    Just ThinkingBy: May Jones

Today I was thinking about sadness, and began to feel a bitsorry for her. She is not welcome at celebrations, holidays, vacations or workplaces. It’s considered unbecoming toparade her around in the form of a frown, or to use her whenresponding to the question “how are you?” There are ernestattempts to chase her away, fix her, cure her, deny her, orovercome her in statements like, “keep your chin up” or“ smile.”  Sadness lives comfortably though, in award winning booksand movies, beautiful songs, epic poems, and unforgettablepaintings. When sadness is allowed to mature and ripen, creativity can manifest itself in many unique ways. As FrancoisRene’ De Chateaubriand wrote, “The most disastrous timeshave produced the greatest minds. The purist metal comesof the most ardent furnace, the most brilliant lightning comesof the darkest clouds.” Gordon Lightfoot —- master ofmelancholy —- clearly knew the needs of sad people whenhe wrote the words to this song:“Rainy day people always seem to know when its time to call Rainy day people don’t talk, they just listen, till they’ve heard it all

Rainy day lovers don’t lie when they tell you, they’ve been down like you

Rainy day people don’t mind if you crying a tear or two.” Rainy day people are not afraid of sadness… they are asrare as a blue diamond.  In Nature, rain is needed just as much as the sun, and tobe complete human beings, we need our rain too. Sincesadness leads to crying, and crying leads to tears, it is helpfulto know thatmany beneficial chemicals are found in emotional tears; such

as endorphins that are thought to reduce pain and improvemood. The Japanese, who consider hiding sadness a virtue, have come to realize that their stress levels are far too high, and have organized “rui—-katsu” (tear seeking) sessions, where they watch sad movies and read sad books to have agood old fashioned cry in public.  Crying is the one of first things we do when we are born, and we should no more hold it in than a newborn baby would.Babies know how to do crying right. Their lips quiver, theirmouths open wide, their forehead scrunches up, their facegets red, their arms flail about, and they kick their feet. Thegrown up version of human beings hold back sadness andtears, making it far more painful than experiencing them fully. Some mental health professionals claim it is downrightdangerous to your well being to hold back crying.  So you see, there is no need to be afraid of sadness. Shenever sticks around for too long, but moves in and out alifetime, trading places with happiness now and again. When

she pays you a visit, be sure to invite her best friends along—- well worn pajamas, soft tissues, good chocolate, and apint of ice cream.

A SALUTE TO LIBERTY, THE VICTORY AT BENNING-

TON RECALLED- The Battle of Bennington, fought on Au-

gust 16, 1777 in Walloomsac, New York, provided a long-needed

victory for American forces in the American Revolution. Hear

what the combatants and civilians had to say after the Battle. A

program consisting of various reflections on the events of that

Battle will be presented starting at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August

16, 2015 at the New York State Bennington Battlefield Historic

Site located on NYS Route 67, a few miles east of the intersec-

ion of NYS Routes 67 and 22 in North Hoosick. Much of the

original site of the Battle can be viewed from the area dedicated

n 1927. The site is about eight miles from the Bennington Battle

Monument in Bennington, Vermont. One can easily visit both

sites in one outing. Participating in the program will be members

of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Ameri-

can Revolution, Brigade of the American Revolution, 2nd Conti-

nental Regiment of Artillery, His Majesties 53rd Regiment of Foot,

he Hoosick Township Historical Society and other local individu-

MY THOUGHTS by John L JeffersonIn my first column for the Money Saver, I thought itwas important to address a few issues with a local se-lectman. Mr. Michael Keane, who is up for re-electionin 2017, has been displaying behavior over the past fewmonths that is extremely unbecoming of a public offi-cial. Mr. Keane states on his Linked In page that headds “value through civic involvement” in his newly“adopted community.” One would think that a man look-ing to add value to his new community would be recep-tive to the voters and refrain from insulting his con-stituents with names like “ankle biters” and “naysayers.”Anyone who is interested in the economic development

of town, and region, should probably abstain from de-basing the local businesses with words like “imitator.”This much is clear, Michael Keane not only blurs theline between public interest and self-interest, he failsto understand what it means to be a Vermonter, aBenningtonian, and a public official. Is this man repre-sentative of Bennington and its people? Is this the best“leader” we can find for the various committees andcouncils that are so important to Bennington’s future?I think not.John L. ON THE FARMby Andy Manne

This week’s ag report issponsored by:

DON’T KISS YOUR CHICKENS! That’s the message fromthe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is blam-ing a salmonella outbreak on backyard chicken owners beingoverly affectionate with their flocks. Seems like common sense, right? The CDC says more than 180 people have come down withsalmonella across the U.S. this year from contact with back-yard poultry. Thirty-three of them became so sick they required

hospitalization.“We do not recommend snuggling or kissing the birds or touch-ing them to your mouth,” says Megin Nichols, a veterinarianwith the CDC, “because that is certainly one way people be-come infected with salmonella.”Over the past 10 years there’s been a boom in backyard poul-try in the U.S. And while the CDC may view chickens as po-tential vectors of disease, a growing clutch of chicken ownersviews them as family pets. Some people reason: “If they’re used to humans holding themthen you can walk in [to the coop] without worrying about arethey going to jump or get scared,” she says. “You want to beable to come into the pen to feed them and water them withoutthem starting to fly all around and go crazy.”One owner says the birds are a surprisingly calming presence.Sometimes if she needs a little “de-stress” time, she’ll bring astool into the coop and sit with the hens. “They come. Somewill jump up in my lap. They make this peaceful farm noise. What’s better when you’re in the middle of a workday than tohear that?”The CDC is arguing against this type of casual human/chicken

fraternizing.“While poultry do appear clean they do carry bacteria,” saysCDC vet Nichols. She also warns that backyard chicken owners should make suretheir birds stay in the backyard and do not come into the house.“We encourage that people live in their environments indoorsand poultry stay outdoors,” Nichols says. She adds that if peopledo handle their chickens, they should make sure to wash theirhands (and apparantly their lips) afterward.
