BODY SURFING

Askill that ocean beach lifeguards getby default, choosing this physicallydemanding cousin of surfing and

boogie boarding should not be withoutsome contemplation. You are one with awave, literally, as long as you can get out toit on your own

WHERE TO GOOcean: Tom Nevers to Madaket.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Lowpressure system-driven swells from thesouth, including offshore tropical storms orhurricanes. That, combined with northerlywinds — blowing offshore — make for nice, glassy smooth breaks.

PERFECT FOR Waterman purists whowant to use nothing but human locomotion— aided by fins — and human floatation tocatch and ride waves.

LEARNING CURVE Half the battle ishaving the physical strength to swim outbeyond the breaking waves and, treadingwater with fin-enhanced legs, jockey forposition to swim after a wave. The otherhalf is actually catching the wave and ridingit in.

GEAR UP Bathing suit and boogie board-ing fins.

WHY ME? Since frolicking in the waves isa rite of summer, pretty much everyonewithout a surfboard or boogie board charg-ing into the surf on Nantucket’s south shoreis body surfing back to the beach whetherthey know it or not. However, you’re outthere because you’re strong enough to surfwithout a board and love doing it.

X-FACTOR Surfers and boogie boardershave their boards for floantation tetheredto their legs by a leash and a Velcro cuff.Youhave a winter’s worth of pizza, beer and icecream around your middle. And then thereare the rip currents, tides and big waveswith which to contend. Fitness and swim-ming ability is key.

LESSONS & RENTALS You will need tolearn as you go and read up on the sportafter buying a good pair of fins at Force 5Watersports, 6 Union St., 228-0700. IndianSummer Sports, 6 Broad St. Jetties Beach,228-3632. The Sunken Ship, 12 Broad St.,228-9226.

ON THE WATER GUIDEON THE WATER GUIDERReeccrreeaattiioonnvvNANTUCKET

Surfing’s little brother, also called bodyboarding, means riding a foam board face down on the samewaves that surfers live for and is one step up from

bodysurfing. More the domain of younger wave riders, boogie boarders need less of a wave for riding andtherefore can utilize smaller waves than surfers.

WHERE TO GOOcean: Tom Nevers to Madaket.Sound: Kick boarding use for children only.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Low pressure sys-tem-driven swells from the south, including offshoretropical storms or hurricanes. That, combined withnortherly winds — blowing offshore — make for verynice, glassy smooth breaks.

PERFECT FOR Bodysurfers seeking a longer ride onlarger waves, surfing hopefuls looking for a feel for pad-dling out and riding waves and adult children who justwant to play in the south shore waves.

LEARNING CURVE Anyone who has ever body-surfed or tried to can pick this up in the first try: lie onboard, paddle out to waves, when suitable wave comes, turn around and paddle vigorously toward shore.

GEAR UP Boogie board, fins, paddle gloves, wetsuitand/or rash guard, swim trunks and sunblock.

WHY ME? Boogie boarding is simple, relatively cheapto get into, super easy to learn and provides instantgratification.

X-FACTOR Nantucket’s surfers are relatively lax onwave and break protection, quite the opposite of manyplaces on the West Coast and in Hawaii where surfersfiercely defend their local breaks. Boogie boarders, whichsurfers refer to as spongers, would do well not to cut offsurfers, each other and anyone else trying to ride waves. If you see someone already going down a wave or justabout to catch one, hang back and wait for the next one.

LESSONS & RENTALS There are no boogie boardrentals on the island, but boards and the necessaryequipment at available at: Force 5 Watersports, 6 UnionSt., 228-0700. Indian Summer Sports, 6 Broad St. JettiesBeach, 228-3632. The Sunken Ship, 12 Broad St., 228-9226.

