MKG Art Management Partners MKG Art Management’s consultants have earned advanced degrees in art history and arts administration and bring an academic perspective into the process of building art collections. Before joining MKG Art Management, our consultants have acquired varied experiences in the art world: in academia, museums, non-profit organizations, galleries, auction houses, and other consulting companies. MKG Art Management has the largest art advisory staff in the city of Houston. MKG’s depth of talent makes MKG Art Management well suited to handle the largest and most complex projects. In addition, MKG Art Management is uniquely equipped to provide clients with certified fine art appraisals with two members of the International Society of Appraisers www.isa-appraisers.org on staff. MKG Art Management’s scope is not limited by specialization in types of clientele – healthcare, institutional, hospitality, private or corporate clients. Instead, we bring our broad experience, innovative energy, and client-centric approach to each of our projects.

Melissa Kepke Grobmyer, M.A. Founding Partner, President After eleven years of academic and practical experience in the art world, Melissa Kepke Grobmyer founded MKG Art Management in 1998. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and her Master of Arts degrees at the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with high honors. Before becoming an art advisor, Mrs. Grobmyer worked with 9th through 18th century Decorative art at Sotheby's in New York. Later she worked with Contemporary art at Robert Miller Gallery and 19th century American art at Richard York Gallery, both in New York. After returning to Houston, Mrs. Grobmyer was Senior Associate at an art-advising firm for three and one half years, where she edited American Images: The SBC Collection of Twentieth-Century American Art, published by Abrams in 1996.

In 1998, Mrs. Grobmyer founded MKG Art Management. Through her career as an art advisor, Mrs. Grobmyer has assembled collections focused on topics such as American Impressionism, American photography, Contemporary art, African-American art, Latino-American art, Asian-American art, and Texas Regionalism. Mrs. Grobmyer has also taught classes on various aspects of the history of art and architecture, most notably on Gulf Coast Vernacular architecture for the Rice University School of Continuing Studies, and the history of early Christian art at St. John the Divine. She has also researched, assembled and administrated collections of Modernism, Abstract Expressionism, 19th century Realism, and Impressionism. Mrs. Grobmyer currently serves on the Modern and Contemporary Acquisitions subcommittee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and is an emeritus board member of Lawndale Art Center. She is a member of ArTTable www.arttable.org, and the Association of Professional Art Advisors www.artadvisors.org. Mrs. Grobmyer is an approved educator for the ASID, IIDA and AIA.

Cecily E. Horton, M.A., I.S.A. Partner Cecily Earhart Horton joined MKG Art Management in 1999, bringing an expertise in both fine and decorative arts. Trained initially at the Inchbold School of Design in London, England, Ms. Horton received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Wellesley College and her Master of Arts degree and Master of Philosophy degree in the History of Art from Yale University. Ms. Horton directed sales of contemporary art at Hiram Butler Gallery and, later, prints and drawings at Moody Gallery, both of Houston. Ms. Horton has been a member of the International Society of Appraisers since 2000, specializing in fine art. Ms. Horton is a past trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2001-07), serving on the Accessions committee. She currently serves on the Davis Museum Advisory Council at

Mrs. Hobby and her partner ultimately sold to Los Angeles based Real TV in 2003. Mrs. Hobby has made a significant impact in the non-profit sector in Houston. She co-chaired the Menil Collections’ twentieth anniversary gala, which raised over two million dollars, and the Glassell School’s VIVID art auction and 25th birthday, which raised a record amount for the event. Mrs. Hobby was instrumental in Houston Habitat for Humanity’s Angel Lane Project in collaboration with Oprah Winfrey which built 65 new homes for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. She also co-chaired Campaign for the Future, the recent $50 million capital campaign for St. John’s School. Throughout her career, Mrs. Hobby has been a collector of modern and contemporary art. Function: NRG is a wholesale energy provider with offices throughout the US. The function of their art is to reflect the idea of “energy” in terms of color, light, and movement. Throughout the space, the art highlights this parameter. Aesthetics: NRG’s LEED Gold certified architecture is full of light punctuated with bright color. Every floor has a color theme. In keeping with the hard architectural lines of the space, the art reflects these parameters and communicates boldness and energy. Site Specificity: The textile by artist Sarah Morris in the lobby seating area requires a strong piece which holds its own without competing with the intensity of the fabric design. The painting by Houston artist William Betts picks up the color of the fabric and adds a sense of energy and movement. Similarly, the first artwork that customers see in the lobby is the constantly changing light piece by New York based Leo Villareale. Villareale’s work interprets energy into an artistic expression of color and light.

In keeping with the hard architectural lines of the space, the art reflects these parameters and communicates boldness and energy. Site Specificity: A gallery space on the first floor features contemporary furniture and a terrazzo floor. The large wall construction on the left, by Berlin artist Dieter Balzer, is 20 feet long and 4 feet tall. It further energizes the seating area, while the print by British artist Daniel Buren on the far right points the way to the stair.

