GUIDELINES Must be at no cost to the government (10 U.S. Code

Section 7545) Typical removal/recovery costs are within budgeted disposal

costs Entire submarine cannot be donated due to security

and classification restrictions NAVSEA authorization required for structures such as

sails or rudders Removed only during recycling availability – typically 5-15

years after inactivation/decommissioning NAVSEA works with the Naval History and Heritage

Command (NHHC) to approve transfers The Curator of the Navy has right of first refusal for items

under consideration

GUIDELINES NHHC is direct POC for non-structural artifacts such

as awards/plaques, ship's bell, silverware, etc. – NAVSEA authorization not required

Requestor is responsible for shipping, transportation, site setup, and installation

Requesting organization must be non-profit or government entity

Requesting organization must have clear title to site or city/town approval in writing Must include commitment to maintain item and site in

condition befitting a memorial and US Navy Site plan and proof of title must be submitted to

NAVSEA for approval

TRANSFERS

Typical transfer request is for a submarine’s sail and upper rudder

Transfer of other equipment is dependent on demilitarization and declassification requirements