FISHING

Fishing in its many forms is as old as thehuman race. First a necessity for theNative Americans who arrived

between 8,000 and 11,000 years ago andlater, it’s a sport that pays scaly but yummydividends. It’s almost impossible to makeone’s way around the island without seeingsigns of fishing on people’s clothing, carbumpers and racks, in grocery bags and onboats and wharves. Nantucket is an amazingspot for saltwater fishing — the active fisherhas access to blues and stripers from beach-es and boats, can fish for larger species welloffshore, in the Canyons, on the edge of theContinental Shelf or can spend the day lazi-ly angling for freshwater species.

WHERE TO GOHarbor: All threePonds: All of them.Ocean: Definitely.Sound: Yes.

CONDITIONS All over the map andspecies specific at the same time, but threehours before and after low tide is a widelyfollowed rule.

PERFECT FOR You name it.

LEARNING CURVE You mean you’re daddidn’t teach you? Literally a national pastimein which old salts imbue the novices withbasics, which are essentially casting the lureand reeling it in. For bluefish, cast out fromshore as far as you can and reel in rapidly isabout all you need to know. For striped bass, false albacore, bonito and Spanish mackerel— nuances of lure choice, reeling speed, lureplacement, jerking the line and weather andtide need to be absorbed and practicedrepeatedly. Pond fishing is learn-as-you-go.

GEAR UP Rod, reel, pole, lures, hookremover, tackle box, beverages and patience.

WHY ME? Like quahogging, squid jiggingand dangling poultry wings for crabs, there’sfree delicious local food out in our water-ways to be caught by the intrepid fishermanhungry for a taste of the island.

X-FACTOR Seals, vagaries of weather, tides and water temperature, and levels ofpollution in the harbors and ponds. Anevening alone on the south shore, castinginto the surf, can soothe the soul.

LESSONS & RENTALS There aredozens of charter fishing boats and fishingguides operating out of Nantucket’s harbors— too numerous to list here. Get recom-mendations from the island’s four tackleshops. Nantucket Tackle Center (228-4081)at 41 Sparks Ave. Bill Fisher Tackle (228-2261) at 127 Orange St. Brant Point Marine(228-6244) at 32 Washington St; and CrossRip Outfitters at 228-4900.

KAYAKING

Without a boat, Nantucket’s har-bors and ponds are inaccessibleto all but the best swimmers. If

you lack the desire to rent a powerboat tosee the island’s amazing waterways, paddlinga kayak is the coolest and most satisfyingmode of water transport there is.Thank theInuit people of the Arctic and the Aleuts ofthe Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaskafor designing and building the first kayaks, which they used for hunting marine mam-mals and fishing. Fishing from a kayak is def-initely an option in Nantucket waters, butlearn the kayaking part first.

WHERE TO GOHarbors: All of them.Ponds: Sesachacha, Hummock, Miacomet,Long, Coskata and Maxcy ponds.Ocean: Yes for intermediates to experts.Sound: Advanced beginners throughexperts; Along the outer edge of Coatueclose to shore and along the north shorebetween the west jetty and Eel Point, out toTuckernuck and Muskeget Islands

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Ideally, calm to winds 5-10 mph during the summerand early fall.

PERFECT FOR Eco-tourists and thoseseeking a view of the island, the sunset, starsor moonrise from the water.

LEARNING CURVE If you can paddle acanoe or a row a dinghy, you can paddle akayak on the first try.

GEAR UP Kayak, paddle, personal floata-tion device, boat pump, paddle float and awhistle are the basics. Wear a bathing suitand or wetsuit, water shoes or rubber san-dals and a waterproof shell, warm clothing, food and water.

WHY ME? You often use a bike on land toget around the island, and kayaking is a nat-ural water-borne extension of your lifestyle.

X-FACTOR Exponentially, many morepeople have the same idea, but using com-mercial and recreational powerboats.Picking the safest, traffic- and current-freeroute beforehand and knowing the tide andwhere you’re going is prudent.

