Premier Intermediate Football League
Yesterday in Brinny, Valley Rovers PIF team in their last
league game of this season, secured promotion to Div 1
next season and will play Kelleher Shield football for the
first time in the clubs history. In defeating Clyda Rovers
on a score line 0-7 to 0-3, they completed their 11
game league campaign unbeaten and are now in the PIF
league final, (date to be confirmed). Their focus is now
on the Cork County PIFC semi final against Carrigaline
on September 28th.
Playing against the stiff breeze in the first half Valleys
Rovers lead at half time 0-3 to 0-1. With Darragh
Murphy opening the scoring inside 2 minutes Clyda
drew level soon afterwards. The Rovers had to wait
until the 22nd and 28th minutes for their next scores,
points from Hughie O’Donovan and Eoin Manning.
A very solid second half display saw the Rovers out
score Clyda 0-4 to 0-2. Two points from play in the first
10 minutes from Hughie and Fiachra Lynch had the
Rovers ahead 0-5 to 0-1. The Rovers remaining two
points both from frees came from John Cottrell and
Fiachra in the 19th and 24th minutes. Clydas two
second half scores came in the 12th minute and in
added time as it finished 0-7 to 0-3.
As with last weeks display in the victory over Ballincollig
huge credit must go to all the players on the panel in
achieving maximum points in their last two games.
Their commitment since the beginning of the year but
especially over the last number of weeks has delivered
a first for the PIF team. Well done to all. Team

Junior Football League V’s Tracton .
On Saturday evening Valley’s junior Footballers
travelled to Minane Bridge to take on Tracton in the
Junior Football League. This Valley’s team put in a
super performance over the hour leading from start to
finish. From the throw in Tadgh Burke and Danny
O’Sullivan dominated midfield and with Finbarr
Coleman, Padraig Forde and Denis Kelleher in control
at the back Valleys forwards had a plentiful supply of
ball. In the first half Valley’s kicked 10 points with
some super team worked scores usually finished off by
the likes of Jason Crowley or Darragh Looney. Also any
fouls by Tracton were punished by the accuracy of free
taker Eamonn McCarthy. Tracton did manage to move
up field on a few occasion to register two points to
leave the score at half time Valleys 0.10 to Tracton
0.02. After the break there was little change in the run
of the game with Valleys in control again. In this
second half they kicked six points some of the highest
standard especially a left footed effort from Brendan
Lynch, a super long range effort from Danny O’Sullivan
and an excellent team score from one of the field to
the other with Noel O’Leary with the finish. (It is
rumoured that Noel has now scored from Valley’s in
competitive action in each of the last 20 years). Valleys
held Tracton scoreless in the second half to run out
winners Valleys 0.16 to Tracton 0.02. Best for Valleys
on the night were John Mulligan, Bill Casey, Danny
O’Sullivan, Darragh Looney, Tim Casey and Jason
Crowley. Team

Under 16 Football Championship
Valley Rovers 2-19 St Colmans 1-14. Valley Rovers
U16s travelled to Shanagarry last Monday evening to
face St Colmans (a joint venture between Russell
Rovers and Cloyne) in the quarter final of the East
division “A” football championship. After the easy win
over Blarney in the previous round, their opponents on
this occasion gave a much stiffer test on a glorious
evening in East Cork. For nearly all of the match, this
was a very tight affair. Valley Rovers got off to a good
start with the first point, but St Colmans replied with a
goal and they had the better of the first quarter.
Rovers finished the first half strongly, scoring two goals
through Daniel Kenneally and Peter Callanan.
Together with some well taken points, including three
each by Adam Settini and Patrick Hurley, this gave
Rovers a one-goal lead at the break, 2-8 to 1-8.
The next twenty minutes were very close, with never
more than three points between the teams. However,
Rovers finished very strongly, scoring six points in the
final ten minutes against just one by St Colman’s,
resulting in a well-deserved win by 2-19 to 1-14. This
was a great team performance against very strong
opposition. Patrick Hurley was top scorer with six
points and it was encouraging to see ten different
players getting on the scoresheet. But this win was
down in no small part to great goalkeeping and
defending by Valley Rovers. St Colmans had some
excellent footballers and only for superb performances
by the backs, this match could have had a different
outcome.
Rovers now face Castlelyons this evening, Monday
September 15th in Whitechurch. Team:
Cian O’Donovan
Olan Fehily, William Hurley, Aaron Murphy
Fearghal Lyons, James Callanan, Rory O’Sullivan,

