Admissions • e final date make payments, or payment arrangements, for 2013 Fall semesters is September 6, 2013. • 1098-T are sent each year for taxes to the Primary Address please make sure your information is up to day and accurate. • Students must sign a consent form each academic year if they wish information on their account and/or grades to be shared with anyone. Without a signed consent form, SDSM&T will not be able to provide information on how much is owed and due for payment to anyone other than the student. • **e consent form is to release information only. It does not mean billings are sent to those indicated on the form. All billings will be communicated only to the student.** • SDSM&T communicates with a student through their Mines email account, this includes billing information. A student is requested to check their Mines email on a regular basis.

1. Attend fall orientations and information sessions offered to learn more about the school and how the school handles things on and off campus.

2. Are housing needs and arrangements are finalized for either on campus or off campus housing.

3. Has class registration been completed before arriving on campus as well as a finalized schedule printed for the first day of classes.

4. Make sure books are bought or at least ordered before the first day of class.

5. Make payments or payment arrangements ahead of time so you’re not trying to rush to complete paperwork.

6. Familiarize yourself and your student with the academic requirements, policies and procedures.

7. Make sure your student knows the basics of budgeting, cooking, cleaning and laundry.

8. Where finances are concerned, will your student need to be working part time while attending school or will they be eligible for work study programs? Or, are they lucky enough to not have to work during the school year.

9. Help your student become familiar with their new environments.

10. Discuss the importance of health and wellness in all aspects from financial to personal. Stress the importance of utilizing the schools resources.

The list could go on but those are some of the basics to making that first week of school positive.

Preparation starts now

Coming to college for the first time can be a very stressful time for both parents and for students. Summers always seems to go way too fast. We have come up with a few tips to make the college transition easier for everyone involved.

Make sure your student(s) are signed up and informed about for the Mines Advantage. Students will be able to view the core requirements and elective experiences in full detail. Students will also be able to track their progress in Mines Link. Participation at many events, will automatically count for credit in the program. By participating in Mines Advantage, students will receive incentives along the way as well as an area of distinction in the eyes future employers.

How to make a meaningful college experience

The Mines Parents Fund provides support to students in need due to a financial crisis through the Student Emergency Needs Fund.

Occasionally a student faces a financial hardship due to an extenuating personal crisis. Extreme situations and financial crises reported by our students include….

1. Parent passed away unexpectedly out of state—lack of funds to go to the funeral

2. Commuter student’s car broke down—lack of funds for repairs

3. Uninsured student encountered outstanding medical bills due to a major and unexpected illness

4. Home destroyed in fire—no place to live