A C O N V E R S AT I O N W I T HKITEBOARDERALENA DERBY DE PAZ

BY MORGAN PILE

Asmall community has grown over the past few years onisland around a sport that is almost as thrilling to watchas it is to do.The sport is kiteboarding, and it captivates

beachgoers lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the action.Pilates instructor Alena Derby de Paz is an active summer par-ticipant in the kiteboarding community that, she says, is other-wise comprised of around two dozen year-round faithfuls andswells significantly in the summer months.

An adventure sport enthusiast, Derby de Paz first got into kite-boarding five years ago, while searching for her next adrenalinrush. “I had been really into snowboarding and skiing and hadtaken some paragliding lessons, “ she says. “So, the first time Isaw a kite with a board attached to it, I was hooked.” She begantaking lessons in Cape Hatteras, N.C.“My first lesson was hard, and it hurt,” she says. But she kept at it, kiteboarding year-round in the waters around Charleston, S.C. in the winter andNantucket in the summer.

In July and August, Derby de Paz can be found with the grouplaunching from Pocomo Point and kiting across the open waterto near Bass Point, off Coatue. In September, when winds getstronger, the kiters venture to Madaket, Madequecham for thewaves, and Jetties Beach, depending on the wind.

“It’s completely exhilarating. There is nothing else out there likeit,” says Derby de Paz.

ON THE WATER GUIDEON THE WATER GUIDERReeccrreeaattiioonnvvNANTUCKET

KITEBOARDINGProbably the youngest of all these water sports.Although using

kites for power on land and water goes back to the 1800s,kitesurfing is also a hybrid of several sports including boat-tow-

ing sports including waterskiing and wakeboarding, kite flying andskydiving. Employing a giant kite-like, elongated airfoil attached toharness for power, kiteboarders traverse the water on a board sim-ilar to the unidirectional wakeboard. Controlling the kite with ametal control bar attached to the kite by its lines, kiteboarders rock-et across the wind, upwind and downwind. Nantucket’s kiteboardingcommunity loves the waters in and around the island because whenthe wind is blowing, there’s always a great place to kite, especially atPocomo Point.

WHERE TO GOHarbors: Pocomo Point, off the Jetties, Madaket Harbor and over tothe east end of Tuckernuck Island Ocean: Intermediate to expert along the south shore.Sound: Intermediate to expert on North shore of the island and onthe outside of Coatue.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Kitesurfers like to launch fromPocomo Point because no matter what direction the wind is blow-ing, they can ride their boards back and forth to Coatue and up anddown the harbor.

PERFECT FOR Waterskiers, wake-boarders, knee-boarders andall other water-sport junkies practiced at riding some form of boardover water at high speeds.

LEARNING CURVE Actually billed as easier to learn than wind-surfing because use of the kite or, airfoil, is easily taught on land. Also, recovery from water spills happens quickly with the kite pulling rid-ers up and out of the water. On-the-water turns are relatively sim-ple to master.

GEAR UP Bring your own gear — kite, harness and board, as thereis no place to rent on the island.

WHY ME? Your first and only skydiving adventure left you cravingthat soaring feeling but without the hard landing. Flying over waves, flat water and into the air is calling your name.

X-FACTOR The cost of equipment can be prohibitively expensive.Rent or borrow it first.Avoid winds blowing offshore.

LESSONS & RENTALS Currently, there are no kitesurfing les-sons and rentals offered on Nantucket.

On land and in our waters, there is somuch local food to harvest. You couldalmost find half your grocery list with-

out entering any of the grocery stores. Quahogsshould be one of those items, as they are every-where in the harbor and so easy to get. Popularraw as cherrystones served with cocktail sauce, stuffed and baked at medium size and the largerones minced for chowder and fish stews, quahiogs are easy to find, typically located bare-ly below the surface of the sandy harbor bot-tom or partially sticking above. While raking forthem between Coatue and First Point, and offMonomoy, you’ll quickly become adept at feelingthem with your bare feet.