Valley Rovers U8’s have been very busy over the past
few weeks, participating in a number of blitzes and
matches. On Tuesday 26th August we hosted Eire Og
where the lads served up some thrilling hurling
matches. We then travelled to Enniskeane on Saturday
30th August for a hurling blitz and we were on the
road again on Friday 05th September when we
travelled to Clonakilty to play Clonakility in hurling.
Our focus switched to football in the past week and
we travelled to Ovens to play Eire Og on Thursday
11th September and we attended a football blitz in
Ballinascarthy on Saturday last 13th September.
We fielded 2 teams at each of the blitzes and we were
able to field 3 teams against Eire Og and Clonakilty
thanks to Eoin Galgey, Sean Lynch, Joe Twohig, William
Snapes and Danny O’Sullivan who were drafted in
from the U7’s.
The boys performed brilliantly on all occasions and
more than held their own against all opponents.
A big THANK YOU to the parents for bringing the lads
to the games and supporting the players.
U8 training will continue for another few weeks on
Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7.15pm at Brinny and
we also encourage the boys to practice their skills at
home.
A hurling blitz is next up on the 27th September at a
venue to be confirmed.
Attached is a photo of the U8’s who participated at
the match in Clonakilty. Missing for the photo are
Scott Johnson Collins and Sean T Kenneally who were
too fast for our photographer. Included are: Sam
Browne, Matthew Kelleher, Shane O’Connell, Seanie
Crowe, Roan Gilli, Luke Casey, Luke Humphreys, Liam
Dineen, Oisin McCarthy, Niall Daly, Ben Keane, Sean
Lynch, Neil Hennessy, Eoin Galgey, Billy Curtin,

visitors. Valleys upped their performance in the
second half scoring 6 points with Grace O Reilly and

Ladies Football All Ireland u10 Blitz
On Saturday morning last our u10 girls played in the All
Ireland football blitz, which was organised by the
Passage West GAA club. There were 76 teams taking
part, coming from as far away as Belfast, Dublin, and
Kildare. We started the morning off by meeting many
Cartoon characters that kids love like The Minions,
Peppa Pig etc… before being led onto the field of play
marching behind a Pipe band, this was a novel thing for
all the girls and we suspect may have been the
highlight of the day for many!
Our first match, we encountered St Colmans from East
Cork. Although we dominated the first half, we went in
at half time trailing 1 goal to 2 points, the goal coming
against the run of play. However the girls dug in for the
second half and emerged victorious by taking their
scores when they came.
The second match against Kanturk was a show of
strength from our girls as we dominated both halves
and it was great to see the interplay between all
players.
Our third group game turned out to be the group
decider game against the famed Sarsfield club from
Kildare. This was a fantastic contest between 2 hugely
committed teams, Valleys led 1.1 to 2 points at half
time and a superb rear-guard display in the second half
ensured that no score was conceded to win the game
and with it our group.
This really was a coming of age from this group of
individuals who came together and became a team
who, when their backs were to the wall, showed a
fantastic will to win through their ability to fight for
every ball, support their team-mates, use of the ball
when they got it, and take their scores when the
opportunity presented itself. We had panel of 28 girls
on the day (6 unable to make it), each got a minimum
of 3 half games each and every one contributed on the
day. A thanks also to the parents who travelled on the
day, I think every child had either a mother or father
present, this is what the GAA is all about, and each
child’s performance rose 25% with the knowledge that
their parents were looking on.
