Flying High

Remember back in the

day when we all

thought that the 21st centu-

ry was going to be a time

when we were going to be

living on the moon and

driving flying cars? Robots

were going to be running

the show and we’d all have jetpacks to cruise around in? Well, it’s

not all science fiction. There was a recent Web video of a robot

soccer game that made the rounds, and some inventor from

Canada has begun production of the first jetpack designed to

allow humans to fly around.

Seriously. You’ll soon be able to buy a jetpack that can strap to

your back and lift you off the ground. According to news reports,

the inventor is a gentleman named Raymond Li, and his little cre-

ation uses water to propel the wearer at speeds of up to 25 mph

lift them to heights of 30 feet. It’s got a long hose attached to what

looks like a miniature boat. The boat vacuums water up into the

hose, which is connected to the jetpack, which the user is wear-

ing on his or her back. The jetpack shoots the water back out, cre-

ating 500 pounds of thrust and lifting the wearer off the water and

into the air.

Here’s the thing about this. Actually, two things. One: you

have to use it over water. Because the thrust is created with water,

if there’s no water, there’s no thrust. If there’s no thrust, there’s no

flying. And if there’s no flying, well, then, you just look silly

wearing this thing. Two: it costs a bunch. Initial reports are that

you can pre-order one for the bargain-basement price of

$136,000. Better just take two of those, huh?

It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist — or a jetpack inventor, for

that matter — to see where this is headed. You’ve got a very cool

gadget that is water-dependent and which costs a small fortune.

How much does somebody want to bet we see one of these little

treasures bombing around Nantucket Harbor this summer? Think

about it. Those little toys that top out at over a 100 feet and dock

along the wharf out there in the summer? Yeah, they’re the per-

fect launching pad for one of these things. Just wait and see.

So what’s the big deal? Some guy decides to go flying around

the harbor on an overpriced circus ride. That’s his business, right?

Yes, it is, but at the same time, there’s a wee-little issue of public

safety that needs to be considered. After all, Nantucket is a busy

place in the summer, with swimmers, sailors, power boaters,

kayakers, kiteboarders…you get the idea. Throw in a water-pro-

pelled jetpack, and you’re just asking for trouble.

I’m not necessarily one who’s keen on regulating everything,

but if I were in any kind of position of authority to do so, I’d be

acting a little proactively in this situation to nip this whole thing

in the bud before somebody gets it in their idea to try it out and

ends up hurting somebody. It’s not a question of trying to squash

somebody’s fun. Rather, it’s a question of trying to preserve an

iota of safety in an increasingly over-crowded space of water.

And on Nantucket, where we love our commissions, it might

even be wise to consider the formation of a waterfront commis-

sion to regulate exactly this kind of thing. In other words, a

Historic District Commission for the waterfront.

Say what you will about the HDC — and I know a lot of you out

there have plenty to say on both sides of the issue — but it does serve

a valuable purpose. Just as I’m not one to over-regulate things, I’m

also not one to cast dispersions on other towns. But I do feel relative-

ly confident in saying that I speak for the majority of Nantucket res-

idents when I say that we don’t want Nantucket to turn into a town

like our neighbors directly to the north, where just about anything

goes in terms of who can build what where.

Think about what downtown Nantucket would look like with-

out the HDC for a minute. Now think about whether or not that’s

how you want your home to look. If you think jetpacks are a bad

idea, imagine a Starbucks or two on Main Street, with a Gap and

a McDonald’s thrown in for good measure. A Walmart would

look pretty good on Straight Wharf — maybe we could knock out

the whole business district own there and make it a Super

Walmart.

I can live without that stuff, now that I think about it. So Mark

Voigt and Company, thanks for what you do. Now let’s see what

you can do about those soon-to-be-coming-to-a-harbor-near-us

jetpacks.

Andrew Spencer, a fifth-generation summer resident-turned-year-rounder, has been writing about Nantucket since movingto the island full-time in 2002. Michelle and the publishing company she chose to work for. You

see, Wiley is one of those big publishing houses that many of us

have supported with purchases, with a huge focus on education.

They’re the house behind, among other titles, the “For Dummies”

series. So if you’ve ever read one of those ubiquitous yellow-and-

black-covered paperbacks, you know Wiley. And that education-

al component dovetails perfectly with Michelle’s personality.

Despite having a budding career in New York City, Michelle

longed for a different life, specifically one on Nantucket. So she

returned to the island with the intention of pursuing her artistic

dreams as a painter. Economic realities required that she have a

more dependable source of revenue, though, and Michelle fell

back on her training as a graphic designer, one of the major com-

ponents of her degree in studio art. She started her own company,

doing public relations, fund raising and graphic design for local

businesses and non-profits. She then moved to Nantucket Cottage

Hospital, doing much the same work.

