Swahili, the national lan-

guage of Tanzania and

Kenya, was not one of the

course requirements town shell-

fish biologist Tara Riley took to

get her marine biology degree

from Jacksonville University in

Florida, nor was it required for

her masters in aquaculture from

Auburn University.

A basic understanding, how-

ever, of this regional tongue

spoken by the people of the

eastern coasts of Central and

Southern Africa will help

Riley immensely during her

trip to the island of Zanzibar

from mid-December through

the middle of February.

On a leave of absence from

her job growing scallops, oys-

ters and quahogs for

Nantucket’s harbors, Riley,

whose Swahili is rapidly

improving, is joining a team of

marine biologists from the

Woods Hole Oceanographic

Institution, the Martha’s

Vineyard Shellfish Group and

the Island Creek Oysters

Foundation of Duxbury. She

will help several hundred

women on Zanzibar learn

shellfish hatchery and shellfish

grow-out techniques.

“Right now, the women go

collect wild seed and stock,

and they’re holding it in pens,

but they need a reliable seed

Riley, continued on page 11

Only on Nantucket could tents be his-

toric, and then, only at Sankaty Head

Golf Club.

Technically, the tents, which housed

caddy trainees at Camp Sankaty Head and

were replaced with permanent summer

living quarters decades ago, aren’t protected by the

Historic District Commission’s historic

preservation guidelines.

In the hearts and minds of the Sankaty

golfing community, however, the pyrami-

dal Army surplus tents are the equivalent

of the fishing shacks-cum-rose-covered

cottages in ’Sconset village to their owners and to

the HDC.

Nine years after Sankaty Head Golf Club was born,

a group of club members founded the caddy camp.

Instead of buildings, low wooden platforms were con-

structed. Around the 1940s, surplus Army tents - pyra-

mid-shaped and made of heavy canvas – were erected.

They were filled with cots for the camp, which had

been hatched to mold boys into responsible, self-

reliant young men and drill them into becoming top-

flight caddies.

The club, which formed after summer resident

David Gray’s gift of 275 acres in 1921, needed a sta-

ble of reliable, well trained caddies, wrote John C.

Lathrop in his article, “Camp Sankaty Head” in the

July 1989 issue of Historic Nantucket.

“One major problem remained to be solved,”

Lathrop wrote. “Two other courses on Nantucket were

about 30 years older than Sankaty, and they had cor-

nered the caddy market.

“At this point a somewhat mysterious Mrs. Gardner

entered the picture. A member of the Hyannisport Club

on the Upper Cape, she apparently came to Nantucket a

number of times between 1925 and the early thirties to

play the Sankaty Head Golf course. She noticed that

the caddy situation was not ideal and suggested that

someone at Sankaty talk to Donald M. Smith.”

Donald Smith of Worcester, Mass. — whom the

camp hired as its first director in 1930, the same as the

first caddy camp — was instrumental in building sev-

eral crude huts, at first using one tent.

source to increase their production.

That’s the goal of the hatchery,” said

Riley. “Right now they’re working out

the kinks of spawning so they can pro-

duce reliable seed and then sell it to the

women. And the women, when they buy

seed, once they get going, will be able

to fund the hatchery to keep it going.

“As far as I know, there are not any

shellfish hatcheries anywhere in East

Africa. So it’s kind of a big deal, and

it’s the model that Woods Hole hopes

to serve Africa once they work every-

thing out.”

This ongoing project which began in

2009, is funded by the Island Creek

Oyster Foundation and the McKnight

Foundation Africa Grants Program of

Chicago, Ill. It seeks to enable groups of

women — 15 to 25 from each of six vil-

lages — to build and run blood ark clam

and oyster hatcheries to collectively

harvest 23,000 to 46,000 pounds of

shellfish meat a year. This will enable

them to more than double their individ-

ual incomes of around $100 a year by

selling these shellfish to local markets

and high-end hotels.

Project coordinator Dr. Hauke Kite-

Powell, a research specialist in WHOI’s

Marine Policy Center, chose Riley for

this unique experience. He described

her as independent, passionate about

shellfish farming, and comfortable

working in a challenging culturally,

economically and socially divergent

place for an extended period of time.

Riley learned about Kite-Powell’s

efforts in November 2010, at a shellfish

restoration conference in Charleston,

S.C. There, she heard Rick Karney from

the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group

give a talk on how he (with Kite-

Powell) helped launch the Zanzibar

hatchery.

“I just thought it was such a cool

project. I emailed him and asked him if

they ever need any volunteers or any-

thing like that, I would definitely be

interested if the opportunity was right,”

said Riley.

Karney recognized Riley’s zeal and

said that working in the challenging

third world conditions at the Zanzibar

hatchery — which is plagued by the dif-

ficulties of securing supplies, unreliable

electricity and freshwater sources,

faulty water pumps and scarce refriger-

ation among other inadequate infra-

structure basics — will help provide

Riley with a greater appreciation of her

current position.

Riley will return in plenty of time to

get the town’s boathouse marine lab on

Brant Point ready for the 2012 shellfish

propagation. Aside from the personal

and career opportunity at hand, Riley

also noted the importance of providing

the town’s shellfish propagation pro-

gram greater exposure, especially with

key shellfish industry players such as

Karney, Island Creek Oysters and

WHOI watching, and the potential for

future collaborations in the offing.

“It’ll be nice to apply what I’ve

learned in that type of setting in Africa,

to Nantucket. Ironically, our projects are

very similar for what they’re doing. I’m

sure I’ll be comfortable in their setting,”

she said.

On what she admits to be a tight

budget, Riley produced, in addition to

quahogs and some oysters, 70 million

bay scallop larvae in the lab this past

year, releasing it in Nantucket and

Madaket harbors inside floating con-

tainment booms designed to keep the

larvae from being washed out of the

harbor, eaten, or killed by pollutants.

