

Subhead. Subhead. Subhead. Subhead.

What is the INCubate Twilight Startup Workshop? An exciting opportunity has emerged for young entrepreneurs across the Southern Downs to pitch their ideas, gain invaluable business skills and lay the foundations for our future workforce. Southern Downs Regional Council has partnered with Advance Queensland and Toowoomba-based consulting company Strategenics, to deliver a workshop for young people in the region aged 15-24, to develop start-up skills to help ideas and innovations become alternative paths of employment.

MAKE YOUR IDEA REAL…STARTUP YOUR BUSINESS… FOR YOUR FUTURE!

The ‘INCubate Start-up Workshop’ will be held on Saturday, 11 March 2017 from 1pm to 10pm. The workshop will offer individuals the opportunity to pitch their product or business idea and then learn practical business skills and start-up principles, such as how to develop a business model and market an idea. Participants will work in groups to pitch selected ideas to a panel which will decide on the most promising idea. The chosen group will then receive a business coaching session from Strategenics’ founder and Managing Director, Mr Chris Mills. Proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Advance Queensland initiative.

Career Avenues Testing

SET planning is a process in which Year 10 students are assisted to think through future education and career possibilities. The program will continue throughout Terms 2 and 3, and will culminate on Travel Day in Term 4 with an interview between the students, parents and their SET Plan Teacher, at which time the student’s subject selections for Years 11 and 12 will be finalised.

On Wednesday 1st March, as the first step in the SET Plan process, all Year 10 students will be undertaking a full career assessment conducted by Dr Marian Kratzing, a Careers Psychologist with Career Avenues, a specialist career consultancy service. The cost per student will be $148 which includes a comprehensive written report and a 30 minute individual interview/feedback session. (The comparative cost of an individual career assessment in Brisbane costs around $550).

The assessment session will be around 4 hours in duration and will consist of a number of questionnaires and tests designed to measure factors which are important in selecting a career. These will include:

1. An Aptitude Assessment covering six areas: non verbal, verbal, numerical, clerical, mechanical and spatial reasoning. This assessment is very important in helping students establish where their strengths lie.

2. Occupational Interest Assessment: This assessment item uses an Australian interest inventory to identify preferred vocational roles.

3. Personal Style Assessment: The personal style will give information about the kind of work focus and work environment which will most likely suit the student.

Report & Interview:Following the assessment session, the results will be scored and analysed and then Dr Kratzing will write individual reports for each students of around 12 -13 pages each. The reports will be handed back in an individual interview with Dr Kratzing. The interviews will take place at school in early May.

If you are a new student to the College in Years 11 or 12, we would encourage you to undertake this assessment to help assist you with your future career direction and subject selections. The cost of the assessment ($148) will be debited to your school account. If you would like to participate in the assessment process, please see Mrs Bellingham in the VET Office.