All this time, though, she had been volunteering with

Sustainable Nantucket. “And while I was doing volunteer work,”

she said, “the Executive Director position opened up, and I

jumped at the opportunity.” “The cause of Sustainable Nantucket

has always been close to my heart,” Michelle explained.

At about that point in our conversation, I had to plead igno-

rance as to what the “cause” of Sustainable Nantucket actually is.

In my own defense, there are so many nonprofits on the island,

it’s difficult for me to keep track of all of them. But Michelle was

very kind and understanding, and more than happy to explain.

“Our focus is on creating more locally-based and self-reliant food

systems on island and developing a strong local economy.” That

sounds like a pretty lofty goal, but I wondered how Sustainable

Nantucket pursued that end. “We advocate for greater local pro-

duction and connect consumers to locally-grown sources of

food,” she explained. “Education is a big part of what we do,” she

added.

I knew education had to be in there somewhere. And by “edu-

cation,” she doesn’t mean just teaching in the traditional sense of

the word. In addition to offering a host of workshops on topics

ranging from beekeeping to canning to composting, Sustainable

Nantucket also offers a farm-to-school program, whereby stu-

dents and volunteers work together to grow vegetables to be used

in school lunches and learn about the processes involved in grow-

ing and preserving vegetables. Sustainable Nantucket also spon-

sors the Farmers and Artisans Market, which is open on Saturday

mornings from June through October, and occupies the area at the

intersection of North Union and Cambridge Streets.

All of these programs keep the Executive Director on her toes

and busy. “There’s no average day around here,” Michelle said

while sitting in her office. “I’ve got so many balls in the air at one

time, and you never know what’s going to come over the tran-

som.” But she was quick to point out that Sustainable Nantucket

is blessed with a great team –— both paid and volunteer — who

support the mission, and an equally great Board of Directors who

help in every way possible.

And with two little ones at home — Michelle is the proud

mother of two children, aged four and one — her painting career

has taken a back seat. “I’m a member of the Artists’ Association

of Nantucket and I do paint when I can,” she said, “but I certain-

ly don’t get to paint as often as I’d like.”

But she wouldn’t change a thing, even if she had the chance:

“I’ve found my true calling,” Michelle said of her work with

Sustainable Nantucket. “Other than having children, working at

Sustainable Nantucket is the most challenging, rewarding and

fulfilling thing I’ve ever done.”

through a small grove of Hollywood trees

southwest of the farm.

Aside from its former vegetable fields, the

farm’s property includes the main house, a low,

rambling country house with a covered porch

fronting it and wrapping around half of its

sides. It was built in 1887.There is the also an

original saltbox-style barn, a one-bedroom

guest cottage and a small studio building.

Much of the main house’s interior remains

largely unaltered, with only minimal revisions

made to accommodate the necessities of mod-

ern living.

Coming several decades after the peak of

island farming on Nantucket, Fred and Eleanor

Maglathlin purchased Hollywood Farm in

1908. A map composed in 1946 by William E.

Gardner shows 97 working farms on Nantucket

in 1850, according to Debra A. McManis’

“Town Farms & Country Commons: Farming

on Nantucket”.

But the farming aspect of Hollywood Farm

for the Maglathlins happened not so much as

primary income for Fred and his first wife, it

was mostly for his second wife Evelyn’s subsis-

tence because Fred owned and ran both the

Milestone and Windswept cranberry bogs to

make his living. Fred had come to Nantucket in

the early 1900s to work at the 234-acre

Milestone bog. While working there, he devel-

oped and built the 105-acre Windswept

Cranberry Bog, hiring Marland “Red”

Rounsville of Cape Cod. Rounsville later took

over this bog from Maglathlin and sold it to the

Foundation, said Jim Lentowski, executive

director of the Nantucket Conservation

Foundation. The Foundation purchased 205

acres of Windswept in 1980 from the Nantucket

Construction Company (partially owned by

Rounsville) and several smaller parcels in the

years following.

Preparing this part of the island for cranber-

ry bogs was a difficult task, as reaching porous

soils for water to percolate through meant dig-

ging out the clay soil left behind at the bottom

of what was once Glacial Lake Sesachacha, a

body of glacial meltwater, around 20,000 years

ago. Sediments gradually filtering down from

Hollywood Farm, continued from page 1

the glacier’s bottom to the north and into the lake

formed the clay soils that Fred Maglathlin had to

remove before applying layers of sphagnum moss peat

to form a foundation for his cranberry bogs. Cranberry

plants grow best around sphagnum moss. In contrast,

the Milestone bogs were natural, already having sphag-

num moss growing in the remnants of a large swamp

formed by an eddy of the outwash from Glacial Lake

Sesachacha.

