soft-spoken therapist genuinely likes making peo-

ple feel comfortable and uplifted, something she

accomplished on a grand scale when she founded

Nantucket’s Christmas Stroll in 1974.

Inviting a visitor into the cozy home that Kronenberg

shares with kitty, Lilac, she recounted the story of how

Stroll began. Prior to moving permanently to the island,

Kronenberg lived in Westport, Connecticut, where she

had a toy store with her husband. One year in Westport, a

group of shopkeepers decided to form a Christmas walk

and serve beverages that shoppers could take with them to

enjoy with roasted chestnuts sold at a corner in town.

Look Out Below

By nature, I am not somebody who revels in the idea of rolling around underneath

houses, pushing my way through dirt and cobwebs in the relatively stale air of the

average crawl space. It’s dark under there, not to mention kind of spooky, and you never

know what exactly is going to be down there to greet you upon your entrance.

It’s not that I’m claustrophobic — at least I don’t think I am. I don’t get all weirded out

by closed-in spaces. Rather, it’s that whole element of the unknown that kind of gets to

me. I’m told that there are no poisonous snakes on Nantucket, but I’m pretty sure that the

first one is going to be discovered by me when I’m rooting around under a house. Perhaps

it’s an entirely unfounded fear, but I’m just sayin’.

So it was with a wild range of mixed emotions that I opened the crawl space to the

house last weekend. It was my birthday, and the time between forgetting my wallet and

being served with a subpoena — Happy birthday, Andrew! We need you to be a witness

in court in two weeks! –— I decided to fill the time by helping my friend Fred Clarke

install the dishwasher I’d purchased as a birthday gift to myself. The new dishwasher was

to be delivered on Tuesday, assuming we could get the old one out on time.

Removing a dishwasher is easy enough, right? You just undo a couple of screws and

yank it out. Not so fast, my friend. First things first. You have to turn off the water before

you start pulling anything out, and that means somebody is going into the crawl space. So

now we’re caught up and can return to the action. I’m peering nervously into the dark,

waiting for something out of a Samuel L. Jackson movie to come slithering out at me.

When nothing did, I ventured in. As I slid myself towards the water shut-off valve, it

dawned on me that there are a lot of pipes and what-not down there that I had no idea were

there. I managed to get to the dishwasher shut-off and cranked it down. Fred yelled down

that he was going to drain the dishwasher now. As soon as he started, I noticed a pretty

steady trickle of water coming out of a pipe above my head. I’m no expert in the world

of plumbing, but I know enough to know that a leaking pipe under the house is a recipe

for disaster.

So I yelled up to Fred that we had ourselves a situation that was beyond my level of

expertise. What that meant — given that it was a Sunday — was that we’d have to wait

until Monday to get a plumber down there to fix the leak before we could go any further.

Luckily enough, Fred had his guy there the next day to fix the leak, and the friendly folks

from Kam Appliances had the dishwasher installed on Tuesday as promised.

And while the story ended happily, it did highlight a very important tidbit in the world

of home ownership that, at least in my experience, is too often overlooked, and that is the

need to check below your house on a regular basis for things like leaking pipes.

Funny story for you. Well, not really funny because it happened to me, but perhaps

from your perspective it’s kind of funny. When I lived in Texas, I owned a house I’d

bought from a guy who considered himself something of a do-it-yourselfer. Problems got

handled by him, because he figured he was as qualified as any plumber or electrician. And

for the most part, he did a good job. But there was one day I remember all too well. I had

a guest bathroom that I rarely used. But for about three weeks one fall, I had houseguests

who were using the shower in that bathroom. One day while someone was showering, I

heard the unmistakable noise of cascading water. And not cascading water in a shower.

I quickly opened the crawl space — there was an opening in a closet — and listened

as water literally gushed out of a broken pipe that hadn’t been fixed quite so well by Mr.

Fix-it. And the only reason I heard it was because I just happened to be in the right place

at the right time. What it boiled down to, though, was that a pipe was broken under the

house, and every time somebody used that shower, water poured into the crawl space. Not

a good thing, just in case you’re wondering.

So don’t ignore the crawl space. Have your pipes checked by someone who knows

what they’re doing (meaning someone other than yours truly). And have them checked

often. Just chalk it up to that pesky maintenance work you have to do. It’s not a lengthy

process to check the pipes, nor is it too exorbitantly expensive, especially when compared

to the nightmare that can result from ignoring the problems.

Westport eventually stopped its holiday walk. But

when Kronenberg moved to Nantucket, a friend and

store owner, the late Helen Burke, lamented about

how poor local shopping had become with the open-

ing of The Cape Cod Mall. Remembering how well-

liked the Westport event had been, she decided to see

if the concept would work on Nantucket as a way to

boost sales.

She approached David Worth, who was then the

President of the Chamber of Commerce — he loved

the idea. He and the chamber staff chose the first

Friday night in December of 1974 to turn all Main

Street’s Christmas tree lights on in unison to create a

warm, old-fashioned welcome for residents and chil-

dren. In the meantime, Kronenberg made the rounds

of merchants to tell them of the plans, including hav-

ing a talking tree and Santa on hand for the little

ones. Much to her surprise, they initially opposed the

idea, in part because Kronenberg was a recent, rela-

tively unknown wash ashore.

“They didn’t want anything to do with it. After all,

I wasn’t a Nantucketer,” she said. “It was like, forget

it. But of course, we went ahead with it, and after it

was over everybody was really pleased right away. It

was intimate. That was the beginning.”

