Did You Know? A CHRISTMAS CRECHE STORYBy Bill Pinella

If you are like the vast majority of Catholics sca eredaround the United States you probably share a similar vi-sion of the na vity scene. You know, Mary and Josephgathered around a manger in Bethlehem, animals trying toget a good nights sleep and then Jesus was born, the heav-ens rejoiced and, well, you know the rest of the story. Buta year later was the event commemorated? Did the CityCouncil members in Bethlehem declare it a holiday? Werethere fes vals and celebra ons? No.

In fact, and this is what you can experience on Dec. 24 atthe Mission San Luis Rey Parish prior to the ChildrensChristmas Eve Mass, it wasnt un l much, much later thatour dear old friend Francis of Assisi changed things and thevision of that ini al Christmas was altered forever.

St. Francis was in Grecio, Italy, and feeling the wonder ofthe birth of Christ, he decided a reenactment was in orderfor the faithful. Show them what it was like that night. He

couldnt go down to the local Grecio WalMart and pur-chase some plas c gurines for his front lawn. There wasno CD with Gregorian Chants for him to play over a loud-speaker in the town square. No parade with giant balloonswas coming down Main Street. So, what was he to do toget the message across that Christ had come into the worldon this day? What exactly was the rst Christmas Creche (arepresenta on of Mary, Joseph and others around the cribin Bethlehem) like?

Let Father Adrian Peelo explain: The Crib (or crche) aswe know it today was begun by St. Francis at the village ofGrecio in the Rie Valley, about 40 miles outside of

Rome. It was Christmas and Francis wanted to give peo-ple an experience of what the very rst Christmas was like.He was given the use of a cave from a local farmer and withlive animals, a couple represen ng Mary and Joseph and areal baby, he and his fellow Friars gathered the local peopleand they celebrated the Na vity with a live Crib. Peoplewere moved to tears by the experience and St. Francis bi-ographer, Thomas of Celano, said, it was as if Christ hadbeen born again in the hearts of the faithful.

And so, what all started, oh, 790 years ago as in justabout eight centuries, will return and soon. Less than twomonths from now, coming to a church near you (Mission

San Luis Rey Parish) will be the recreaon of that long-agoevent produced, directed and mainly inspired by St. Fran-cis. A cast of about a dozen of Parish Youth Director Ma Franklins troops will stage a recrea on of the original playabout 30 minutes prior to the Childrens Mass on ChristmasEve. Franklins group will take charge of a program per-formed the past couple of years by sixth-through-eighthgraders taught by Susan McGuirk at the Old Mission Mon-tessori School.

In the past, the Friars supplied us with robes for thekids, McGuirk said. The ou its may not t perfectly andthere wont be a cow led into the Center, but its the con-cept that ma ers.

We hope that people will get some idea of the simplicityof the birth of Christ and that they will be moved by thehumble beauty of the Bethlehem Crib, Father Adriansaid. No doubt, St. Francis will give this produc on twothumbs up.
