This summer we began our path to put our Men's National Team back on the European Volleyball scene. At the moment, I will say that it's more about us making our own way rather finding our way. The road is uphill, our funding is very small, our access to facilities is limited and we don't have much resources - just two sets of jerseys, a couple of bags and a few track suits as a legacy from the previous squad 5 years ago. We frankly don't even have a single volleyball that belongs to our programme and we manage to train only because we gratefully borrow volleyballs from clubs and the women’s squads. Every single training this summer was a little miracle; we did it and we weren't lazy. We did 6 big trainings camps (2 to 3 sessions a week), from fitness sessions with the UCD High Performance Centre, to volleyball training in UCD Sport Centre and Cloghar Road Sports Centre in Crumlin. Altogether, we did 19 training sessions over the summer, something like 40 hours training, and in a short period of time. At the moment we are only "training to train"; the players are learning the level of expectation from the technical staff and what standards are required for top level volleyball. We’re still miles away from a well organized National team on court, but we have improved significantly and I know our efforts will pay off quickly. I still remember the day when I was appointed; I’m sure a few people thought "does he know he’ll need 6 Irish players?!" Today our panel has 26 names and we still have 4 to 5 players in our waiting list. In fact, a few of them have returned to competitive volleyball because of our programme. We have attracted players who were without any clubs, possibly because they lost interest in the League games. I would like to thank all the people who helped us and shown any kind of support to us. I am thankful to the Board and Staff members of the VAI for their help over the summer. I am delighted with the huge Job that David Herlihy, Eamon O'Brien and Jeff King are doing for the squad. I am just as pleased also with the players’ commitment and I wish them an enjoyable tournament to show you all the good skills they are capable of. Signing off, you need to be a good mountain climber to be one of our squad members, because our road is very much uphill - but with your support, you will make us move faster. I hope that with your help, we will get as many supporters as possible for our first event in as many years. Please support the lads.” Laurent Cauet Head Coach Irish Men’s Volleyball Programme

“It's a long journey to the CEV Small Nations

Qualifiers for our Senior Men's team. This

summer we began our path to put our Men's

National Team back on the European Volleyball

scene.

At the moment, I will say that it's more about us

making our own way rather finding our way. The

road is uphill, our funding is very small, our

access to facilities is limited and we don't have

much resources - just two sets of jerseys, a couple