WHERE TO GOHarbors: Nantucket, Madaket and Tuckernuck.Ponds: Coskata.

CONDITIONS Low tide or thigh-deep waterduring the summer.

PERFECT FOR Makers and eaters of chow-der, stuffed quahogs, cherrystones on the halfshell and steamed quahogs, and New Englandseafood junkies in general.

SAILING

You can’t swing a bowline aroundNantucket’s waterfront without hit-ting someone who sails or at least

knows someone who does.As synonymouswith Nantucket as fishing, sailing should be arequired island skill. Already a spring sportat Nantucket High School, sailing is olderthan European settlement of the island, which certainly relied on sail power for thefirst 27 Nantucketers to get here in 1659.

WHERE TO GOHarbors: All threePonds: Smaller boats, dinghies with sailsand, see Nat Philbrick’s book, “SecondWind” on sailfish sailing in the ponds.Ocean: YesSound: Yes

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS 10 to 15mph in Nantucket Sound is the preferablewind speed for cruising without too muchwork.A little less in the harbor where small-er boats can get around well on low winds.

PERFECT FOR Mariners and other sea-faring wannabes who want a tiller in onehand and the main sheet in the other whilecharging around the Opera House Cup’striangular course in the Sound, saunteringdownwind for a picnic on Coskata or gentlydrifting out on a calm evening for the sun-set.

LEARNING CURVE With NantucketCommunity Sailing, both yacht clubs andseveral other outfits committed to sharingtheir love of wind-powered boating, basicsailing skills are as easy to acquire andabsorb as mosquitoes in Madaket.

GEAR UP Sailboat, personal floatationdevice, map of the island harbors, food, water, sunblock and appropriate, weather-dependent clothing.

WHY ME? Inhaling engine fumes is part offlying/driving to the island and around it, butit doesn’t have to be for your on-the-waterexperience. Seeing the harbors andNantucket Sound while hearing only wateragainst the hull, with wind ruffling your sailsand smelling the briny perfume of saltwatermakes Nantucket for you.

X-FACTOR Learn in the harbor, practicein the sound, but mind the currents, shoalsand other boaters.

SURF KAYAKING

Ahybrid of river kayaking and surfing, paddling a kayak that can eitherresemble a whitewater river rapids

kayak or be a thicker version of surfboardwith three skegs on the bottom, foot loops, thigh straps and a concave surface for yourbutt on top, surf kayaking is, for the skilled,a fantastic way to catch waves quickly andget longer rides.

WHERE TO GOOcean: Tom Nevers to Madaket.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS An off-shore wind and nice swells are ideal for surfkayaking. If you’re looking for a less rigoroussea kayaking experience, then head outwhen the water is calm, the current is fine, and the wind is not too strong.

PERFECT FOR River junkies withbumper stickers on their Subarus reading“Life is a Mountain, Not a Beach” and any-one else who would rather ride waves sit-ting down.

LEARNING CURVE Steep. First learn tohandle a river kayak in rapids or a sea kayakin choppy waves and strong currents, andthen seek out an experienced kayaker topaddle out with.

GEAR UP A river kayak, paddle, helmet, spray skirt, personal flotation device with awhistle attached to it and a wetsuit or rashguard.

WHY ME? You live in the mountains butspend time on the coast and the springrunoff was just too quick this year. Or surf-ing is too much work for so few waves andsuch short rides.

X-FACTOR Paddling in the surf means theability to get out well away from shorewhere fog, tidal currents, large gray seals, powerboats and now, sharks, can make yoursurf kayaking experience an interesting one. Also, cutting off surfers, boogie boardersand others vying for waves is bad juju.

