FUNDS NEEDED FOR ELECTRICAL UPGRADE @ The North River United Methodist Church, which is seeking donations for the “Let There Be Light” campaign to update the electrical systemin the 168 year old church building. The North River United Methodist Church was founded in1847 in the hamlet of North River and is the second oldest church located in the Town of Johnsburg.According to Amy Sabattis member of the church and current trustee “We have had some success inraising funds through car washes and bake sales and we have had a few generous donations but weare still lacking the funding to complete the project. The fund-raising committee is looking forgrants from foundations, too, but most private foundations say “no churches.” So, we have hitsocial media by using the site GoFundMe. The site will display our campaign but only when we hitthe $500.00 mark. When we hit that mark our campaign will be posted for the whole world to seeand the potential for donations is much greater.” If you would like to contribute to this fundraisergo to http://www.gofundme.com/lit3z4 or call Amy Sabattis at 518-251-2519.

Just ThinkingBy: May Jones In an effort to make sense of things, we humans sometimes drawconclusions based on preconceived notions of how we want to see theworld. The mind only knows it’s own point of view, which it considersthe truth. If a grieving person gets out of bed and manages to get through theday’s activities, we assume they are coping well. If a person sufferingfrom depression laughs at a joke, we assume they are doing just fine, and when we see a homeless person, we often make a lot ofassumptions about how they got into such a pickle. Things are not what they seem. To be whole and complete humanbeings, we need to be more curious - dig deeper than how thingsappear on the surface. You are about to read three stories of whathappens when we choose discovery over judgement, listening overtalking, engagement over dismissal, and empathy over apathy. Recently, I’ve witnessed the activities of incredibly giving people whohave peeled back the many layers of homelessness, and taken a closerlook. They’ve tackled it with love and compassion - not judgement andcriticism. If you want to see exactly what I mean, go to Olin’s Offerings,a grass roots program in Bennington that feeds the hungry – no questionsasked. You can find them on Facebook at OlinsOffering. In AlbanyN.Y., a local news channel declared AmyWalsh, “Saint Amy.” She created the Help the Homeless BackpackProject, and has distributed over 100 backpacks filled with everydayessentials to the homeless. You can find her on the streets where thehomeless are; hugging them and giving them backpacks. Her impacthas spread across many counties, two states - and yes, you can findher at Olin’s Offerings on occasion too. Another grass rootsorganization, founded by Salley Gibney, is the You Are Never AloneFoundation, where a caring blanket was created with these embroideredwords: I Matter, You Matter. Because of them, over 500 homelesspeople will have their very own blanket to keep them warm through thewinter months. These people, and countless more, have discovered that you can save the world… one person at a time. They see no division between you and me. We are one. They all had a great idea… and then you generously gave your time, money, or both. They allhad compassion. A powerful word, that when deeply experienced, helps us see beyond ourselves, enables us to embrace the sufferingminds and bodies of others, and then compels us to do something tohelp. When we abandon our assumptions, conditioning, and opinions, absolutely amazing things happen. Your comments are welcome at [email protected]
