Teaching Children When You Mean BusinessIt is the beginning of a new school year and already we

have spoken to some parents who have responded with, “My children won’t obey me unless I get angry.” Sounds familiar? Well, here are some tips of how you can change this and make a fresh start to the year.

If you have formed the “get angry” first habit, you’ve un-fortunately taught your children to wait until you’re angry before they have to obey. It is important that you change this habit to give your children new cues to know when you mean business. Those cues tell your child that it’s time to respond and “do what they are told”, because your action point is coming next. There is a definite connection be-tween action point and anger. Many parents use the energy from anger to finally take action. When parents learn to tighten up their action point, then they don’t have to use anger as the motivator. In fact, anger can often be a flag that your action point isn’t tight enough.

So, if you find that you’ve been relying on anger to moti-vate your children, then it’s time to make the change. First though, you need to develop a new plan. What signals do you want to use to indicate that it’s time to clean up, or it’s time to go? Maybe you’ll use the child’s name and obtain eye contact and use the word “now” in the instruction.

When you’re ready to make this change, talk with your children. Explain that you have been wrong in teaching them to wait until you get angry before they start obeying. From now on you are going to tell them once, then comes the action. If your child doesn’t respond to the new cues then move right to a consequence.

You may use a warning at first as your children are learn-ing to respond to new cues. This helps them see that you mean business, but don’t add several warnings or you de-feat the purpose. Develop a routine with your children so that they know when discussion or delays are over and obe-dience is required.

Strategy for the week: Wedon’tencourageparentsto always demand obedience. Children also learnfromnegotiation, compromise, andcooperation, butthereisatimeforchildrentorespondwhethertheylikeitornot.Yourchildrenneedtoknowwhenthatis and clarifying your action point will help themlearnit.

‘Schools in’ at Noah’s Ark!

Blessed with mostly fine weather since the start of the school term, all children have been busily involved in their play. Through block play and home corner activities the boys are develop-ing their language and mathematical skills. This is real learning taking place.

As A Man Thinks In His Heart...

There are so many reasons why we should be mindful of the thoughts we have and of the way we think of ourselves. These thoughts can so powerfully influence decisions we make and the way we relate to others. Proverbs 23:7 states “As a man thinks in his heart so is he.” We need to encour-age our young people to guard their thoughts and beliefs about things in the world and also about themselves.

I did not write the article below, but thought you may enjoy reading it.

AND SO IT IS“I can’t do anything right!” the young man said. I hesitated to say anything. It was really none of my busi-

ness. I hear people undermining their lives all the time. “I’m so stupid!” he shouted. “And so it is!” I said quietly to myself. At least I thought I did. “What did you say?” he asked of me. I was embarrassed for having been heard. “I guess...I was really talking to myself,” I said. “Yeah, I do that, too,” he replied. “Why would anyone

else want to?” “But you are saying all the wrong things,” I said. He stopped what he was doing and approached me. “What are you talking about? And what business is it of

yours?” he asked. Okay, now I’ve gone too far into this. He’s a bit angry at

himself and now me for getting involved. “Well, I was talking about you and it’s really none of my

business, you are right.” He stood looking at me, waiting. “I hear people putting themselves down all the time. “I

can’t!” “I’m so stupid!” “Dummy!” “I can’t do anything right!”

“So?” “And so it is!” “And so what is?” “When you keep feeding yourself things like that it be-

comes a reality. Say you’re stupid enough times and you begin to believe it. Say that you can’t and you can’t.”

“Oh, don’t waste that positive stuff on me!” he shouted. “There you go again. Why is it a waste?” “Because it just doesn’t work on me.” “And so it is!” I said. Then standing right in front of him

I said, “It works, you don’t.” “Hey, do you think I’m stupid?” “No, but you do. And having just met you for the first

time and hearing you say all those things to yourself, I’d have to guess you were right.”

“Well, I’m not!” he said as he walked away. “Now keep saying that to yourself and see what a differ-

ence it makes in your life!” I yelled to him as he left the room.

SecondaryI was frustrated. I spend my life trying to get people to

see beauty in the world and love in their life. I write stories to inspire, plant a seed, adjust an attitude, or simply fill a void.

I wish I could say that moments later the young man came rushing back to tell me that he needed to hear what I had to say.

It didn’t happen. You see, the business I’m in is based on faith. I believe in something bigger than I, but I can’t see it. I believe in hope, but I can’t measure it. I move ahead through life following my dreams, but I

can’t touch them. So, I write stories and send them to friends I’ve never

met. I speak to rooms full of people I will never see again. I write and speak about those things that touch us all. Like wanting to believe in something bigger. Finally knowing that when all appears lost, there’s always

hope. Dreams make today worth living and tomorrow worth

waiting for. “And so it is.” “I believe in you!”

Rachel Solyom, Librarian

A big hello to all the fami-lies, students and staff I have not yet met! I am absolutely thrilled to be starting 2011 as the new college librarian, after hearing for years about King’s Christian College.

I have lived on the Gold Coast my whole life, spending my school years in Nerang, and since I was old enough to start borrowing books at the local library I knew this was what I wanted to do. I graduated from the Masters of Infor-mation Management at QUT in 2008 and during my studies up until now I have worked in every type of library - aca-demic, public, special - including GC Council library, Griffith Uni and the State Library of Qld.

I love being with children of all ages and have found the staff here amazing to work with. I promise you there are MANY exciting changes and events taking place in the main library.... so stay tuned and do pop in and say hi!!!

Deborah de Beurs, Year 5

Hi, I'm Deborah de Beurs. I'm very excited to be here at King's Christian College this year teaching year 5. I at-tended a Christian school in rural New Zealand as a child and will never forget the bibli-cal values instilled in me then that will last a lifetime, plus the hundreds of memory verses I can still recall today. I have taught in Brisbane, London and New Zealand and I'm finally here to settle on the Gold Coast. I believe I have the greatest class in the world and am excited about helping them achieve their full potential this year.

New Teachers at King's...

Cyberspace CornerDo you know what your child is playing on the computer?Do you routinely check the content of their Play Station/Xbox games?Be alarmed!Having looked into some video games being played, the dangerous level of violence and behaviour is very shocking.

Currently in Australia we have a loophole in our classification system, which prevents games from having an appropriate rating.

A great number of games overseas carry an R18+ rating, however in Australia they only carry an MA rating. “The world of the video gamer is characteristically filled with violence without empathy and behaviours without con-

sequences. Little wonder these qualities become learned and transferred to the real world”. Dr Tim Hawkes, Teacher Magazine, Dec. 2009.

Please check the material your child has access to in all forms. For further insight into the dangers of these games, to view imagery from a game please load these into your browser