SKIMBOARDING

Born in Southern California at LagunaBeach where so many other oceanboard sports thrive, lifeguards invent-

ed skimboarding as a way to get down thebeaches quickly. Although the epicenter ofthe sport is widely considered to be DeweyBeach, Del. where the East CoastSkimboarding Championships are held inmid-August, Nantucket’s south shore rivalsthat Delaware beach with steep enoughswash zones for good momentum andample breaking waves with good waterdepth for all the tricks and fewer wipeouts. On the north shore, you can practice yourcraft in a flatter, tamer setting.

WHERE TO GOHarbor: Yes, Jetties Beach.Ponds: Maybe Sesachacha and Miacomet.Ocean: Tom Nevers to Madaket.Sound: Eel Point to Jetties Beach.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Waves breaking on the beach.

PERFECT FOR Surfers-in-training work-ing on their balance and wave-riding skills, grommets and those who prefer playing inthe waves closer to shore.

LEARNING CURVE Board riders on allmediums — water, asphalt and snow— willfeel at home on a skimboard. All othersshould watch, learn and ask.

GEAR UP Skimboard, bathing suit andrash guard (optional).

WHY ME? You’re not ready for riding thebig waves off shore, so pulling “ollies” and“shove-its” on the wave wash safely atwater’s edge is a great way to ease into thetricks you’ll eventually be ripping once youstart your surfing career.

X-FACTOR The film of water left by thereceding wave that’s just broken on whichyou’ll be skimming over naturally followsthe contours of the beach, but the uneven-ness and widely varying grade of Nantucketbeaches can cause wipeouts and injury.

SQUID JIGGING

Literally like shooting fish in a barrel, jig-ging for squid is as easy as dangling afluorescent yellow, orange or green

lure with its sharp spines jutting upward andoutward from a length of monofilament intothe harbor water. The squid are attracted tothe lights on the town pier and otherwharves around the island. When they seethe lure and swarm around it, a simpleupward jerking motion is all you need tobring home the ingredients for calamarisalad, fried, sautéed, pickled or baked squid.Or, use them for bait to catch Stripers.

WHERE TO GOHarbor: Town pier or Steamboat, Straightand Swain’s Wharves on Nantucket Harbor.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Nighttime during the summer.

PERFECT FOR Curious children andtheir parents, fishermen needing bait andhungry home cooks seeking a taste of localseafood.

LEARNING CURVE Blue-claw crab fish-ers will have no trouble. Newbies need onlyknow how to watch others do it.

GEAR UP Find squid jigs at island tackleshops and Brant Point Marine.Attach themto about 20 feet of fishing monofilament lineand wrap the line around a wooden dowelor stick and, voilà, instant squid jig rig.

WHY ME? Island restaurants can’tapproach the savory level of delectable cala-mari you’re going to make with a bucket fullof Atlantic long-finned squid. Nor can theymake it so cheaply.

X-FACTOR Squid spray their indelibledark ink when agitated. Under water, theink, clouding it for an instant, allows thesquid to escape becoming a meal. On land, think tie-dye accident. Nantucket’s policeroust squid-jiggers from wharves when theyget too crowded or in response to com-plaints of inked boats. Dress appropriately. In other words, squid-jig in clothing that youdon’t care about.

STAND UP PADDLING

What will they think of next?Actually, stand-up paddling isnothing new. Resuscitated by

big-wave surfers Laird Hamilton and DaveKalama in the early 1960s, the Beach Boysof Waikiki began using outrigger canoe pad-dles to paddle their surfboards out to takephotos of people learning to surf. Today, thanks to Laird and Dave, SUP, as it’s nick-named, is a recreational as well as a compet-itive distance paddling sport and new surfingcompetition category in many coastallocales.

WHERE TO GOHarbor: All three.Ponds: All of them.Ocean: Yes.Sound: Yes.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Flat, calmwater

PERFECT FOR Surfers learning to use apaddle while surfing, and everyone elselooking for a new, chill way to see the har-bors, ponds and sound, and to tighten uptheir abdominal muscles.

