INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH THE TOWN OF MARANA

MARANA 2.0 – THE NEXT GENERATION

Our vision for our academies at Marana High School is Discover Your Place and Decide

Your Plan. We have a unique opportunity to help students achieve this through an

internship program we are participating in with the Town of Marana.

Marana High School and the Town of Marana are excited to announce a new

educational partnership – Marana 2.0: The Next Generation – an innovative program

that engages high school students in their local community.

Beginning in the spring 2015 semester, eligible 11th grade students will apply for local

government “jobs” and create projects with real-world magnitude while enrolled in the

MHS internship class. Working with Town staff student projects can include anything

from designing a candidate orientation packet for a Town Council election to creating

overlays and maps for future development within the Technology Services department.

Students will receive a complete list of available projects once accepted to the program.

Town Mentors will assign projects to students and will provide the necessary tools and

information to help students complete those projects. Student projects will progress

over several months and can accommodate flexible working locations including the

school, the town hall, or a students’ home. Town Staff will evaluate completed projects

focusing on written clarity, content relevance, applicability to the department or

position, and the students’ final oral presentation. The MHS internship instructor, Mr.

Alex Ruff, will award the final project grades. Your child will be enrolled in an

internship class and receive an elective credit and a grade for this internship.

The overall goal of this collaborative effort is actively involve young adults in the local

government process. This experience will help students acquire a better

understanding of how their community functions and how local government affects

them daily. It is our hope that this program will provide students exposure to various

career opportunities in both the public and private sector as they continue to explore

their interests.

If your child is interested please have them see Mr. Ruff in B-9 for information. If you

have any questions please contact Mr. Ruff at [email protected].

Graduation Information

BACCALAUREATE CEREMONY - The Baccalaureate Ceremony for seniors will be held

this year on May 17, 2015 at 6:00pm in the MHS Auditorium. Please join us as our seniors

reflect on their past 4 years at Marana and share some of their musical talents, along with

a guest speaker, and a slide show of our seniors. After the ceremony there will be cake.

Seniors should wear their cap, gowns, stoles, and their pins. Parents please send us a baby

picture and a senior picture of your senior to put in the slideshow. You can email them to

[email protected] or students can bring them to Miss Dickey in C-17 where they can be

scanned. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Miss Dickey. We look

forward to celebrating the seniors’ past 4 years here at Marana High School!

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN GRADUATION CEREMONY - Participating

seniors MUST attend all practices, be prompt for all scheduled times and follow the

guidelines outlined in this letter. Every attempt will be made to issue caps and gowns only

to those who appear to meet the graduation requirements. Issuance of a cap and gown

does not guarantee that all requirements have been met and the student is cleared to

graduate. All students must be cleared through the registrar, Mrs. Moore, before they can

participate in the graduation ceremony and/or receive their diploma. Students who have

not completed requirements will NOT be allowed to participate in any rehearsals or

ceremonies of graduation. If you choose not to participate, you MUST inform the

principal’s secretary, Mrs. Rowe, ASAP and pick up your diploma from Mrs. Rowe on or

after Tuesday, May 26th during the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.

PROPER GRADUATE ATTIRE AND BEHAVIOR FOR THE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

All seniors are expected to wear the cap and gown issued to them for the ceremony. We

believe strongly that our commencement ceremony is a formal recognition that should

reflect a measure of decorum appropriate to the occasion. As a result, students will not be

permitted to wear a gown or cap other than the one issued to them. Students are not

permitted to decorate their caps or gowns. In addition, the only sashes/cords at the

commencement ceremony will be the silver cords, gold cords, white NHS sashes, Academy

hoods, and student council officer sashes. In addition, some clubs/athletics have given out

pins for seniors to wear on their hoods. These pins are permitted to be worn in the front

of the hood. Girls may not wear heels. They need to wear flats or wedges due to the turf.

PARKING FOR SENIORS

The options for parking are as follows:

Graduates can be dropped off. Graduates can come with their families and park in the west lot. Graduates attending Grad Night at MHS will receive a special parking pass and they will be able to park in the bus lot behind our Agricultural Science building. This parking will be first come, first serve. I encourage you to car pool. Golden tickets will be handed out to Grad Night participants at graduation rehearsal.

PARKING FOR GUESTS AND HANDICAP INFORMATION

Parking will be very limited. Please consider car- pooling to decrease the number of vehicles in need of spaces.

The entrance to the stadium will be from the west parking lot only. Handicapped parking will be in the west parking lot in the first (North) row in front of the gym. Availability will be on a first come, first served basis. Handicapped parking will be for the vehicles with handicapped plates or tags ONLY.

Handicapped seating will be in front of the stands on the track. Due to limited seating, the disabled person and one family member may sit in the handicapped section. Arrangements must be made in advance in order to have handicap seating. Please email Mrs. Rowe at [email protected] or call her at 616-6431.

GUEST EXPECTATIONS FOR OUR GRADUATION CEREMONY

Please help us in communicating to your family, friends and graduating seniors the

dignity of this ceremony. Beach balls, air horns, silly string, screaming, etc. serve only to

disrupt the ceremony and detract from the accomplishments of the seniors who are

walking across the stage. Everyone who has met graduation requirements and is

receiving a diploma deserves their “moment in the spotlight,” free of rude and

inappropriate behavior from others.

In addition, guests will be invited onto the field after the ceremony to congratulate their

graduates. Due to our new, beautiful turf field the items below are prohibited on the

field.

Any size heels (please wear wedges or flats)

Chewing gum/Beverages/Food of any kind/Sunflower seeds Motorized vehicles Tobacco products/e-cigarettes Any celebratory items such as confetti, poppers, silly string etc.

MARANA ATHLETICS

Tiger Pride News

We are in the spring athletic season with baseball, softball, tennis, track

and men’s volleyball. All programs are entrenched in the 3C’s (Culture,

Commitment, and Competitiveness) at practice, on the field, court, and on

campus.

We are in the final week of the spring season and have a few teams who

are possibly on their way to the play-offs. We have the Men’s Volleyball

team who will have their final game which should clinch their spot in the

play-offs. Men’s Baseball is on their way to state if they win their final

game. These Tigers will be the first in several years to go to the state play-

offs. Once again our Lady Tigers of the Softball field have a possibility of

making it to play-offs. They need to come up with a big win to make their

place final.

COME OUT & SUPPORT all of our TIGERS!!! We always appreciate seeing

our community support.

Proud to be the AD and TIGER PRIDE!

Ms. Montiel Turner