After two weeks floating free in the

water column, the infant scallops drop

down to the bottom and attach them-

selves to eelgrass blades.

Unfortunately, a storm on October 30

blew several hundred bushels of seed

— the result of her successful larvae

released at Fifth Bend — across the har-

bor into shallow water or up onto the

beach between Pocomo Point and

Wauwinet. Heartbreaking as it was to

have to dredge up these scallops and

rescue them from the beaches to get it

all safely back into deeper water, Riley

at least saw the potential for her style of

propagation.

“There’s lots of seed in the harbor.

That’s really good. The bushel count for

the season so far is pretty close to what

it was for the entire year last year, and

we’re only in the third week. So, it’s a

good sign,” said Riley. “I don’t know if

things are going to be completely amaz-

ing, but if each year they’re a little bit

better, and we can get to a number that’s

sustainable and a little more consistent,

then I’ll be happy with that.”

Despite late October’s seed strand-

ing, Riley remains optimistic about next

season. In 2012, she hopes to double

bay scallop production to 140 million.

To accomplish that, she plans to expand

the lab’s algae production. Algae is

essential food for shellfish, so the

amount of scallops, clams and oysters

Riley can propagate is limited only by

the amount food she can grow for them

in glass carboys on the second floor of

the boathouse.

Of equal importance on Riley’s agen-

da, and something she is really proud of,

is assisting fishermen in starting their own

shellfish aquaculture farms in the harbors

as a means of augmenting their income

and for improving water quality. She is

currently mentoring six fishermen.

“Some of these fishermen that are

having a hard time are looking for an

alternative thing they can do on the

water. I think that farming oysters, or

whatever type of shellfish they want to

try out, is really important, and it would

be great to have some local oyster prod-

ucts for the island.”

Prior to accepting the job on

Nantucket in 2009, Riley worked at a

commercial shellfish hatchery in

Virginia. Although the move meant a

cut in pay for Riley, the hatchery job

was driven mostly by profit, production

and meeting customers’ needs. So,

while she learned much about aquacul-

ture in Virginia, she finds her work here

on island exceedingly more rewarding.

“You get to a point in your life when

it becomes not about the money. You

have to love what you do ... I love my

job. I love going, and I don’t mind

working the hours I have to work to

make it happen.

“Nadhani ni njia nzuri ya kuishi

maisha yako. Ni tuliyopewa mimi fursa

nyingi kama hii, kwenda barani Afrika,

na mimi nina kushukuru sana kwa hilo,”

said Riley in Swahili. Translation: “I

think it’s a good way to live your life.

It’s afforded me a lot of opportunities

like this one, going to Africa, and I’m

very grateful for it.”

Smith, quickly dubbed “Smiddy”, situated Camp

Sankaty Head so it was surrounded by the 11th, 12th

and 13th holes. He converted a club maintenance

building into the camp’s kitchen and mess hall and

then procured flooring for a main building from the

greens keepers’ winter sand trap protectors, Lathrop

wrote.

John Lathrop Jr. is president of the Sankaty

Foundation, the autonomous organization – started in

1961 with $5,000 from the club and now endowed at

more than half a million – that funds and runs the

camp separate from the club. He said the tents, num-

bering at least four with room for eight campers each,

were used until just after the end of World War II.

The tent camp model probably would have lasted

longer, but at the end of the war, leftover supplies of

all kinds came flooding back into the States, including

items that Camp Sankaty Head could put to good use.

“After the war, there were Quonset huts, and I still

remember the Quonset huts, and they were up at least

through the 1960s,” Lathrop Jr. said. “They were sur-

plus, and they wanted to get people out of the tents.”

The corrugated, galvanized steel huts were cres-

cent-shaped, usually 20 feet by 48 feet, and fitted with

plywood walls at each end. They were low mainte-

nance and could be placed on the ground, concrete or

wood flooring. Being highly transportable, the huts in

wartime had uses ranging for troop barracks during

basic training to latrines, administrative quarters, mess

halls and storage. Camp Sankaty Head needed these

recycled, mobile buildings for the simple requirements

of the caddy camp.

Caddy campers slept in three Quonset huts until

1995, when the Camp Sankaty Head built three, one-

story bunkhouses.

“We also have a fairly large administrative and

housing unit and we have another building for staff.

We have a library, a rec hall and other ancillary build-

ings,” Lathrop Jr. said.

Construction is scheduled this winter at the camp to

repair damages from an August fire involving a Yates

Gas propane delivery tanker truck that was refilling

the camp's mess hall tank. The fire torched the mess

hall, kitchen and hut three and caused an estimated

$300,000 in damages. In November, the camp

received unanimous approval from the HDC for its

plans to rebuild the buildings lost to the blaze. Lathrop

Jr. said in November that it shouldn’t be long before

construction begins.

“In a way, we’ve already broken ground in that the

foundations have been excavated from the previous

foundations,” he said. “What we don’t have yet is per-

mission from the building department. We don’t

expect any difficulty with that. The buildings them-

selves will be slightly improved from their previous

conditions. Nothing major.”

Lathrop Jr. said the camp, one of the few remaining

caddy camps in the U.S., wants the new mess hall,

kitchen and hut three completed by the time the 2012

caddy camp opens in mid-June. Actually, it’s impera-

tive: The fire meant the 24 displaced caddies had to

bunk with the other 40 or so campers in huts one and

two, a living situation the camp does not want to con-

tinue next season.

“We want it done in May, but we’ll settle for the early

part of June,” Lathrop Jr. said. “We don’t want to go

through what we went through last year with bunking

people together. … We don’t want to do that again.”
