    IN TODAYS GOSPELMk. 7:14-15

He summoned the crowd again and said to them,"Hear me, all of you, and understand.

    Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;

but the things that come out from within are what defile.

St. Francis heard the Lord speak to him, saying: Go and rebuild my Church.

    FR. ADRIANS CORNER

Congratulations to all who made the celebration of SanLuis Rey such a wonderful success! We have a perfectweather and a great participation by the parish in this verypopular event. Again, the fireworks were stunning and thefood and entertainment first class. Special thanks to Fr.Luis and his hardworking committee for making it an eve-ning to remember.

We had a workshop for the Bereavement Ministry lastSaturday morning and almost everyone was in attendance. This is perhaps the most challenging ministry in the parish

it calls for delicacy, tact, empathy and the ability to listendeeply to people who have lost a loved one. BereavementMinisters greet the relatives of someone who has passedaway and help organize the Funeral Liturgy. They comfortthe bereaved, help the Liturgy to run smoothly and assistthe presider at the altar during the Mass. We are trulyblessed in this parish to have people of the caliber of BettyMuszynski, Lou & Amy Herrera, Maria Gentile, Ann

Hibbard, Aurora Mangohig, Marie Abernethy, Rose Guer-

rero, Terry Borja, Mike & Marilyn Pollack, Vern Capistran,

Marge Collins, Genny Rubio, Pat Davis, Angel Wysingle,

Manuel & Lorraine Ybarra. They deserve our gratitude forall the work they do, for being a compassionate presenceto those grieving the loss of loved ones, and for helping uspriests make the Funeral Liturgy uplifting and hope filled.

Our workshop for Ministers of the Eucharist (Hispanic)will take place on Saturday 22 September from 9:00 a.m.until 12:00 noon at the Parish Building Rm. #5 (acrossRm.#1). Ministers will receive their certificates from thePastor. Please remember that you are required to have acertificate in order to do this ministry. This is a require-ment of the Diocese of San Diego. But more importantly, itis an opportunity to be together and to update ourselvesand welcome new ministers to the fold.

By the time you read this we will have a Youth MinistryCoordinator at the parish. It is a part time position for themoment until we can find the money to make it full time. The main areas of work for this person will be Confirma-tion Preparation, working with the R.E. Department,PostConfirmation Program for Youth,Young Adult Group andto liaise with and support Young Parent Ministry at theParish.

Finally, we look forward very much to the return of ourstudents at Old Mission Montessori School. Its been soquiet around here without you. Welcome back all ourteachers, assistants and volunteers too! Not forgettingMoms and Dads, Grandparents and friends who make theschool the happy and lively place it is.

I will be in Ireland to visit my family from September 12until October 2.Warmest wishes and blessings!~~Fr. Adrian.

    LAS MADRINAS ALTAR SOCIETY

SPACE FOR SPORTS FOR OUR YOUTH

The number of youths in our parish continues togrow, but with the sale of the Bishops property acrossthe street, the space we have for them to play sports onis shrinking! We simply dont have enough safe spacefor our children to play on. Three developments willhelp remedy this situation. First, the Mission will allow

us to use the space behind the Mission retreat house asa soccer field. Second, we will have access to the Mis-sion pool. Third, we have contacted our long-timefriends at Tri-City Hockey to let them know that weneed back the land that weve been allowing them touse as a hockey rink. We know this is a great inconven-ience to them and appreciate the gracious way theyhave accepted the news. We wish them a great futureand are working with them to make their move aspainless as possible. We believe these three steps willgo a long way toward meeting the needs of our youthfor safe areas on which to play sports.