LEARNING CURVE Standing up andstaying up is 70 percent of the process.Developing your core muscles to maintainyour balance and help your arms and shoul-ders move the paddle is the other 30.

GEAR UP Stand-up surfboard, paddle andpersonal flotation device.

WHY ME? Kayaks and other boats requiretoo much gear and expense. The peace andquiet of paddling a ginormous, oversizedsurfboard through the Creeks is what youneed in order to decompress from an islandon the spin cycle.

Justin Schaeffer began surfing on thebeaches of Nantucket on a six-footRainbow when he was barely seven

years old. The board was short by agrown man’s standards, but big for afirst-grader.“The first day I took it outI could barely carry it — it almost blewme over,” he says. “But it was a greatboard.” He remembers it vividly: “pur-ple rails, grey bag with red canvas straps.”

Schaeffer first got into surfing for the samereason most children do anything. “All theolder kids were doing it,” he said.“It was likewatching the varsity team from the stands. Iwanted to get involved.” It wasn’t alwayseasy. With no surf school and a small surfingcommunity, Justin largely taught himself, struggling for two years, he says, until hestarted to see real improvement.

Schaeffer credits those early years withteaching him patience for weather andwaves, but also with forcing his maturity. “Itmade me grow up,” he says.“When you areon the water, age doesn’t matter.A 10 yearold talks to a 20 year old.A 20 year old talksto a 40 year old.As a kid, you start thinkingof yourself as older.”

As Schaeffer grew up on thewater, so did Nantucket’s surfingscene. According to Schaefferthe community has grown anestimated 10 times what it wasover the past 15 years. By thetime he reached college, hefound a real desire from thefrom beachgoers to learn the

sport. “People kept approaching me andasking for lessons,” he says. So, he decid-ed to spearhead his own operation, whichhe called ’Sconset Surf. With a few friendshired to join him, Schaeffer ran SconsetSurf for seven years, stopping only whenhe accepted a job in Boston after gradu-ating from college.

With his time on the island now limited toweekends and occasional vacations,Schaeffer still makes time to hit the surf —but not necessarily for the killer wavesthat Nantucket beaches have to offer.“Thesurfing, itself, is fun,” he says, “But the bestpart is about the people. It’s like a broth-erhood out there — a great thing to be apart of.”

With its roots in Hawaii and its branchesextending all around the world, wherev-er there’s a good break, surfers will pad-

dle out. Nantucket’s surfing community surfs year-round with many traveling to surfing spots in the offseason, that include Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Hawaiiand the South Pacific. Nantucket’s south shorebeaches are the perfect summertime venue forlearning to surf, honing skills and playing in the sunand waves — a complete package for soothing anyworkday ill.

WHERE TO GOOcean: From Tom Nevers to Madaket.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Low pressuresystem-driven swells from the south, including off-shore tropical storms or hurricanes. That, combinedwith northerly winds — blowing offshore — makefor very nice, glassy smooth breaks.

PERFECT FOR Surfers of all levels.

LEARNING CURVE Relatively long and steep, assurfing is another water sport grounded in balance, especially when popping up on the board once youcatch a wave and while standing on the board. Upperbody strength is vital for paddling out through breakingwaves and for paddling vigorously to catch waves.

GEAR UP Surfboard, surf wax, wetsuit and sunblock.

WHY ME? The feeling one gets while surfing is anindescribable high, but there are the bonuses of theintense physical workout and deep tan. It’s all aboutlearning how to “operate in the present.”

X-FACTOR Surfing requires patience, physicalstrength and dedication. But once you master it, theonly other challenges to worry about are the jelly-fish, strong rip currents and other surfers compet-ing for waves at prized breaks. Take a lesson fromthe year-round surf pack already out there and giveway when you see someone is just about to catch awave or already has. On-the-water courtesy winsfriends and can save your life.