“When I first came here (in the 1970s), Hollywood

Farm was a small farm,” said Lentowski. “It was small

farm like Slosek’s was in the good old days.”

Although farming of the Maglathlin property —

including a milk cow herd pastured on the east side of

Polpis Road — ran parallel to Maglathlin’s cranberry

growing, it was only because of Evelyn that vegetables

were grown at all. According to Peterson, Evelyn had

moved to Nantucket from Plymouth, Mass., to tutor

Fred and Eleanor’s son. But, when Eleanor died, Fred

agreed to marry Evelyn with one condition.

“Evelyn Maglathlin, after the first wife died, (Fred)

Maglathlin, he offered her a place to live and a name,

but said ‘you must make your own living.’ So, that’s

why she started the vegetable garden and the jellies and

the bread, to make her own living,” said Peterson. “And

then he died, and then his son died. So, she was the only

one left.”

Peterson and her husband had always worked

Evelyn’s fields, and in 1969 purchased 3.3 acres at 321

Polpis Road from Maglathlin and built their house.

“We worked for her in the 60s and 70s. That’s how

we ended up out there,” said Peterson. “She let my hus-

band use her barn for an art studio. She wanted us to be

close to her.”

Still living out at her place on Polpis Road next to

Hollywood Farm — currently on the market for $2.6

million — Peterson, 78, remembers with pride that her

husband, an artist who died in 1980, painted the

Hollywood Farm sign for the barn.

“I’ve been here for 42 years, but she had us come out

here because we worked for and took care of her.

Actually, I had Cooper the plumber tell me once,

‘you’re just poor white trash, what are doing living out

here?”

Counting the Swains, Starbucks, Maglathlin,

Edward Sanford and the current owner, there have only

been five owners of this Hollywood Farm.

Edward Sanford owned and lived in the house from

1980 to 1989, purchasing it from the Estate of Fred and

Evelyn Maglathlin. Sanford updated the house, built an

addition onto the north side of it and repaired and ren-

ovated the small outbuildings. He recalls the roots of

farming still sprouting around him after acquiring the

property.

“I do know that they sold vegetables, and the reason

I know that is when I bought that place, people would

come into the driveway looking for vegetables,”

Sanford said.

Also in the basement of the main house, Sanford

found preserves, including many of the vegetables

grown on the farms, and canned peaches. Sanford

added that once Evelyn’s advanced age prevented her

from working her fields, she was buying produce from

other farms to sell at her own farm stand. Even after her

death, Peterson was able to leave an indelible mark on

Nantucket beyond the roadside farm stand and deli-

cious cranberry bread. And, Sanford helped with his

purchase of the property.

In her will, Evelyn Maglathlin decreed that the pro-

ceeds of the sale of her property be planted as seeds to

grow a scholarship for graduating seniors from

Nantucket High School. Maglathlin stipulated that the

Evelyn Maglathlin Scholarship Fund, now among 27

scholarships available to island students, would be for

the "benefit of worthy Nantucket High School graduat-

ing seniors and/or former Nantucket High School grad-

uates, both boys and girls, who are unmarried and wish

to have a higher education,” according to the Nantucket

High School.

Peterson may be the only Nantucketer who remem-

bers Evelyn for her cranberry bread, but today many

more islanders are learning about her generosity

through her legacy for island students.

PEOPLE

Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did they teach you?My daughters Corinne and Alina have been the biggest influ-ence on my life. Corinne, being the first child brought so muchjoy and love into my world and has shown me how precious life isand to seize the day. Since then, we agree that Alina is the best gift wehave ever received. An exchange I had with Alina has encouraged me to writeChildren's Books and as a family we are enjoying that journey. Corinne's quote “Gowith the flow and hold on to the wave,” is my favorite.

What was the first house you bought, and why? I lived in Manhattan for years prior tomoving to the island year-round.The firsthome I bought was a Co-op on the UpperWest Side between West End Avenue andRiverside Drive on 86th Street. I purchasedthat upon anticipation of my first daughterCorinne’s birth. I chose that location as it is a beautiful block, steps from RiversidePark and near the Children’s Museum and the Museum of Natural History. Since

moving to the island with my daughters I purchased a home in Surfside where it isconvenient, near family and the beaches and in a wonderful neighborhood.

What is your favorite beach on Island?Miacomet Beach

What is your Favorite Walk? The three-mile loop in Miacomet by the Golf Course, along the pond, ocean and back.

What is your Favorite Island Meal?Sushi by Yoshi. The food is fantastic and the service is enjoyable whether

you dine in or out.

What do you do on a day off?In the summer, the family and I kayak on Miacomet Pond from my parents home. The girls and their cousins like looking for the painted turtles and giant Koi.Followed by a trip to Miacomet Beach where my little sister Lisa Toney and I catchup while enjoying our children and the incredible beautiful setting.
