The gift that keeps costing

Well, another summer is behind us, and fall loomslarge ahead. Before it gets too far behind us, I want

to reflect briefly on the month of August, which was high-lighted by Nantucket Race Week. As a sailor, I considermyself fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend acouple of days out on the twelve-meter Columbia, fol-lowed up by an invitation to participate in the OperaHouse Cup on yet another gorgeous boat named BlackWatch. It’s a nice pair of boats, to say the least.

The Opera House Cup is a pretty amazing race with anequally amazing history. Among other things, it’s one of thelargest all-wooden sailboat regattas in the world. I recently hearda pretty famous sailor talking about his love of older woodenboats, which he contrasted with today’s more modern boats thatwere, he said, “like floating condominiums.”

Not to take anything away from the beauty of those yachts,but he’s right. Today’s modern sailboats have got it all; amazinginteriors with all of the amenities of home are commonplace. Inother words, they’re floating homes.

And trust me when I tell you that these are homes I wouldvery much not mind living in. And I’m thinking that I’m not theonly one out there. Think of the benefits. You’ve got a beautifulhome with an amazing view. Your neighbors are usually prettyfriendly and like-minded folks. And if you get tired of whereveryou happen to find yourself at a given moment, you can pull upthe anchor and move. What’s not to love?

Yep, it’s that time of year again.The time of year when I startlooking at the prices of live-aboard sailboats and dreaming ofcruising south when things around here get a little chilly for myaging bones. And being a sailor, the whole thing just sounds per-fect.

But there’s one little catch. Actually, there is a really, really bigcatch, and that would be the price of the little gem. All thingsbeing equal however, and in a world where purchase price isn’t anissue, there’s still one little catch.The problem is this: When youget down to it, once you’ve got the boat, that’s just the beginningof your costs, because things tend to break down and wear out,no matter how well you take care of them.

Bill Pew, the former owner of Bill Fisher Tackle, once told acustomer that, if wanted to buy a boat, he should start flushinghundred-dollar-bills down the toilet. Each time he did it, heshould watch the bill go all the way down. When he could dothat without feeling the urge to reach in and grab it before it wentdown the drain, he was ready to buy a boat.

And while buying a house isn’t quite the same as a boat, thereare a lot of expenses associated with home ownership that youmight not be expecting when you sign on the dotted line at thebank. Just like with my boat – or the one I keep seeing myself in,anyway – there always seems to be something popping up thatneeds fixing. And I’m not talking about burnt-out light bulbs.

There are the annual things – turning on and off the water tothe outdoor shower, for example – and then there are the stan-dard things that don’t take you too much by surprise – like thosepesky light bulbs. But then there are the big things that sneak upon you if you’re not paying attention. Painting the trim or replac-ing the shingles come to mind. And then there are the realdoozies that nobody expects.The recent meteorological unpleas-antness we endured is a perfect example.Not too many of us planto get our house – or our boat, for that matter – struck by light-ning. But it happens. And while insurance might pay for a lot ofthose repairs, that pesky insurance bill keeps coming in the mailand has to get paid.

The message here is not intended to scare you off of buying ahouse. However, it’s important to understand what you’re gettingyourself in to before you buy. Buying a house is one of the mostexpensive decisions you’ll ever make, especially if you’re buying ahouse here on Nantucket. And a lot of us scrimp and save everynickel we can find in order to buy it, which doesn’t leave us a lotof extra reserve cash to spend should something go wrong.

So no, my message to you today is not to avoid buying yourown home.Rather, I’m just trying to get you to think about keep-ing a little something set aside for a rainy day – literally and fig-uratively – because that day will inevitably come. And you don’twant to be on the short end of that stick.

Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did they teach you?There really isn’t one person. My family has always said that we are capable of doinganything we want, if we put our minds to it.And, you must love what you do and behappy doing it, because life is just too short otherwise.

What do you listen to, watch and/or read to find out what’s goingon in the world?My Yahoo home page offers five headlines from several major news organiza-tions like USA today, New York Times, BBC World, Reuters, etcetera. So, Iusually scan through those every morning to see what’s going on.

What do you do to unwind? I think going to the beach is the perfect way to unwind and recharge my bat-teries.We have the most incredible beaches here. So, you’re never short ofsomewhere to go!

Are you reading anything interesting now?I just bought “The Last Resort” by Douglas Rogers. I grew up inZimbabwe and my family still live there, so I love reading books aboutAfrica. I just went to a talk at the library the other night by DouglasRogers on his new book and am looking forward to reading it.

How would you spend your ideal day?At the beach!

Who would you choose to be shipwrecked on a desert island with?My husband, Rob Morgenstern.

If you could re-live a day of your life again,which would it be and why?Probably my wedding day. My family flew from Zimbabwe,Argentina,Florida and New York to be with us, and it was just the perfect day.

What is your favorite beach on Island?Fishermans used to be my favorite and we got married there. But now Ithink I prefer Great Point and Smith’s Point, as they’re not as crowded.

What is your Favorite Walk?I enjoy walking in the moors and Sanford Farm.

What is your Favorite Island Meal?Is it bad if I have more than one? Lobsters cooked at Souza’s, the lobster tostada’s at Corazon, and TunaMartini’s at the Pearl. Oh, and the ‘chicken fried’ lobster at American Seasons. I like food a lot!

What do you do on a day off?My goal is usually to get to the beach with a bunch of magazines and a good book.

Samantha Parsons was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe.After college, she worked in the travel industry in bothZimbabwe and South Africa, where she traveled the world extensively with her work.With a passion for traveling, Sammoved to London, where she worked and traveled worldwide for two years. Sam arrived on Nantucket for the sum-mer in 1995, and as many people do, immediately fell in love with the Island. She has lived here year ’round since1997.Two years after arriving on Nantucket, she met her husband, Rob Morgenstern, who created the NantucketBottle Opener and Nantucket Wine-Signs. After 8 years working at the Nantucket Boat Basin and Nantucket IslandResorts, Sam worked as the Director of Membership Services at The Westmoor Club. Her goal during that time,among many other responsibilities, was to ensure the excellence of members’ services and to exceed both membersand guests expectations, something which she is proud to acknowledge as having achieved, and something that sheenjoys doing with her clients at Great Point Properties.