WAKEBOARDINGBilled as the natural evolution of snow-

boarding but on the water, wake-boarding came into being in the late

1980s when several people on differentparts of the planet dreamed up similarideas. Originating in Scotland and called“Skurfing,” extreme sports pro LochlanSnowie loaned his Skurf board to Jeff Darbyand some friends in Queensland, Australiawho continued the evolution of this newwater board.Tony Finn later put into com-mercial production the early wakeboard.Around the same time, fellow Aussie andsurfboard shaper/inventor Bruce McKeeand Mitchell Ross invented the first mass-produced plastic “Skurfboard”.And in 1983,Howard Jacobs of Jacksonville, Fla. modifieda short surfboard with windsurfer footstraps bolted onto them.

WHERE TO GOSound and Nantucket and Madaket harbors.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Likewaterskiing, the flatter the better, but smallwaves foster more tricks.

PERFECT FOR Single-ski waterskierswho want to advance their acrobatic waterrepertoire to a level unobtainable on water-skis and anyone who already skateboards, surfs and/or snowboards who want toexplore yet another board sport medium.

LEARNING CURVECan you water ski? If yes, then there’s a brieflearning curve. If not, prepare to splashdown a lot.

GEAR UP Wakeboard, towrope, swimtrunks and personal flotation device.

WHY ME? Being dragged around behind apowerboat on skis — one or two — is put-ting you to sleep, and you want the versatil-ity of movement on the water and in the airabove it that wakeboarding offers. You’refearless and need another adrenaline rush.

“I don’t really do a lot of organized sports,” says Nate Merrill.“Windsurfing is what I do to release energy and zone out, while beingplugged into the waves and the weather.” Director of NantucketCommunity Sailing’s Jetties program, Merrill is an avid sailor and self-pro-claimed lover of all wind sports. But if you ask him to pick sailing versuswindsurfing, he may chose windsurfing.“It is a much cleaner form of sail-ing,” he says.“There is less clutter. It is much faster and free.”

It’s no wonder Nate is so enthusiastic about the sport. He first startedwhen he was just four or five, hanging off of his mother’s board while shesurfed the waves of Woods Hole and Nantucket and picked it up on hisown “a little later.” Over the years, Merrill has windsurfed at dozens ofbeaches across globe. He counts among his favorite wind and surf loca-tions Metunick, RI, Davenport, MA and, of course, Nantucket.

Throughout his career, Merrill became an expert in executing the widerange of activity that windsurfing offers, including jumps and “front loops”and “back loops.” He also constantly seeks out what is called planing: theact of skimming the surface of the water while under sail. Planing isextremely difficult to achieve while sailing, but it is one of the true joys ofwindsurfing, which is another component that Merrill believes sets thesport apart. “It is something to aspire to while sailing, and windsurfingmakes it easy,” he says.

WINDSURFING

Windsurfing, also called sail board-ing and boardsailing, has onlybeen around since 1968. Two

southern Californians, sailor Jim Drake andsurfer Hoyle Schweitzer, merged a surfboardwith a sail by mounting it on a board modifiedwith a universal joint that allowed steering inany direction. By the 1970s, Schweitzer wasmass-producing his and Drake’s windsurfer.Today, windsurfing is a billion-dollar industrywith competitions held worldwide and as anOlympic sport. On Nantucket, with its five-mile-long harbor, warm waters and moderatewinds, conditions for beginners and expertsalike are ideal.

WHERE TO GOHarbors: Pocomo Point, Wauwinet, JettiesBeach and Madaket.Ponds: All skill levels in Sesachacha Pond.Ocean: Experts only off the south shorefor wave jumping.Sound: All skill levels off Nantucket’s northshore.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONSRequires winds blowing at least 5-10 knots,5.7-11.5 mph required. Nantucket’s prevail-ing winds are from the southwest during thesummer, and these winds are frequently 10-15 mph or higher. The higher winds occurwith some regularity, keeping experts andthose advancing in their skills happy.

