Key Dates for Senior Students: Term 4, 2015 It is important that all families are aware of important dates for the senior students. These are shown below, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information. The VCE Examinations can contribute up to 50 percent of a student’s overall Study Score for each subject area, and it is essential that our students give themselves every opportunity to succeed in completing these. We have a busy few weeks ahead, but with the right preparations, it can also be a highly exciting and rewarding time.

Year 11 National Gallery Art Excursion

The Year 11 Art class went to Melbourne last Tuesday to visit the National Gallery of Victoria to see real artworks in a gallery setting rather than just in books or on the internet. Playing with the water window was great fun. One of the highlights was seeing Kate Rohde’s entry for the Rigg Design Prize 2015, which was extravagant, bright and imaginative. Everyone was inspired and came away with ideas to pursue.

Grand DiVisions and ACMI

Thursday, 15th October 2015 Group 71 with Ms Swan and Mr Kellett travelled by train from South Geelong to Melbourne for some toe tapping hiphop and suave, sophisticated, soul singing at the Victorian Arts Centre in St Kilda Road. Plus experienced some street art at ACMI around Federation Square.

The day was warm and pleasant, reaching 30 degrees but we observed those sun smart ideas and stayed in the shade, hydrated and air conditioned for most of the day. All enjoyed the weather.

Students first went to Spencer shops at Southern Cross station then onto some street art in Hoisery Lane opposite Federation Square off Flinders Street. We then went via the Australian art in the Ian Potter Centre at the back of Federation Square and enjoyed the cool ‘air con’ in the Atrium. On heading for the Victorian Arts Centre – we went via the ‘other’ international, St.Kilda Road Art Gallery (FREE to visit as well) and experienced the ‘water wall’ aside the front doors.

We arrived at the Arts Centre Spire – Theatres building and saw a show in The Studio entitled Grand DiVisions. The show had 44 performers including two 12 year old rappers – plus large numbers of other rappers – which our students really enjoyed. There was an orchestra of 20 plus 4 dancers. The music, drama, dance and stories told were enthralling as they told their stories about how they got to Australia and how good Australia is as a mostly welcoming community. Another highlight was the accopella singing by the Samoan female singers. There was much crowd clapping , cheering and engagement.

Group 71 were the guests of the Victorian Arts Centre Trust, having their travel and show paid for by the Trust. So thank

you to the Art Centre Trust.

Mr Paul Kellett

Year 9 / 10 World Changers History

Jewish Holocaust Centre, Melbourne trip Monday, 12th October 12 2015.

World Changers students had studied the Holocaust as part of their World War 2 unit of work and we attended the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne to hear first hand some of the life threatening experiences of the survivors. We also toured the museum. Our group was given a talk by Lusia. She was 8 when Hitler’s Nazi’s invaded Poland in 1939. Their family fled to Warsaw but because of the freezing winter they were caught by the Nazi’s there. They were forced into a Jewish ghetto and saw many Jews die of malnutrition, overcrowding and Nazi extermination. Eventually as Hitler’s men in seeking the “final solution” – killing all Jews – led them to the termination camps that had now been set up in Poland. From there she was separated at Auschwitz (where her 7 year old brother and father were killed). Eventually she was on the ‘forced march’ to Germany’s Bergen Belsen death camp, as the Russians were ‘liberating’ eastern Europe. One of many examples of the horrid, unjustifiable and hatred experienced by Lusia (and the Jews, communists, homosexuals, Slavs, gypsies…) was “we were told we may relive ourselves –so some got off the cattle-trucks and all were shot as they went to the toilet”. As Luisa said she took her father’s advice and did the opposite to what the Nazi said and she survived. The Museum was impressive and informative with really helpful and educational guides. The images and items and models were chilling in the stories they represented. It is a public museum and you may wish to visit. Lusia was overheard to say of our Newcomb students – “beautiful, well mannered students”. Lusia had high standards so this was a significant compliment.

Paul Kellett (and Andrew McNaught), World Changers teachers.

Year 11 VCAL Excursion to City Hall On Tuesday, 6th October Year 11 VCAL went to the City of Greater Geelong City Hall to meet a representative named Amanda who talked to us about the Council and how it works. We spoke about the different governments and who does what as well as how money is spread through the Federal, State and Local governments. Later on we played a quiz about different services the council provides to the public like toilets, parks, swimming pools (there are 8) and other things that the council owns and maintains. We also learnt about what happens to land owned by the council that places like Alcoa have been using and how they have to fix the land before it can be used again. Our group also came up with the idea of turning the empty Ford

factory into a theme park! (My Mum’s idea actually). We are now producing walking maps of Whittington and Newcomb areas that will be used by the council to help people find services and things of interest around our neighbourhood. And Jack found out that City Hall has the clearest drinking water he had ever seen! Brody Watson
