It’s an unusually warm, colorful, and beautiful Columbus Day, but Hairy doesn’teem to notice. He’s sticking like glue to the limb of an autumn colored maple tree

n front of my deck. He’s not more than the length of my 5 year old granddaughteraway from me. Moving his head rapidly from side to side, he looks as if he’s tryingo get water out of his ears. He makes a deliberate “peek” sound, and moves

backward as effortlessly as forward: in both directions hopping happily. The pleasantcent of a wood burning stove just drifted past my nose, but he doesn’t seem to

notice that either. He’s moving his head up and down now, instead of side to side,

as he pecks incessantly at the suet hanging from the tree. There’s an assiduousdrum-like rhythm to his efforts. His tail is tucked in tightly to the bottom of the suetholder: necessary for balance I presume. There are three varieties of suet for

Hairy to choose from: berry, peanut, and sunflower. Today he seems to prefer theberry one.

When spooked by an unexpected sound, he flies to a branch farther away for

afety. Once the imagined danger has passed, he cautiously inspects the areabefore swiftly swooping back to the branch of tasty morsels. With bits of red oneither side of his head and black and white feathers, he looks simply dashing

against the crimson maple leaves. He looks equally as handsome against the snowhat clings to the same limb in winter.

Hairy is taking a well deserved break now, and appears to be sharpening his

HARRY ORLYK’S WORK WILL BE EXHIBITED ATMCCARTEE’S BARN in Salem, New York from through Oc-ober 31st. The exhibition of fifty paintings, curated by Everaue Clary, provides an in-depth look at the artist’s work from985-2015, which embodies the pure essence of landscape paint-ng, Orlyk’s paintings are rooted in the seasonal landscapes of

Washington County. They have echoes of the Hudson Riverchool, but filtered through the use of color and composition of

he Abstract Expressionists. They are strikingly beautiful. Thewinter paintings are composed of a pallet of umber, browns andggshell whites that capture the barren beauty of the land. Mar-

malade oranges and cobalt blues evoke the vividness of a hotummer afternoon. Orlyk’s work is ambitious. Because he pro-uces a painting a day his work transcends predictable landscapeainting. He calls it a “portrait of days”: an evolving visual jour-al of sunlight, land and his own emotional response to a sensef place. “The land is a friend of mine. I enjoy sitting down andstening to it.” His painting process is unconventional. Everyfternoon he gets in his van, carefully chooses his location, clampsis canvas to the steering wheel, and paints. He always asks per-

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING BREAST CANCER EARLYThe goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Screening

refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms.