PERFECT FOR All water sport loverswho want exercise while seeing the islandfrom the water. With some equipment mak-ers producing child-size windsurfers, the agerange starts at around five years old.

LEARNING CURVELong and steep if balance is an issue. Corestrength and knowledge of sailing basics aremust-haves.

GEAR UP Since equipment can be pricey, lessons and rental boards are the way to goat first. At the bare minimum, you will needswimwear and/or a rash guard or light wet-suit, depending on water temperature, lifepreserver and water shoes.

WHY ME? Because you love the thrill, freedom and simplicity of skimming acrosswarm Nantucket waters.

X-FACTOR Balance and some reasonablelevel of physical fitness are key to this hybridsport. Each novice reacts differently tosteering a surfboard fitted with a small sailon sometimes choppy waters. Crowdedharbors can add to that challenge.

PARASAILINGParasailing is a recent addition to

Nantucket’s water activities. Its rootsare grounded in France where the

parasail controllable parachute was inventedin 1961. But it was Mark McCulloh in Miami,Fla. who came up with the idea for pulling aparasail behind a boat with a winch on itused to control the height of the parasail.

WHERE TO GO Sound

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS The calmerthe winds and the water, the smoother yourlaunch from the boat and your ride above thewater.

PERFECT FOR Summer revelers seekinga water sport experience that’s divergentlyunique among all others offered on theisland, and those who want unforgettablewater views.

LEARNING CURVE Trust is really all youneed. Once strapped into the harness, theparasail, wind and boat driver do all thework.

WHY ME? You can’t wait to go skydivingagain, but this will just have to do until youcan. Jumping out of an airplane was toomuch for you, and parasailing seems like asafer mode of dangling from somethingapproaching a parachute.

LEARNING CURVE Get over the factthat you are kneeling on a board blasting athigh speeds over the water, find your specif-ic balance on this unique board and you’llhave a ball fairly quickly. Or, you’ll do low-orbit, face-first cannonballs several dozentimes until you get it.

GEAR UP Kneeboard, personal flotationdevice, tow rope and powerboat.

WHY ME? Getting out of the water duringsummer on Nantucket to do anything otherthan eat, go to the Brewery and sleep is assacrilegious as ordering a Turkey Terrificfrom Provisions without the cranberrysauce. Kneeboarding is one more awesomereason for shriveled fingers.

X-FACTOR Good flexibility in your knees, which — it goes without saying — should beinjury-free, and a willingness to wipe out reg-ularly until you master it doesn’t hurt either.

LESSONS & RENTALS You’re UpWatersports, 508-332-0557.

Believe it or not, according to TimeMagazine, Princess Chumbhot ofNagar Svarga of Thailand conceived of

tubing in the mid-20th century. However, unlike the aforementioned watersports inwhich participants are able to use theirarms, legs and feet or, at least in oneinstance, their hips (while kneeling), tomaneuver around in the water, in tubing youare at mercy of the boat and the waves. Ifyou’re strong enough, you’ll at least be ableto hold on tightly enough to jump somewaves and maybe roll over a few times.

WHERE TO GO Harbor and Sound, between Eel Point and the west jetty.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Flat waterfor easy tubin’ and choppy seas for challeng-ing, bumpy rides.

PERFECT FOR Children, ages seven to 100.

LEARNING CURVE Next to nil.

GEAR UP One Gore-Tex covered giantinner tube with handles made for tubing.

WHY ME? Because it’s pure, unskilled, easyfun that’ll cool you off and make you laugh.

X-FACTOR Learning to love a bumpy waterride on your chest while tightly gripping handlesin a free weights curling position, with your legsflailing around on the water behind you.

LESSONS & RENTALS: Find your owntubes at Force 5 Watersports at 6 Union St.,228-0700 and the Sunken Ship at 12 BroadSt., 228-9226. Get lessons and take rideswith You’re Up Watersports, 508-332-0557.