Kronenberg still occasionally attends Christmas

Stroll, an event that has blossomed into not just a

Nantucket holiday tradition, but a welcome econom-

ic burst for island merchants, restaurants and inns.

“It certainly brought business to the island,” she

said.

Before moving to Nantucket, Kronenberg was an

advanced psychiatric practitioner and has worked in

places such as Bosnia, Romania and Washington, D.C.

She commuted for 10 years to work with a Brockton

medical group. Just over two years ago, she opened a

home-based private practice as a diagnostic therapist

licensed to prescribe medication treatments.

Kronenberg has two daughters: Heidi, a social

worker in Chicago with two children; and Claudia, a

professional photographer on Nantucket with three

children. While she enjoys spending time with her

grandkids, Kronenberg keeps busy with her practice,

is a member of the Interfaith Council, the Summer

Street Church Mission Committee and the Nantucket

Suicide Prevention Coalition. She is currently

involved in starting a spiritual support group for

Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

Though the island has changed since Kronenberg

moved here 35 years ago, she still loves Nantucket

for its peacefulness and small town feeling.

“You can go out for half an hour and do all of your

errands for the week. Where else in the world could

you do that?”

They say that hindsight is 20-20,

and in hindsight, I should have

known better.

I should have known better than to

try and interview one of the single

most recognizable and friendliest

faces on the island while sitting on

Main Street on a Sunday afternoon. If

there is a more recognizable face than

the one attached to Bruce Watts, I’m

unaware of it. And he’s got the per-

sonality to match the face, which

means that he not only knows every-

body, he loves to greet everybody and

have a conversation with them. After

all, you pretty much have to be larger

than life to be the subject of a

Nantucket Nectars cap.

Bruce is himself a third-generation

Nantucket native. After graduating

from high school, he reported for duty

at the Nantucket fire station. The only

catch was that he was a year short of

his 18th birthday, which meant he

couldn’t officially serve on the force.

But then-teenage Bruce was not to be

deterred, and he worked as an unpaid

volunteer, learning all there was to

know about the profession.

The next 40 years were all about

firefighting, with Watts serving his

final 27 years as fire chief. “It was a

great way to make a living,” he said of

his time on the force. “You gave back

to the community.”

And even by spending just a few

minutes with Bruce, you get the

impression that service to the commu-

nity is part of his inner core. It’s one

of the components that make Chief

Watts tick. In addition to his time with

the fire department, Bruce has also

served a term as a selectman and,

together with his wife Wendy, is don-

ning the red suit this year to play

Santa Claus for Christmas Stroll.

And then there’s the waving thing.

According to the aforementioned Nantucket

Nectars cap, “Nantucket’s fire chief, Bruce Watts,

waves to a thousand people a day.” I’m not sure as to

the accounting accuracy there, but it’s entirely possi-

ble that Chief Watts does, in fact, wave to at least

that many people in an average day driving his cab.

“I’ve been driving since 2002,” Chief says in his

accent that can only be called a Nantucket drawl, his

crystal-blue eyes boring straight ahead.

According to Wendy, waving is just something

he’s always done. “You did it when you were fire

chief,” she reminded him. “And he does it off-island,

too, which gets a little uncomfortable,” she admitted

with a laugh. Those of us who know Bruce expect

the wave and return it. And there are those people,

too, who consider getting a wave from Chief to be as

much a part of their Nantucket visit as Portuguese

bread and cobblestones. “One woman, she told me,

‘I always feel good because you wave to me. It

makes me feel wanted,’” Bruce said.

Backtracking briefly and setting the flux capacitor

for 1985, we see a woman named Wendy coming to

Nantucket for a vacation. Her parents have just

retired to the island, and she’s venturing out to check

on them and to enjoy the island. To date, that vaca-

tion has lasted slightly north of 25 years, 22 of which

have been spent married to Chief Watts.

“She was workin’ for the town,” Bruce remem-

bered, “when I was the fire chief.”

“And the rest is history,” Wendy added with a

smile. They both agreed that the statute of limita-

tions had probably expired on any conflict of inter-

est issues that might have arisen from their

courtship.

Today, while Bruce is behind the wheel of Chief’s

Cab, Wendy is working for National Grid. Outside of

work, they’ve got, as Wendy counted them off, ‘Two

boys, two grandsons and two granddogs.”

And with the talk of kids and grandkids, and

given that this is a real estate-themed publication, the

discussion turned to how the real estate market on

Nantucket has changed over the last several years

and what that means to young families — in the case

of Bruce’s children, young families that include

fourth generation natives.

“The whole real estate market got out of hand,”

Bruce said. “You had people who had bought hous-

es for $10,000 who were selling them for $500,000.

But the market would bear it, so who’s to say they

were wrong?”

Bruce recalled the first house he bought — he

paid the princely sum of $10,500 in 1961 — and

remembered that the seller had felt so guilty for ask-

ing such a high price that she left the house entirely

furnished for him. “But everything is relevant,”

Bruce was quick to add. “That was a lot of money

for me back then.” He recalled going to the bank to

get the loan for that first house, and the bank presi-

dent himself knew everything about Bruce already.

“He made sure you were going to be able to pay that

loan back, I promise you that,” Bruce said.

Bruce and Wendy acknowledged how difficult it

can be for many young families to afford to buy

property on Nantucket. “I wish they’d created some

kind of land bank for the local kids to be able to buy

from, but nobody had a crystal ball back then. Nobody

knew what was going to happen to the real estate

market.”

Just then he saw some visitors that he recognized

from his cab. Five minutes later, he returned to the

conversation at hand.

“You know what they say. Hindsight is 20-20.”

Yeah, I’m starting to see the truth in that myself.
