E-Marketing in India

E- Marketing is considered to be broad in scope because it not only

refers to marketing on the Internet, but also includes marketing done via e-mail and wireless

media. Digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management (ECRM) systems

are also often grouped together under internet marketing.

Although, India has come out of infancy stage of E-Marketing and progressing rapidly but still it

is far behind the developed countries like U.S.A, Canada and U.K. There are several factors

which have impacts on status of E-Marketing in India. Majority of the Indian population resides

in villages where the literacy level is low and the infrastructure required for E-Marketing is

inadequate. The instances of cyber crimes are growing at increasing rate in the field of E-

Marketing. In the absence of adequate legal protection, people hesitate to indulge in online

marketing. The cultural scenario of India is entirely different from those countries where E-

Marketing has become common practice. India is multi lingual and multi cultural country.

Around two dozen languages are spoken in India. The multi lingual characteristic of India

hinders the growth of E-Marketing. High initial investment in setting of infrastructures of E-

Marketing also counts towards the progress of E-Marketing.

But now position is being changing the prime use of E-Marketing channels in 2010 was

customer acquisition. For majority of Indian marketers this platform proved its effectiveness

(97%) and a substantial number of marketers are using this platform for daily communications

(34%) with their audiences. Overall the use of E-Marketing platform in 2010 was focused on

sending promotional communications (62%) and newsletters (52%).

In email marketing, the main challenges faced by marketers in India are ‘Reaching Inbox’ &

‘Building Subscriber Lists’. As reported by Indian marketers, the top 3 factors impacting email

deliverability were: Frequency, content of mailer and sender reputation. In order to decrease

inbox clutter, marketers are now focusing on Personalization’ and ‘Targeting’ of their mailers.

Overall the responsibility of email delivery is fairly distributed between IT team (22%),

Marketing group (22%), partnership between IT group and marketing team (26%) and ESPs

(19%). There is no single group ownership as yet.

According to marketers in India, the integration of email and SMS will result in a significant

increase in the return on campaign investments. About 82% of marketers believe that there is

indeed a synergy in integrated service offering to customers. For 78% of marketers, across

different verticals,

It is important to integrate their email marketing and social media tools in marketing campaigns

while 52% of the top marketers said that it is extremely important to integrate email marketing

and social media.

Online shopping in India

Prof.Sudeep Limaye, (Asst.Prof.ASM’s IIBR)

M.Com, PGDBM (MKT.),

ASM’s Institute of International Business & Research

Having18 years of Industry Experience, with companies like Godrej & Boyce, Ureka

Fobers, Punj Lloyd Group, etc. & 3 years of teaching Experience.

Along with the telecom boom, India is also witnessing a boom in the internet penetration in homes. Web is no more limited to office emails and ERP networks.

Online shopping is also gaining increasing popularity in India with more and more customers getting enticed to the experience of order, click and collect. The pace of growth is slow as compared to the United States and Europe is showing a good and an impressive upward trend. A market research revealed that a quarter of the consumers surveyed indicated that they spend over 11 percent of their monthly shopping expenditure on online purchases.

Drivers of growthThe reason for the impressive upward trend could be accounted to the high spending power, penetration of internet, lifestyle changes, enough leisure time and desire for convenience shopping. The convenience and the increased personal control to shop whenever wherever and however they like has motivated many shoppers to opt for online shopping. Further, as banks continue to increase the security of personal and credit information, more people are becoming less doubtful of the practice.

Varied choices from homeCustomers are fast getting used to this simple and easy way to buy lot of products. From the convenience of their home, customers are able to shop from a variety of products across variety of choices. There is plethora of product lists on the internet, ranging from books, music, travel reservations, flowers, CD’s, T-Shirts, digital television, furniture, personal care products, cameras or ipods. Reports indicate that the online shoppers spend most on tourism, including booking air tickets, hotels and travel. There is also increasing purchasing trends of apparel, computers consumer electronics, banking and financial services.

Time efficiencyTime efficiency is the other key driver that has caused the shift towards online shopping. Online shopping offers quicker processing time within the comfort of their home. It also means the customers are relieved from the agony of traffic jams, clogged malls and parking headaches. They can shop round the clock without bothering if it is a public holiday or Sunday. They don’t have to wait for the stores to open; they can do the shopping even in the early hours of the day.

Vast product informationInternet provides a ready source of product information, which is key factor when making a decision about technology products. Customers can browse and search products without interruption from sales people. Without moving from store to store, customers can do a fair comparison of prices across shop with the click of a mouse. Virtual malls like eBay, rediff shopping, futurebazaar.com are just few names of online retailing which offer helpful information in vast category of products at one location. Customers are also increasingly becoming aware about the possibility of returning goods, if they are not satisfied with the product. They use the toll free contact numbers to quickly clarify any doubts regarding products or services.

15

ASM’s Institute of International Business & Research

Retailer initiativesRetailers are discovering that by making online shopping experience hassle-free and user-friendly, they can achieve better sales. The retailers are taking several steps to make the online shopping experience a very useful and timesaving affair for consumers. They are creating simple tools that can streamline the experience and eliminate some of the difficulties consumers face in the shopping process. Many retailers have improved their search function, added or enhanced product videos and also many have included customer reviews to help shoppers make better buying decisions. Most online retailers use shopping carts to allow shoppers to add multiple items. The shoppers are allowed to pay via several methods which are very similar to traditional retail shopping.

Increasing online women shopperOnline shopping is fast evolving and there is no doubt that it has great potential in the future. In the past decade it was more of men who would spend time searching information or making online orders. Currently there is an increasing trend of women using the internet to make online purchases. With greater disposable income with the working women and changing lifestyle more women are getting attracted to online shopping. Also, women show a greater tendency to share their online experience with others. Good user experience is believed to contribute to further growth in the industry.

Growth prospectsWith increasing consumer interest in online shopping, the amount of business that is conducted electronically has seen extraordinary growth. According to MasterCard’s ‘Latest Insights Report, Online Shopping in Asia Pacific - Patterns, Trends and Future Growth’, the online shopping growth is expected to further accelerate in the Asia Pacific region including India. The growth is expected to increase at an annual rate of 23.3percent, reaching USD168.7 billion by 2011. With greater penetration of internet in rural areas the online shopping is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years.
