HISTORIC ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH TO REOPEN Poultney, Ver-

mont. Historic St. John’s Episcopal Church will reopen in June as a summer chapel

with weekly worship services every Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Service of Evening Prayer

will be led by local Episcopal clergy and the rich notes of the original 1840’s William

Nutting hand-pump organ will accompany hymns at many services. At other times

music will be by violin, flute, guitar and folk harps. Light refreshments will be avail-

able after worship in the garden, weather permitting.

The Welsh service in honor of this region’s rich Welsh heritage officiated by The

Reverend Christopher David will be July 25th.

The detailed summer schedule will be announced. Volunteers to assist with weekly

needs including organ pumping and refreshments will be appreciated. Please contact

da Mae Johnson at (802)-287-9744 for more information.

These services are a rare opportunity offered to worshippers, historians, musicians

and lovers of early Vermont. For months, a group of residents have been planning for

he reopening of very special St. John's Church on Route 140 in East Poultney for

ummer Saturday services. Untouched and unchanged St. John’s is one of the two

hurches from the early 1800s surviving in this village. It is located across from the

village green, which is dominated by the stately United Baptist church.

St. John's is a fine example of classic New England Carpenter Gothic. It retains its

gated pews, kerosene lamps, stenciled walls and a rare, hand pump, organ made by

Vermonter, William Nutting, which dates from the 1840s. The cornerstone of St.

ohn's was laid May 27, 1831. The first services were held a year later, May 27,

    832. The first Episcopal Bishop of Vermont, the Rt. Rev. John Henry Hopkins,

presided at the consecration of the building. When the church was erected East Poultney

was booming. It boasted two large inns, mills along the Poultney River, a debatingociety and a library. Clarks, Hughes, Lewises, Thralls, Teetors, rest in the adjacent

St. John's Cemetery, families still in Poultney, or as many, who left only to return,

who are a testimony to continuity. The arrival of the railroad moved the center of town

activity west, and members of St. John's church then built another Episcopal church,

Trinity Church, in the new hub in the 1860s. St. John's held regular services until

    931. After that the old church opened only once a year for an annual service of

worship. The summer of 2014 brought the first reopening since 1931. Since the

losing and sale of Trinity Church, attention is focused on St. John's Church, not only

due to its quality as a historical treasure, but also as a place for continuing worship in

he Episcopal tradition. The building is also a resource which may be offered to the

    ommunity.

Members of the executive committee of the Church stress that the services are

open to all. They welcome all to join them as they usher in this second year in the 21st

entury in the life of this venerable, old house of worship.

Donations will be gratefully received. To send donation, kindly make check pay-able to “St. John’s Restoration Fund”, and mail it to: Treasurer, Randall Wareing, 527

    Granville Street, Poultney, VT 05764.

For further information, please call The Rev. William A. Davidson (518- 499- 1850),

Chair, or Ida Mae Johnson (802-287-9744) of St. John's Executive Committee.

    BENNINGTON CHAMBER EXECUTIVE

    DIRECTOR TO STEP DOWN:

It was with much regret that we learned of

this news about Joann Erenhouse stepping

down as the Executive Director of the

    Bennington Chamber of Commerce. Joann

has been the driving force behind so many of

the great things that have come out of

Bennington in the last 10+ years. Her dedica-

tion and determination to put and keep Bennington on the radar for tourist

and businesses has been second to none in our area.

Her down to earth demeanor and likeability made her a magnet for suc-

cess at her job. We want to wish her all the best and say a heartfelt Thank

You! for all she has done for us as a community. It will be a tough task tofill her shoes at the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce.

BINGO Every Monday, the Bennington Elks hosts bingo. There

will be a $1,000 jackpot and 31 games for $13. Doors open at

5:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7 p.m. The Bennington Elks is at

    125 Washington Ave.

THE BENNINGTON FREE CLINIC is held each Thursday

starting at 6 p.m. This clinic is for uninsured people 18 years

of age or older, who would otherwise fall through the cracks

of our fractured health care system. It is located in the First

Baptist Church at 601 Main St. Please call 802-447-3700 for

    an appointment to be seen.
