On Field Activities

Rochestown Park Hotel Division1 Football League The Senior footballers have got off to a great start in the Senior Football league with five wins out of five. It all began on the 9th February with a good win over ILen Rovers on a scoreline of 2-12 to 3-06. In difficult conditions the team performed well and were worthy winners. Conor Horgan notched up a total of 1-07. This was followed by a hard fought win away to Naomh Aban with Alan O’Donovan scoring 4 points from Nemo’s total of 0-13 to Naomh Aban’s 0-10. The third win was a comfortable victory over Aghada at Trabeg. The game ended on a scoreline of Nemo 4-10 and Aghada 0-5. Douglas came to Trabeg and fell to a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-09. Sunday the 30th March saw the visit of county champions Castlehaven to Trabeg. Nemo maintained their 100% record by winning on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-8 with Ciaran Dalton getting the all important goal. The Intermediate Footballers have not got off to a good start with two defeats in Division2 of the league. In the first game they lost at home to Kiskeam on a scoreline of 1-05 to 1-13. This was followed by an away game to Ballincollig with Nemo were unfortunate to be beaten by a single goal on a scoreline of 1-10 to 2-10. Hopefully as the season progresses the results will improve. The Junior A footballers have had a mixed bag with one win against Na Piarsaigh and one defeat away to Bishopstown. The JA Hurlers got the season off to a good start with a very comfortable win against Passage on a scoreline of 2-21 to 0-7. This was followed by a draw with Na Piarsaigh in low scoring game of 0-13 points each. Congratulations to the Under 21A Team who qualified for the city division final with a very good and hard-fought victory over the Barrs, winning on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-09.

Mick O’Brien Tournament

Nemo Rangers won their annual Mick O’Brien Fe14 football tournament held over the weekend of Feb 1st in Trabeg. After gaining a good draw in their opening group match versus St Vincents (Dublin), they then had a good win over Dohenys. In the other three team group, Naas came through to the final after wins over Eire Og and Cuala. In the final, both teams played excellent football in a very sporting contest, with Nemo prevailing on a score of 0-10 to 1-4. Captain John Corcoran accepted the cup, and also won the man of the tournament award. Many thanks to the five visiting teams, to the Nemo grounds staff, referees, organising committee and for the food provided by the ladies committee on both days. Below see a photo of the team and their mentors and also a photo of Colin Corkery presenting the trophy to the Nemo captain. Well done to all involved - especially the Nemo boys!

2013 Minor County Champions – Well done Girls!!

Did you know :

50 years ago in 1964 Padraig O Caoimh Ard –Runaithe of the GAA (1929-1964) and distinguished member of Raonaithe Nemo died. In 1976 the Cork GAA named their new stadium in his honour and as a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to the GAA

40 years ago Nov 10th 1974 Nemo officially opened it’s new clubhouse on the back Douglas Road. Chairman at the time was Dan Flynn

30 years ago Nemo secured their 4th. All-Ireland club victory. This was a unique occasion for a couple of reasons, firstly as the semi finals and final were played over the same weekend in Athlone. Secondly due to a clash of colours for the Final against Walterstown of Meath, Nemo lined out in the Jerseys of our near neighbours Douglas. The captain on the day was Jimmy Kerrigan.

20 years ago the Junior A Hurlers secured the city Division Hurling Championship with a remarkable victory against Na Piarsaigh. With only 30sec of normal time remaining and a goal down, the ever alert Deccie Creedon finished off a close in free from John Coogan to level the game. This was followed by two points and a pitch invasion the like of which has not been seen since.

Nemo U12s Trip to Dublin A party of 31 children and 17 adults headed off to Dublin bright and early on March 1st for a day of adventure. Stopping at Croke Park in the morning the group did the tour of the Stadium. Everyone really enjoyed the experience – especially the sound effects in the tunnel as the boys headed out on to the hallowed turf! After lunch the team headed to Maynooth for a challenge game. 2 games of 12 aside football were played. 20 minutes aside. Both games were close and competitive with the Nemo boys coming out on top in both. Great football was played by both teams. Our generous hosts provided the group with refreshments before they headed back to Croker for the big game. Cork vs. Dublin. And what a game it proved to be. Fantastic football and fantastic scores from both teams, Icing on the cake was a Cork victory. And to top it off our very own Paul Kerrigan was named MoM. Many thanks to Paul and the other Cork players for spending so much time with the boys after the game, signing autographs. After that it was back to Cork! Everyone was tired but also delighted with the day’s adventure. Our thanks to Maynooth for hosting the challenge game. See below the group in the warm up area under the Hogan stand! Hopefully it won’t be the last time there for some of them.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade This year a group of 70 boys and girls took part in the annual Douglas Village

great day out! Well done to all who took part.

Down Memory Lane Nemo Junior Hurlers create unbeatable record fifth championship in succession. That was the headline in 1964, fifty years ago. What a remarkable achievement from a very talented group of players. It all began in 1960 with the hurlers doing the double, winning league and championship. In the championship final Nemo beat our near neighbours Douglas on a scoreline of 6-17 to 2-3. Great credit is due to team captain Brendan Hurley for the organising and training of the team during the season. The City double was completed again in 1961 with Bishopstown our opponents in the championship final. 1962 saw the three in row accomplished. Having defeated Passage, Glen Rovers and the Barr’s, Nemo beat Lough Rovers in the infamous final. Nemo won on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-05 in a match few wish to remember but will last in the minds of those who were there. The team again won the league that year. The historic run continued in 1963 with Na Piarsaigh, St. Finbarrs and Blackrock suffering defeat at the hands of this mighty team. It was not to end there as the remarkable and historic fifth title in row was secured in 1964. The final was against near rivals St. Finbarrs with a late goal by Denis Mc Donnell securing the trophy. Well done to all.

Cork Reach Cadbury U21 Football Final The Cork U21 Footballers began their 2014 campaign with a hard-fought victory over Kerry in Tralee on March 12th, eventually emerging victorious on a scoreline of 0-18 to 2-8. Despite missing a number of players through injury, they went on to easily dispose of Limerick at Páirc Uí Rinn on March 19th. to set up a final meeting with 2011 All-Ireland Minor Champions, Tipperary. This mouth-watering Munster final, a fourth in a row for Cork at this level, is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9th. 8pm at Páirc Uí Rinn. Best of luck to all involved especially to the Nemo contingent of Manager Sean Hayes and players, Kevin Fulignatti, Michael Aodh Martin, Conor Horgan and Stephen Cronin

Cork City Online Foundation Courses Seandun Games Development is running a Foundation course next week for Hurling and Football in the City. It is an online course, with a 1 hour practical session for each code at the end. To register, contact [email protected] for details on registration and enrollment key codes. Participants have until 6pm on Wednesday 9th April, to complete the online segment of the course. It should take 3 hours approx to complete in total. There are 7 different modules to complete in each code, with some overlapping of content. It does not have to be completed in one go and people usually do it over a few days with a different module every day. After doing the online content, to finish the course, you must complete the Hurling and Football practical at the end, which will take place in the Indoor Hall, Nemo Rangers from 8-10pm on Wednesday 9th April. (Registration starts at 7.45pm) The cost of the course is €20, which is to be paid on the night of the practical workshop. If people only wish to do Hurling or Football separately, the cost will still be €20. I would advise participants to do both, as it will open up areas for future Coach Education progression, to Award 1 level and beyond. If you do not complete all the online modules or attend the workshop, then you will not gain any accreditation.