Function: The client on this elegant LEED certified job wanted to bring color that would compliment the veined marbles and deeply stained wood into the otherwise neutral architectural space. The colors and imagery of the six-part commissioned artwork needed to be in keeping with an organic Japanese-inspired aesthetic. Aesthetics: Hand-worked Sapele wood punctuates the North and South Tower lobbies; and marble, limestone and stainless steel run throughout the building. The art and interior design of the building balance the commercial context of competition and commerce, offering a soothing antidote to the pressures of daily business. The aesthetics of the collection focus on blending modern versions of traditional Japanese art forms with Texas art and artists, as well as art that references the automotive industry. Site Specificity: This commissioned work by Seiko Tachibana, a Tokyo born artist living in the U.S., includes layers of sumi ink, charcoal and acrylic on canvas to create the six-part plant inspired piece. Her tightly cropped landscapes bring the natural, organic world into formal spaces creating a mood that is uncluttered and evocative. Tachibana’s respect for the loveliness of detail merges easily with the Asian aspects of the interior architecture.

Function: Gulf States Toyota desired their art collection to reflect parameters important to the company as a whole: particularly Japan, Texas, the automobile industry and their sensitivity to 21st century environmental issues. The collection compliments their newly designed, LEED certified corporate headquarters. Aesthetics: As a first principle, all artwork was to be aesthetically pleasing, complementing the interiors, and highlighting the natural materials used in the architecture. In homage to GST’s forty five year history with Toyota, the art collection includes many Japanese artists. Simultaneously, the art reflects Texas and its artists, including Joe Mancuso, Stephen Mueller, and Jesús Moroles, (illus.). Finally, the art refers to the automotive industry in a formal way in that many of the commissioned works were inspired by automotive components and design.

Site Specificity: GST’s history, place, and industry provided guidelines for our art collecting strategy. Foremost were aesthetic concerns regarding complimenting and reflecting the natural materials of the interior spaces. Tied to this concern with material was a practical sense of appropriateness in an age of sustainability. The importance of environmental responsibility is highlighted by the LEED certification of the building, which in turns reflects Toyota’s ongoing commitment to building ever more fuel efficient vehicles. Sculptures of reclaimed wood, as in Donald Fortescue’s work, and of reclaimed metal, as in Paul Villinski’s butterflies, reflect this parameter. The GST art collection contributes to a beautifully integrated space that reflects the achievements and concerns of Toyota’s businesses.

Function The Woodlands Development Company wanted to enliven the view from one of the most heavily travelled thoroughfares in the subdivision. MKG Art Management was hired to implement the process of artist selection, commission, site preparation, and installation.

Aesthetics Made of native Texas limestone and mirrored glass, the five elements in Otto Regan’s Woodlands Passage punctuate the entry into Grogan’s Mill community. The roughhewn stone lines the forest edge and occupies the naturally landscaped perimeter of the roadway. The mirrored inserts reflect sunlight as well as car lights in the evening creating an interactive effect. Site Specificity Woodlands Passage reflects the stylistic tone of the Grogan’s Mill community which seeks to fit into the landscape as opposed to standing out from it. By selecting native Texas stone and placing the sculpture parallel with the tree line, Otto Regan reflects the surrounding landscape while welcoming commuters to the neighborhood.

Function The Woodlands Development Company hired MKG Art Management to facilitate their public art program which included the maintenance and relocation of several large scale outdoor sculptures.

Aesthetics The project scope was to remove Millennium from a median in Town Center and to install it on “The Outlook” which is adjacent to the south entrance of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The goal was to make the work more accessible to the public. Site Specificity In the course of developing a relocation plan for the Woodlands, MKG Art Management produced several drawings for the committee during the planning phase, one of which is illustrated above. The new site required construction and installation of a concrete pad to accommodate the base for Millennium. MKG managed the sculpture removal, relocation, and site design for the new location. This over all plan included seating, hardscaping, and landscaping as well as electrical needs, because Millenniums structure is fitted internally with bulbs that are active throughout the evening.

Function: For this refined interior, our client desired that the art works seamlessly complement the low key coloration of the space. Aesthetics: The colors within the space are generally in the cool tonal range, utilizing grays, blues, and creams. The fabrics are mohair and silk, and natural skins provide textural interest. Carrara marble, mother of pearl, and blond wood punctuate the space. MKG worked with DLD to select art reflecting their interest in nature and natural forms. In this seating area butterflies in cream, beige and gray line the wall on the right. The large painting on canvas over the mother-of-pearl credenza complements the color and furniture plan in the space. Site Specificity: The furniture layout of this seating area required large scale art which would hang adjacent to each other without completing with one another. By selecting large scale work with a quiet palette and textural application of paint, we were able to highlight the cool interior without diminishing the soothing aesthetic.

Function: For this custom interior, our client desired that the art works seamlessly complement the rich coloration of the space. The client also is interested in art that references the natural world with recognizable imagery. The space is masculine without feeling heavy or cliché, and the art needed to underline this general aesthetic. Aesthetics: The colors within the space are in the warm tonal range, utilizing umber, ebony, beige and cream. The fabrics are suede and wool. Wood and leather paneling, as well as bronze and shagreen accents punctuate the space. MKG worked with Chaswil to select art reflecting their interest in the outdoors and landscape. In this seating area a large-scale rural landscape floats over an ebony and shagreen credenza. At the end of the short hall is a painting on paper of an ibis, which is a bird that populates the gulf coast of Texas. The painting on the right incorporates maps and painted landscapes on a collaged surface. Site Specificity: The lobby and seating area is full of natural light and requires large scale art that does not compete with the rich finishes, but rather compliments the furniture layout. By selecting large scale work that focuses on natural imagery, we were able to complement the masculine aesthetic without becoming overbearing or expected.