ELEMENTARY, JR. HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL NEEDSCATECHISTS/TEACHERS

Our Parish is so fortunate to have such a dedicated and well-trained staff, working so diligently through the summer toplan and coordinate the calendar for the upcoming religiouseducation school year. Bill, Larry and Elena have gathered and

trained a wonderful group of caring and creative catechists toshare their Christian faith and love of Catholic traditions withour young people. What does it take to be a part of this group? Someone who

lives and practices our faith, participates in Mass and has adesire to share their faith with our children and teens. Weare in need of catechists/teachers for Elementary and Jr.High/High School; classes are on Sundays and Tuesdays re-spectively with some on Saturday for the High School pro-gram. Training, resources, etc., are provided.Last year, our programs combined had a total of 800 stu-

dents. In the high school program, many of our teachers havemoved on for this year and are unable to volunteer; we need

8 men and/or women who are willing to share and teach thefaith, engage in discussion and faith experiences with ouryoung people, to serve as teachers and aides. If you are able to help, come and speak with Bill, Larry or

Elena and they will provide you with the tools and trainingnecessary to enrich your involvement with the children andthe youth of our Parish. As Jesus called St. Francis, we are allcalled to build His church, and the best way to strengthenyour faith and increase the love in your heart is to share itwith the younger church, as they are the future of our faith. If you are interested in helping with First Grade thru Eight

Grade please stop by the Religious Ed. Office, call 760-547-0712 or email [email protected]; for High School, see or contact Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702 /[email protected]

RCIAINQUIRY: Have you ever had questions about theCatholic Church? How do you become a member of theCatholic Church? For those not baptized, baptized in an-other Christian church, or baptized Catholic but inactive inthe church, please call 760-547-0702.

ASSIST WITH A BIBLE: At the Easter Vigil our parishcommunity witnessed forty five people receiving the sacra-ments necessary to complete their full entrance into theChurch. One of the key elements of their catechesis is thecoming to know the Scriptures, the Word of God, on aweekly basis. In class during the week and again when theygather on Sunday, they come to build a relationship withJesus Christ that they will carry with them for all their lives.

For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candi-dates are given a Bible at the Rite of Acceptance ceremonymarking the beginning of their journey of faith. Our parishfaith formation budget is stretched this year trying to covermany, many, needs. Your help to provide Bibles to our RICAgroups (both English & Spanish) will be greatly appreciated.A donation of $20.00, or of any amount, would help us inpurchasing a Bible for each RCIA catechumen or candidateentering the Church next Easter. If you wish to give, youmay make a donation at the Parish Office, in Bill Bischoffsoffice, or drop it into the collection in an envelope markedBIBLES. If you have any questions call Bill Bischoff at 760-

547-0702.Many of the people coming into the Church have manyquestions about the place of the Blessed Mother in the lifeof the Church. In their time spent in RCIA many times astrong devotion to Mary comes about for the new Catholic. Therefore a need for an adult rosary to be given to themis also a part in the RCIA process. A donation of $10.00would help in acquiring rosaries for these individuals. Thesame manner for giving is as written above. Any questionsplease call Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702.

    SECURITY NOTICE

Its a sad commentary on the times but security mustbe in the forefront of our mind. We are fortunate that wehave never had any problems or incidents in the parish orat the school but even so for the protection of our chil-dren, staff and parishioners we feel it is time to improve

our security. We want to remain a friendly and invitingparish but you will notice a few changes. When you visit the parish office you will be asked to

sign in, wear a visitors sticker and wait for the personyoure visiting to come and greet you.

Only the Parish door and the school door will be openduring the day.

When the Parish closes at 4pm all doors will be locked At 6pm, when security arrives, the side door, facing

the Serra Center, will be open for evening activities. All staff and volunteers will wear name badges so you

can identify them. Soon our maintenance and securitystaff will be in uniform so that they can be identifiedas well.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperationin adhering to these new security policies. We know eve-ryone cares deeply about the safety of our staff, children, parishioners and visitors.

nethy, Rose Guerrero, Terry Borja, Mike & Marilyn Pollack,

Vern Capistran, Marge Collins, Genny Rubio, Pat Davis, AngelWysingle, Manuel & Lorraine Ybarra.
