District Five middle school students lead “Liter of Light” project

IRMO – Students at a Lexington-Richland District Five middle school are work-ing to provide innovative, cost-free sources of light to people in underservedand impoverished areas.Irmo Middle School is near completion of its Liter of Light project, a global initia-tive whereby discarded plastic bottles are turned into sustainable sources of energy. School officials say the pro-ject aligns with the school’s new International Academic Magnet (iAM) school theme and its new ExpeditionaryLearning model, both which are aimed at getting students to think globally and engage in service projects.“When you have projects like Liter of Light, what you see are teachers who ask thought-provoking, high-leveldepth of knowledge questions that force kids to do strategic thinking,” said Irmo Middle Principal Robert Jack-son. “You also have students actively engaged in unpacking and grappling with issues that are unique to theircommunity. We want our students to be actively engaged in learning and thinking of ways to better the worldaround them. Liter of Light helps us do that.”Made from used plastic bottles filled with bleach water and lined with metal plating, the Liter of Light “bulbs” arefixed into holes in roofs and refract the sun’s rays to create light of approximately 55-watts. As part of the pro-ject, students searched for ways to create more wattage and won top prizes in this year’s District Five sciencefair for their findings. Since January, Irmo Middle students have made nearly 100 bulbs to be distributed in Maythrough Habitat for Humanity.Eighth graders Sarah Witt and William Colgan say the Liter of Light project was more than a science experimentand school project.“I learned that some things we take for granted are really not available to others,” Witt said. “It helped us to seethat not everyone else has the same opportunities that we do.”Colgan added, “It’s changed me. I had known about less fortunate countries but didn’t know exactly what wasgoing on there. It was also the first time that I had done a service project, but I hope to do more volunteeringbecause of what I learned here.”The new International Academic Magnet (iAM) @ Irmo Middle School is aimed at inspiring students in grades 7-8 to compete and collaborate in the international community through developing competencies in leadership, communication, fine arts and entrepreneurship. The Expeditionary Learning model encompasses traditional cur-riculum like math, science, English and other subjects; but also requires students to answer a question, address aproblem and take action on an issue unique to the school’s community.Science teacher Cheryl Harrison says Liter of Light is an example of both the magnet program and Expeditionarymodel, which teach students to contribute to a global society.“I didn’t want it to be something that they did but had no meaning behind it when it was over,” Harrison said. “Ipartnered with Ms. (Sandra) Jensen, a math teacher here at the school, and we decided on the Liter of Light pro-ject. This is something that is truly beneficial, serves the community and connects to the international theme ofour magnet program. Our students have gained so much from this project.”**************************************************************************************************************************************

Revised End-of-Year Schedule

At Monday night's School Board Meeting, the trustees approved our districtplan for inclement weather make-up days.

We had a total of four inclement weather days (January 29 and February12 -14). We already made-up one day (February 17). The bill passed by the SC legislature and signed bythe Governor requires that all scheduled make-up days be used before any days can be forgiven. June6th is the only remaining make-up day. Therefore, June 6, 2014 is now a school day in Lex5. The re-maining two inclement weather days were forgiven and will not be made-up.

Extending the school year by one day, requires that the half day schedule shift one day as well. June3rd will now be a full school day. June 4th, 5th, and 6th will are the half days.

The exam schedule for the last week of school is as follows:
