FROM THE PASTOR…

Peace and all good! As you all know we are halfway through lent. I hope you've had me to par cipate in some of the Lenten ac vi es offered by the Parish and the Old Mission. Coming up are our Bilingual Communal Reconcilia-

on services on Thursday April 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in Serra Cen-ter and on Saturday April 12, 10 a.m. in Serra Center. Both services will have close to twenty priests available for individ-ual confession in English and Spanish. I would like to encour-age everyone to u lize this opportunity to experience the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. There's also the Sta ons of the Cross on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. in English and 7 p.m. in Spanish, as well as the mul cultural Sta ons of the Cross on Friday, April 11th at 6 p.m. on the Mission grounds. The "Glory of the Gospel" retreat for the English-speaking community by Abbot Damien Toilolo, OSB of St. Andrew's Abbey, was well received. The Samoan Community gracious-ly offered hospitality for three nights by serving delicious soup and bread the first two nights. On the last night, Abbot Damien and all a endees enjoyed a feast of roasted pork and all the sides. Many thanks to our Samoan Community for their generous gi to Mission San Luis Rey Parish. The His-panic community will be enjoying a similar retreat on March 24, 25 and 26 by Vicente Leal. Perhaps more important than all the ac vi es and things we give up at Lent is the me we take to look inward and ask God for his healing grace and conversion to a greater faith. St. Francis was fond of reminding his brothers that all good things come from God. The only thing en rely our own is our sins. From my personal experience, we're not really bad people, but some mes we can be lazy, inconsider-ate or indifferent to what God wants for us. It's easy to keep focused on our needs, feelings and thoughts, but our bap s-mal commitment means we are living for others, thinking of their welfare and needs. Hopefully as we grow in our love of God we see more o en the face of Christ in those we meet. Let us never really forget that it is God's grace work-ing in us that allows us to change. Lent truly is a celebra on of God's mercy and love for all. With best wishes for a blessed Lent for you and your fami-ly.

Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

PARISH OPERATIONS NEWS

1) By the me you're reading this, Serra Center will be in the process of being painted white as in the original plan to match the Old Mission. Through a generous dona on, Art Cedillo’s pain ng company, Art’s Coa ngs, offered to paint the Serra Center for free. The process will take about two weeks and 150 gallons of paint. Three genera ons of Ce-dillo family members, all long me parishioners, are work-ing on the project. Our thanks and prayers go out to this generous family who saw a need at the parish and stepped in to fill that need. Some me in the future, the rest of the complex will be painted white as well.

2) With great joy, finally we have an official, approved kitch-en in the St. Francis Hall. Everything inside has totally been redone and is up to code and standards with an "A" ra ng from the kitchen inspectors. It took a lot of me and effort. Thank you to all who have given so generously to the Parish Building Fund. It's your dona ons that have made this renova on possible. I'd like to invite everyone to come to the St. Francis Hall for free coffee and donuts on Sunday, March 30th a er the 8am, 10am and 12 noon masses. Walkthroughs of the kitchen and renovated Women's Bathroom will be ongoing that day.

3) Please be aware that the renova on of the parking lot behind Serra Center is s ll in the works. With cost being the main problem facing us, please know that we are working on the best way to move forward with this pro-ject. More informa on will be coming soon. It has not been forgo en!

4) A er Tri City Hockey moved away, the hockey courts were renovated to provide a safe place to play for students and youth. We are now using the courts for volley-ball. Pain ng begins today to prepare the courts for soc-cer and basketball as well as volleyball. Ligh ng and addi-

onal improvements need to be done. Once again, fund-ing is the issue. Please watch this space for updates and more informa on.

Peace, Kathleen Flanagan Chief Opera ng Officer Old Mission and Parish

FR. ADRIAN’S CORNER I have to be brief this weekend but I wanted to say that we had a wonderful me at the L.A. Congress. Many Hispanic and English-speaking Catechists came with Fr. Luis, Fr. Arturo and me. I think we learned a lot and came home refreshed and encouraged in our faith. There were 50,000 Catholics at Ana-heim over the weekend, over 300 speakers and dozens of litur-gies and opportuni es for prayer. Thank you to Fr. Luis and his team for making our trip possible. St. Patrick’s Day celebra ons were again beau ful this year. Thank you to Lupe and his choir for the singing at Mass and to Jim and Diane Manning and their many helpers for the deli-cious potluck dinner and for decora ng the retreat Dining Room at the Mission – shamrocks, leprechauns and green flow-ers were in abundance! A highlight was Lupe Rios singing ‘Oh Danny Boy’ during dinner, accompanied by Kate on the harp and Jenny on the fiddle – and not a bad rendering either…for a Mexican! Let us con nue to pray for those on the Malaysian aircra s ll missing, and for their families. Wishing you a blessed week. Fr. Adrian.

PRAISE GOD FOR OUR VERY FIRST GATHERING TOGETHER!

It was SUCH a blessing to share fellowship, break bread, and celebrate the Mass as a young adult community! Our brothers and sisters ranging from ages 19-26 all had something to share and connect with the community. Father David celebrated Mass with us, and we were the Eucharis c ministers, lectors, and sing-ers. It was the MOST authen c experience of Acts 2:42 I have ever had. And did I hear someone rocking the piano a erwards!? While we ended at 8:30, MANY stayed for another hour just to meet new friends and sing together. Come experience what we shared as we meet again March 20th at 7pm at Peyri Rm. in the Retreat Center.

REFLECTION: In a few days, March 25th, we will commemorate the Annuncia on of the Lord, sadly a holy day generally ig-nored of its importance. It has always been our belief that the sacredness of life begins at the moment of concep on. We have recently experienced the joys of Christmas, the celebra on of our Savior's birth. Our hearts rejoiced as we relived the stories of Bethlehem, shepherds, the star, the Magi, etc. all the while ignor-ing the real miracle that took place nine months earlier -- the an-nouncement to a young Jewish maiden named Mary. If we, on one hand, believe that life begins at concep on, surely mankind's life began anew with Mary's fiat..."Be it done to me..." These word echoed some thirty years later by Our Lord..."Not my will but Thine…." Was not Mary's "yes", mankind's First Holy Communion? Is it a coincidence that the angel's visit to Mary is celebrated about midway between Christmas and Holy week? God's redemp ve plan did not begin with Judas' kiss but with the angel's visit with Our Blessed Mother. —Anonymous

Paz,

Kathleen Flanagan- Directora de Operaciones Misión An gua y Parroquia
